One of my cousins went to a Catholic high school next to the Nike emplacement just north of Los Angeles International Airport. About 20 years ago I did some work at the former Nike site on top of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The site has been taken over by the city of Rancho Palos Verdes city hall and it happened to contain a USGS first order survey marker that we were using as a reference point for testing satellite land surveying products. We had equipment located in what used to be one of the Army maintenance shops. There are public hiking trails on the land and one of the trails going past the building is named Nike Trail. I imagine most people seeing the trail name nowadays assume it must be named after the shoe company because it’s a walking trail.😅

Mike, What an outstanding presentation. I am a new subscriber. Just wondering if you remember the small company Aircraft Rebuilders in LGB just past the end of Runway 25L? That is where I did my Private pilot. The owner of that company had both A & P and a CFI certificates. After flying in the AF, went to UA. Eventually got to fly the DC-8-71. It actually was my first window seat.

When my Dad served with VMF-451 at MCAS El Toro they were designated an interceptor group with the F-8U2, if I remember correctly. He also flew the FJ-4 (F-86) and F-9F-8.

The NACA was NOT the predecessor to NASA, it was a federal agency devoted to aeronautical research established in the 1920s to improve aircraft performance. It developed for instance the standards for propellers, cowlings and cooling flaps plus better aerodynamics. NASA was created under president Eisenhower to oversee and coordinate developments in space and aeronautics. This was done to stop the unnecessary bickering and competition between the different military branches over what rockets to use. It meant for instance; that the best rocket to use was the Atlas rather then the Redstone for space exploration.

Can you do something like this for the US emergency services. They usually are unencrypted mobile vehicle and portable on oerson hand helds to a central repeater to the dispatch. Hovering around 155mhz and 46mhz. I know there was talk of them going to trunkated signals for years. Havent seen it in my area yet. There is some means of the units identifying themselves since it shows up on a scanner and can be filtered by that.

"downloaded from the airplanes" 😂😂😂😂
@celebratingaviationwithmik97826 күн бұрын
Yes, that was indeed the term used for photo-recon aircraft of that era. Film canisters were uploaded to the cameras before the mission and downloaded from the aircraft for processing and analysis after the mission. Totally different meaning today, however. Thanks for watching!

😅🤣😂😅You said with reference to the 1943 field dark room, "The need for speed " Mobile dark room where they can , and I quote , Develop the photos as soon they were " DOWNLOADED FROM THE AIRPLANES " You meant obtained from the airplanes . Computers were not capable of "downloading from airplanes as of yet. Airplanes of the time had very crude computers generally dedicated to one system. None of them were capable of downloading images.

Not unlike the McDonnel F-15. However, Asymmetric thrust in an engine failure would have been an issue, perhaps more severe than the F-14.

A lot of people don't realize that before ww2 the swastika was a symbol of luck and nature. Then the german socialists got their hands on it. Now it's a symbol of dread. That's how I felt hearing that the name of this plane was rainbow. Unfortunately rainbows are ruined now because they're so associated with child sexualization and pee drinking.

Great video, but might have been worth mentioning that the effectiveness of AA's bare metal aesthetic was slowly reduced by the increased use of composites in airframes, starting with their a300s (tail and engine cowlings)
