then what is the actual function of how it works? because you're taking one input, and using it to control a bunch of individual bands, of a second signal, and attributes of the bands are also modulated by further inputs. That exactly is a vocoder. Please tell me the differences

The main difference between a vocoder and a resonator is that a vocoder is transferring the spectral qualities of one signal - the carrier - to another - the modulator - A vocoder tracks the modulator signal using an envelope follower and the modulator is then re-synthesized using the spectral (harmonic/phase/formant) information of the carrier. A resonator on the other hand doesn't re-synthesize the input signal, it simply uses it as an excitation signal for a series of tuned bandpass filters. The 4ms SMR then is basically a series of tuned bandpass/notch filters that can be excited by input signals or an inbuilt white noise generator - the notch filters are the reason why it can be used as a multi-band filter as well as a resonator. TL;DR: Vocoders analyse and transfer spectral content of one signal to another. Resonators use excitation signals to 'ping' a tuned bandpass filter.

QuantikMusic Uh, That's factually incorrect about how vocoders work. in a vocoder a modulator is split into bands using band-pass filters, and an "envelope follower" as you describe is used to track each band, the Carrier signal gets split into bands with even more band-pass filters, The output of which is controlled by the matching "Envelope followers" from the matching modulator bands. That is the mechanism through which it occurs. what you described for the exciter, is simply a vocoder using the same input for both carrier and modulator, that makes use of a "hold" feature. I'm more of a softsynth & vst guy than a hardware guy, that's looking for any reasons to get into hardware, and honestly, I can do almost all of this in vocodex in FL Studio. The only thing I cant' do, is key-track the bandpass filters to adjust their frequency, which this appears to do. that is the only difference I can see.
