Marshall 4x12s, Mesa Boogie 4x12s, Orange 4x12s, Zilla 4x12s, they all have one thing in common.... they kick ass! OK, they are a pain in the ass, heavy and big but they move a lot of air and they feel really good. In this video we look at how two very popular speakers (Celestion's Vintage 30 and M creamback) act in a 4x12 through a few different styles.
As always we talk a load about our experiences, how we love big cabs and how we have used them in the past, so feel free to skip to the playing.

Great video! I’m guessing the V30’s probably pair very nicely with the 75 H Creamback which is close in terms of efficiency. Also sort of random question but just curious, do you guys use hearing protection in front of a wall of speakers like that? If so, any recommendations on good ear plugs?
@JaimeNoro

Really digging the M65 here. Warmer, but still with nice high-mids definition. Seems a little beefier and musical to my ears. But yeah, nothing beats the V30 in a band/live context. One suggestion for you guys - it would be great if you specify when using 8 ohms or 16 ohms speakers. Have you ever compared, say, a 8 ohms V30 with the 16 ohms one? Once again, great video, keep them coming!

Pay attention Jamie, I did mention it in the video ;) ... actually Joe has to edit some of my parts where I waffle on and on so it may have been in one of those section. You are right though, we should state more clearly the impedance. In this case they were 16ohm speakers wired to 16ohms mono. We have found flaws in the 8 vs 16ohm style of videos but we are working on it. I want to involve a couple of amp guys I know and make it as fair a test as possible.

Great video!!! Do you know what causes the sound between the 2 speakers to be more different with the high gain stuff? It's funny in the beginning, to me at least, it was somewhat difficult to hear the differences between the 2 speakers.
@ZillaCabs
@ZillaCabs 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark. It is something that happens with a lot of speakers, the differences are more subtle with clean sounds and will sound more different as the gain levels increase. I assume it is to do with the increased gain adding a layer of complexity to the signal, but you will often notice it in a lot of these type of videos.

I like the mix f both a lot , and it seems through my speakers on KZfaq it is the only difference I hear. When it's one cab or the other I hardly hear no difference really until they became distorted. Still together is where its at for me. V30 alone just don't sound as good as when blended. I have a V30 I mix with a G12H Creamback. Love it!

I have a Zilla 4x12 from 2013 with both speakers in an X-pattern. Do you reckon there would be any benefits to putting the M-65s on top and the V30s in the bottom row (instead of the x-pattern)?
@ZillaCabs
@ZillaCabs 3 жыл бұрын
That's cool... about the same age as these two cabs. You could put the M's in the top, they are slightly quieter than the V30, but an X pattern should give a more even spread in the room. Personally I put them in an X pattern myself in my cabs.

Not sure if you'll ever have the pull of mesa but assuming the newer v30s haven't gone back to older style production, what's the chance zilla gets some custom v30s similar to the mesa ones/the earlier English v30s. I never bought much into it until I heard recent comparisons and everything I hate about a v30 doesn't exist in the mesa/older uk versions.
@ZillaCabs

I think it is more to do with how the cones are made there, and the manufacturer not wanting to make them how they used to (the manufacturer of the cone that is). When we've done testing on V30s the main difference has been the year. I haven't tested a newer Mesa V30. Did the comparison that you heard have a new Mesa V30?

I like the sound of both together the best . The v30 on it's own in this instance sounded a little more forward than I tned to like and the creamback sounded slightly to laid back . For me there was a little too much prescence with the v30 and not quite enough with the creamback but both together put them in the middle of each other in terms of prescence and was just right. Perfect blend brightness prescence warmth and smoothness I was also surprised that the v30 did not seem to overpower the creamback. The creamback came though loud and clear and the sound mix seemed to be equal parts both speakers I use a creamback m65 with a v30 but the v30 is in a 1 by 12 cab and the m65 Is in a open back combo and in this config the v30 is the dominant speaker but not substantially. The creamback still comes through quite well but you definitely hear the v30 a bit more but I think that is largely due to the 1 by 12 being closed back so the sound a tighter and projected more but hear the sound equally loud . I think the fear many have about 100 DB speakers drowning out lower efficiency speakers is largely over blown . It does happen to a certain degree for sure but I think its largely based on the configuration and the eq curve of the speakers

Creambacks are great for taming very bright amps and reduce fizz quite substantially especially amps like the marshall dsl series. The creamback m65 should be the stock speaker in the DSl 40cr but that would put the price up and they are trying to stay in a certain price point . Not such a great speaker choice for a darker amp . I put one in a Traynor YCV 50 and it sounded like ass . Too soft too compressed and muddy and quite dull but have one in a Marshall DSL 40 CR and it sounds amazing in that amp. I will say though the clean tones I was getting from the 50 watt Traynoor and creamback were astounding best clean tones I ever got but I rarely play clean and the overdrive was terrible. The clean channel in the traynor with the bright switch off after I installed the creamback was so amazing. They were the deepest most rich cleans I ever heard but without a hint of mud or dullness . Super fat super rich and super clear . I had a 2017 sg standard and it was a dead ringer for the clean tones page got from the six string side of his double neck on the Earl's court audience tapes particularly the may 18 audience recording with my les Paul that has whole lotta humbuckers I could nail pages clean tones from the song remains the same version of no quarter when he is playing clean chords during the jam section but it would not come anywhere near pages overdriven tones in those performances . With the bright switch engaged the chime and sparkle was just wonderful lots of bite without ever being harsh but my favorite was the bright switch off . Never heard cleans that deep and rich and fat without being boxy muffled or dull and not a hint of being boomy even on the neck pickup . By far the best clean tones I got from that combo was with my 2018 explorer . Best cleans ever heard from humbuckers . It made the burstbuckers 2 and 3 sound like top shelf boutique pickups on the clean tones . It was the only time I ever really wanted to use the bridge pickup for cleans but the burstbucker 2 in the neck was where real action was Best clean neck pickup tones I have heard super fat creamy and deep but yet still quite bright at the same time . Every note and every string sounded huge even the treble strings sounded massive but again with no loss of clarity or artiiculation . Not even the slightest hint or a blanketed tone. The creamback m65 For me hands down is the best clean times from any speaker I have heard but sadly I sold the anp becuase the overdrive was awful . It actually sounded really good when playing single notes with overdrive but once you started playing chords or riffs involving more than 1 string the sound just fell apart and I Tried countless different tube configs but nothing worked and it was hard to let the amp go and mouse those wonderful cleans but I do not play clean enough to have justified keeping an amp just for clean tones n I also tried shit loads of pedals to get my overdrive but that did not work either with the bright switch on the overdrive was too harsh and the lows had this dry powdery gritty sound that I could not dia out and with the bright switch off and the drive was way too mid range heavy and everything had an over the top partially engaged wah exaggerated vowel quality to it which become even more pronounced when you tried to roll the tone off on the guitar . I tried everything but I had to let it go . I bought a DSL 40cr and put a creamback 65 in it and I am completely satisfied with my drive tones especially when I use an extension cab with the internal creamback. Sounda glorious with orange vintage 30 cab and EVH 1 by 12 cab with a g12h30 75 hz hertiage which is a much smoother less fizzy take on the h30 compared to the stock anniversary h30 that was in their. I have no issues with overdrive tones anymore and the clean tones from the DSL 40cr and creamback are still quite great . Certainly not on the level of the traynor but still very enjoyable. Traynor was going for an amp that had fender black face esque clean tones and marshall jcm 800 style overdrive and I think the compromises of trying to be all things at once caused the overdrive channel to suffer then again the overdrive on the Traynor ycv 40 was even worse but the cleans were even better than on the ycv 50 5l

It's as simple as people having different tastes as playing different styles . It's no mystery why some people do not like the v30 and others do . Its preference . I thought both speakers sounded great, but I preferred the Creamback, as you say it's smoother in the top end. Regarding your foggy camera lenses. Is your video room, hot or cold? Presumably there is a temperature difference between the video room and wherever you normally keep your camera? So I'm assuming you take the camera into the video room just before you want to use it? If so, you could try taking the camera into the video room an hour or so before your want to use it. That should help give it time to aclimatise. Then check to see if its foggy before you use it and is it is, then clean it with an anti-fog microfibre cloth. Then it should, hopefully stay fog free for the duration of the shoot. Something like this might help: www.amazon.co.uk/Foogy-Anti-Fog-Microfibre-Cleaning-Cloth/dp/B078ZKCYX6/ref=pd_lpo_194_t_1/260-0774269-3766701?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B078ZKCYX6&pd_rd_r=c1ed68b9-6d61-4573-94f6-416ab543e592&pd_rd_w=5YuWo&pd_rd_wg=oWF4j&pf_rd_p=7b8e3b03-1439-4489-abd4-4a138cf4eca6&pf_rd_r=09GNBS8GN5H39B2J90Y4&psc=1&refRID=09GNBS8GN5H39B2J90Y4

Thanks Patrick. Yeah, it's my fault really. The playing was recorded in the morning, and the room was fairly cool from the night before. It really bugs me how you switch between speakers seemingly at random points during his playing. So sometimes you’ll hear a riff on the V30 and just a single sustained note on the Creamback. Makes it distinction meaningless if the guitar information is different between switches.
