“Extra’s” Tanika Ray caught up with Celine Dion backstage at "Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul.”
Dion reminisced about her epic 1998 performance with Aretha Franklin for "VH1 Divas." The two performed “Natural Woman” with Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan, Carole King and Shania Twain.
Tune in to CBS on Sunday at 9 p.m. to see Celine perform on "Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul."

After that, Aretha and Celine covered each other's songs, and lastly Celine was the one present at the Aretha tribute. They love each other, and outside of that they're both admirable for their talent and accomplishments.

You can see the glowing reverence and overwhelming respect Celine has for Aretha. It flows out of her. Celine is world class. No one who ever shades Celine will stay blessed because God is real and He protects and avenges those with extreme integrity and humility, and Celine is one of those people. ❤️ I have never seen her shade anyone in the industry. She is only supportive and encouraging of other artists, especially other female artists and divas. I believe this is why she is so blessed, has preserved her voice, and is still KILLING it in the industry as a living legend despite the heartbreak she was had to endure. God bless Celine. ❤️

@Mi Amor Help! A celine fan talking about lipsyng? Mariah was always better than both! Better lows, better melisma, more agility! And even today with nodules is still better! Just get them all in prime and we see that mariah managed to sing all the songs from Whitney and celine now I can't say the same thing about both!

I love the way she acts. She cracks me all the times. It was Divas, not Aretha and the others. She was a diva that night, vocally perfect, at the top. No other could have been like Celine that night. Even Mariah was not at the top that night, her voice was deteriorating after 1997 and she was still trying to find her new voice. Whitney was a diva, and she was not there, why? ;)

Why does it always have to be a competition?Aretha Franklin was a unique voice and Celine Dion is also a unique voice. I did not see a competition that night I saw something wonderful. Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Mariah what a unique moment but to be honest I would have liked Whitney to be there that night too.

This is true. It's not that Mariah, who btw does have a slightly bigger range than celine, couldn't "bring it" it's just that she considered that disrespectful. And so did patti labelle who also shaded celine about that but nobody's jumping on Patti. Celine was more like a kid super excited mariah was more in awe. that's very different. And that's ok that their opinions differ.

@@CarloChapelle yeasbut range also includes the low notes as well it's the whole thing and mariah's is slightly bigger. Celine is in the records as 4 1/2 octaves. mariah is in the records including Guinness as having 5.

@@amylapratt8964 True. But that was during Mariah’s prime. During the ‘98 diva concert, at least from what I’m hearing, Mariah’s natural register was much lowered that on her songs that night (especially in Make It Happen) she had to do a lot of melismas around her top notes as she couldn’t quiet hit them in her natural register. So sans her whistle tones that night, her natural register that night could have reached the lowest depths compared to Celine BUT from the mid range and the higher belts, Celine goes much above the range of Mariah. So both their “natural registers” that night are pretty much even. Mariah’s can just extend much lower and Celine can extend much higher. And that’s why Celine was able to wail with Aretha because Mariah couldn’t go up their with her natural register. And her whistle register though impressive doesn’t seem to fit the Gospel genre of Testimony. Again, that’s just my “personal” observation.

@@CarloChapelle if you saw her interview it wasn't that she couldn't she didn't feel like it was appropriate. Like the OP comment initially it's a different kind of respect . I wouldn't go singing runs up against mariah because I would feel completely out of place. Which is how she felt. so she didn't. I understand that it's a respect issue. Patti labelle actually said the same thing. It just depends on what you consider respect might not be the same as everyone else. And those guinness records are much newer than 98. Lol

I love Celine as a singer, her personality, her charm, her sweetness, and how she never looks down on people. If I never liked her that video of her putting a bully in her place made me love her. Anything she says here is just normal industry fake hype to make it seem everyone is cool with each other when they all are competing every fucking time. I'm a LAMB, but I get both sides. One took a step back and let the Star be a Star, and the other stepped up and was just excited and lived in the moment, and just did what she does best. I'm just glad that Celine along with Mariah and Whitney- diva trinity, all came out and peaked on their careers in my time. Boy I was glad the music world are all gifted powerhouses that jampacked every venues and soldout multi-million albums worldwide. Now that they are aged (as I do), their music is timeless already.

Celine did an amazing job. Jennifer Hudson did well too but i wished she had sanged something different her song choices was to predictable. so the audience didnt seem that impressed. Jhud always sings those songs. Aretha's catalong is so huge. Jhud should have chosen different songs. All the artist did super amazing, much better than i expected. Both Patti and Celine seemed like they were holding their voices back so they wouldnt over sing. Still were amazing both got standing Ovations with out asking the audience to stand. world class perfermances.

Celine was the only diva onstage with Aretha who had the instrument and skill and preparation to even dream of going toe-to-toe with Aretha. Mariah loves the spotlight, but also hates the spotlight. Put in a situation to sing a song she hadn’t rehearsed/required to improvise, especially with Aretha, she wouldn’t have felt comfortable. This was also ‘98, a year after Mariah started developing a different singing tone; losing the versatility and effortlessness she had in ‘96. Also, Mariah has a great solo voice, but gets overshadowed with powerful, soulful singers. This was especially evident during duets with Whitney

She didn't rehearse chain of fools and the duet turned out really good! Plus of the three her arethae and celine she was the only one who hadn't done a version of the song before so she wasnt doing a song she had done before the other 2 had. Celine had recorded the song in 1995 It would be like if they were all doing unrehearsed adlibs to hero or make it happen or something mariah would have a clear advantage.

Mariah’s convoluted attempt at rewriting history mostly bec they can’t handle tf that their idol didn’t shine during divas live. The good thing about the controversy is more and more people discover how phenomenal Céline was that night & her epic powerful moment w/ Aretha. And for Mariah. It’s a big STAIN on her career not bec she didn’t rise up & powerfully sing w/ Aretha that night like Céline did, but bec she’s shown her DEEP INSECURITIES over & over again by trying to tear down such a kind diva like Celine & her insecurity is now forever documented in her memoir. Mariah's shades are nothing but an outcome of her jealousy. She failed to shine that night and it was in front of her idol and it hurts and we understand but she need to cut it, its been 22 years u know! Celine tore down the roof that night, along with the Queen Aretha. Y'all dont need to explain, the live is on youtube and y'all can check it.

I don’t guess we watched the same concert. Failed is not a word I would use. Mariah owned the stage in a way the others couldn’t. No one could touch her musicality. It just depends on who you like. This is clearly a biased comment lol. BESIDES, Aretha herself said she would only sing a duet with Mariah. Their backstory that night was cute too. And it may be a cultural thing. Mariah held back out of respect as many black artists would have. I made my point

Its understandable since she's only human and bad days can happen but her attempt on shading Celine for it proves how aweful she is as a person and as a singer. I mean even Aretha enjoyed the moments she had with Celine. There are different ways to respecting a Diva like Aretha, you either accept her invitation to help her lift him, just like Celine did cause you can't say no to Miss Aretha, or u just join the back singers, call it a day and hold grudge for 22 years and even write a memo about XD and yeah we watched the same thing, u just too blind to see.

Idc either way. However, Mariah did great and you are literally the only comment I’ve seen say otherwise. Also.. again. Respect looks different apparently. You must have never watched the countless videos of other people in the business saying the same thing. Or even fans. Also, Mariah wrote a memoir about her life. That was just one small detail in a very long book lol. She wasn’t pressed lol. You sound even more pressed she commented about it. Girl bye! Celine tried (and failed) to outsing Aretha and it came off as disrespectful. Aretha was an elder singer, much older and it was her song and her night. You do as Mariah did, keep a low profile and let the Queen have her night! In her mind, this was probably some great come back and you dont try and outsing a legend.

Miss Céline, don't ever feel bad about using yo' gift. You have a lovely voice and you used it in front of the Queen, Miss Franklin. I don't believe that you were tryna "one her up." I believe that you were just having a good time singin' w/ the Queen. The other "singer" who made a big deal out of it and shaded you was intimidated because you could actually sing live, hit high notes and didn't need to go back and doctor yo' performances. She had an entire performance w/ the Queen, but got salty because you did a few ad-libs and runs. Hell, if I could sing like you, Miss Céline, I would've done the same thing. Who wouldn't? If you would've stood there lookin' crazy then they would've been like _dang, I guess girl friend _*_cain't_*_ sang after all._ Damned if you do, damned if you don't. With the Internet at my fingertips, I'm able to go back and check on my favorites artists and see if they could truly sang or not. Boy, was I in for a surprise...

Céline was the only one who could sing w/ the Queen. Them other heffas couldn't sing. Mariah had a 5 or 7 octave range, but for some odd reason, she couldn't sing. And, she doctored her performances.

I heard that it’s very common for two people to sing together like Aretha and Celine did in the Gospel world. Mariah refused Aretha, but Celine did not… “where two or more are gathered in my (Jesus) name, I (Jesus) am in the mist of them”.

Solo dijo que cantar con Aretha era una experiencia extra corporal porque aprendías algo sobre todo cuando estabas con una leyenda o una reina del “soul music” Además, dijo que detrás del escenario las dos no se hablaban solo se sentían ..... es decir, no era necesario hablar.. solo había que sentir o aprovechar el momento ....

Wow celine has always been so humble... She's a role model... Imagine she's that successful, she's even more successful than Aretha but she's only talking good things about her and putting her to pedestal.. Actually she always does to other people... @@user-oz9cn8vw7d FYI there was no competition on divas live since it is a CONCERT not a SINGING COMPETITION. Aretha called, Céline answered simple as that. But Mariah wasn't at her best there so therefore she didn't have a chance to sing with Aretha on testimony. Don't be delusional and shady
