No shade, but I just dont know (wondering how much counseling has helped Kanye)... Also, I remember Donny saying that he didn't like the way the meds made him feel. And that's coming from someone who knows what mental torment feels like. Btw, Phyllis Hyman said the same thing (she had bipolar disorder). And they all seem to say that meds blunt their creativity and talents. I wish there were more alternatives but none of them seem to exist at the moment.
@brittany90vt
@brittany90vt 3 жыл бұрын
It's not just in the black community. Many white families glaze over it as well. They either put their kids in long term care so not to deal with it or they try to convince drs to label their children/adult as having bipolar or add since those are more acceptable.

Donny Hathaway has always been one of favorite musicians❤️ It’s a lot better now but people still don’t take mental health and being properly diagnosed/ medicated as serious as they should and often neither does surrounding friends and family members. Its so serious y’all look out for yourself and your loved ones. Its so easy to write someone off as crazy when they really need help don’t ignore the signs...❤️😔😢

On the mental health topic.....my mother was an undiagnosed schizophrenic. She showed all the signs but refused treatment. My childhood was a terror because of it! A friend of mine was also diagnosed with it. His brothers thought I was crazy when I told him I knew what was wrong with him. My friend tried to stab his brothers with a knife and broke the tv in their apartment! After that, they took my words seriously and put him in a mental hospital. He was in and out of the hospital about 3 times. He is out now and well medicated and functioning pretty well.

Hey brother, I'm currently married and separated from my husband who has paranoid schizophrenia, I didn't notice it until three months after marriage during lockdown the pandemic. I put him in institution and get him on medications, he didn't like it and he always packed up and left saying the government is after him. And he was reincarnated. He hate having phones, he talk in the past as if it's the present, he say I'm cheating on him , he hated responsibility and taking care of his hygiene. Yeah its serious, I have a beautiful home but he always went back to the shelter and even there he get into fights.

I have 4 maternal uncle's who were all diagnosed as schizophrenic! It's very difficult to deal with them. They are easily excited and all of my uncle's graduated by the age of 16 but couldn't keep jobs due to them not taking their meds & fearful of "THE MAN" coming to get them! We (our family) continue to take care of them in absence of my grandmother, their mother! They are well into their 70"s and I am the only one who can seemingly calm them down! And I agree his Holiday song "This Christmas " is the Best Holiday song that I Love, you know when you hear his version it is Holiday time.His Music and tone of his voice was so deep that he had the ability to take you with him and feel every word that he sang. Donny was so extremely deep .I wish that we had him in this day and time However we always can reminisce when playing the exceptional music that he left the World. Truly missed. I have a childhood friend that was diagnosed Paranoid Schizophrenic when she was in her early 20's. We started to see signs in her late teens, and she started to become very promiscuous. Once she was on her meds, she was pretty much normal, but off her meds, she had no sense of reality. When she got pregnant, she stopped taking her meds and thought her parent were trying to kill her and she wouldn't go back home. Mental illness is so serious, and we, in the black community, have to realize that like our parents and grandparents, we can do all the praying the world, but God gave these doctors and scientists the brains and ability to create the meds that we need. I believe in pray, but sometimes our prays need a little help. I see a lot of people who live on the streets suffering because they aren't on medication and can't get any help, until it's too late, either they have hurt themselves or someone else. If you see someone showing signs of mental illness, get them help, before it's too late. God Bless and Merry Christmas.

Donny was experiencing feelings of guilt. Growing up in a religious background especially during those days folk were fanatical when it came to Christianity. Satan was the minister of music not the creator of it. Music is the melody of God’s heart, this is why it’s gift is divinely perfect. Guilt will cause one’s emotions to be extremely anxious especially when you feel you let God down. Most people during those days believed the more talented and gifted you were, your soul were souled to the Devil. The gift of music belong to The Creators. Don’t be afraid of the talent God perfected in you for believing in your abilities to be the greatest you can become. It’s the love and passion in your heart that make your gift continue to grow. Be sure to keep the negative energy from the hungry wolves lurking and hanging around seeking to devour the gift God has given you. Rest well brother Donny, your music will always be embraced ❤️🥰💙😘❤️Thank you for passing your vocals to your baby girl Ms Lalah Hathaway who also carries her own tune and speak for herself just as you❤️🎶🗝💙

I remember I was about 11 years old before o knew who Donny Hathaway was I dreamed there was a man sitting in a window he was singing and talking to people outside the window and two people came in and pushed him.. a few months later My mom played “someday we’ll all be free” and I was like mom! That’s the song from my dream and she showed me the album I said that’s the man who was pushed out the window in my dream my mom was like he wasn’t pushed he fell.... how do you know? I said I saw it in my dream. I’ve felt connected to him since then. I had no memory of every hearing his story or his music before then but the song gives me chills til this day.

My older brother is a paranoid schizophrenic. It was very sad watching him struggle with the voices in his head. It was so bad that people would think he was homeless. He wouldn’t come home to bathe or eat. He would eat and drink out of the neighborhood garbage cans because he thought someone was trying to poison him. It was a huge sad struggle for my mom as well.😔

@@Relixstylz Most likely past traumatic events that were so bad that they were buried deeply into the psyche that it would be too mentally overwhelming to acknowledge the trauma. The person may allow it to come to the surface and acknowledge it, especially if they start to receive treatment. Sadly in our community, in many of our families as children , especially, we are forced to keep these events hush hush. For example Whitney Houston revealed, in her adulthood that she was molested by a female relative as a child. There's no telling what traumatic events Phyllis Hyman suffered in her childhood. Her sister said she faced "demons". Flo Ballard was raped at 16. All of them self-medicated via alcohol and/or drug abuse. Flo got help but it was too late. Sorry for the long explanation.

My mother was paranoid schizophrenic. She would hear voices. And she would talk to herself. She was also very paranoid. She always used to say that me and my siblings weren't her children and that we were imposters. That her real children were kidnapped and we had took their place. It was very hard to go through but I was well-educated as a young child by my grandmother who raised us so I understood the condition pretty well.
