MusicWorks - Grade 3
Music has power to help us heal and cope with the loss of loved ones. Using the beloved traditional Scottish ballad “The Parting Glass” combined with an original new melody, here is a beautifully paced and sensitive musical memorial with a Celtic flavor. A key element of this work is the use of Highland bagpipes. If a pipe player is not available, this part is cued in multiple parts throughout the band (or use a synthesizer with bagpipe patch). A moving tribute for any memorial.

A little about this piece: One day last year, our 8th grade band director Brian Galaher's life was taken in a very major car crash. He died very young, and all of his students were both shoked and sorrowed. Our highschool band show was dedicated to Brian, and we never forgot the amazing man he was. The other middle school director contacted Michael Sweeny to get this piece commisioned. There was a two year wait, but after Sweeny heard and researched the story, he immediately started working on it and got it done in time for the middle school band concert, as well as our highschool spring concert. This song was dedicated to him.

Sam Wilson We are playing this song in a concert dedicated to one of our euphonium players, Max Raynor, who ended his own life a month or so ago. It's such a beautiful song, and I even have trouble making it through my trombone part without weeping. I understand the emotion associated with this song, and I am glad it seems to perfectly portray what it is attempting to.

i know i'm a bit behind, but in my school, every sixth band plays celtic air and dance at their first ever concert, and this song at the final concert. i'm in eighth grade this year and didn't get to play it due to the coronavirus. today would've been our final concert, and it breaks my heart knowing we didn't get to say our final goodbyes properly. our memory will live on at the school forever, and that's what counts.

I think you are referring to the looking glass instead of celtic air and dance, although you are right, it is from celtic air and dance the actual song is called the looking glass.

I picture in my head one of those old burials where they shoot a boat with the flaming arrow. 3:13 I picture the arrow leaving the bow as those who are gathered to mourn look on with sadness, and respect, and it just knocks me off my feet with the many beautiful scenes this song can portray.

That's cool, there are multiple parts with Bagpipe cue notes which may be played to help reinforce the Bagpipes (or Hurdy Gurdy). The 3 Clarinets, Bass Clarinet, and Bassoon are imitating the Bagpipe Drones (also in the Piano Part for the Left Hand), and then the Flute, Oboe, 1st Trumpet, 2 Alto Saxophones, and 2 French Horns imitate the Bagpipe Chanter (also in the Piano Part for the Right Hand).

I feel like it sounds better in our band... probably because I play Tuba so all I hear is lower brass XD Edit: Not dissing the other instruments, simply meant that I can't hear how bad the other sections are (we just started this piece, again not dissing other instrument groups)

For subsitutions of the Highland Bagpipes, you will see cued notes throughout the score within many parts. Rather than resting, those instruments will serve as your bagpipe player.

You know how the flute is a C instrument and clarinet is a B-flat instrument. Is the bagpipe an E-flat instrument? Becuase the bagpipe has the same key signature as alto sax and bari sax.

It's more like the Bagpipes don't usually have a key signature. At the key change, when the bagpipes start playing, the Bagpipes don't change key.

Bagpipes never change key, we only have 9 notes lol
@mpemusic4815
@mpemusic4815 4 жыл бұрын
The bagpipes are tuned to an A that is slightly sharper than concert pitch B-flat, annoyingly. The A on a modern bagpipe is tuned to about 475 Hz. The key signature for pipes always remains the same, two sharps, because those are the only two notes on the pipe chanter that are sharp, no matter what key the song is in. So, in this piece, when the pipe music shows a D, it sounds E-flat concert pitch.
