Celtic Source: What does Annwfn mean and how has it's meaning changed?

A quick explanation for why is Annwfn spelled differently at times and what its various meanings may have been through at least 3 periods of Welsh history.

Thank you, Gwilym! Your video is revelatory! I've been struggling to understand the meaning of different dimensions and "paradises" in many traditions. Today I was inclined to study the Buddhist Sukhavati. Religious dimensions have this aim of transcendence and quitting lay life. But ancient Greek tales, along with the journey to Annwn emphasise our empowerment through response to a world demanding our bravery! We have forgotten the ideal of bravery. I see a tendency for people nowadays to appease their mind with drugs and abstaining from life.

Indeed, although I can empathise with folks in hard circumstances taking the easy route sometimes. Life can be hard, and yes requires courage.

Hi Gwaeth ardderchog! Could anafon(as in "afon anafon") possibly be a corruption of annwfn? Diolch yn fawr iawn.

Gwaeth ardderchog? Hmmm . . . Annwfn = Anafon, I doubt it. Annwfn is more commonly "corrupted" (or softened) to Annwn. Anafon could have several derivations, none of which are easy to determine. It could break down to anaf+on or an+afon, either of which doesnt make much sense. Sorry, no easy answers here.
