We learned about the 1904-05 Welsh Revival at the Pentecostal Holiness church I attended from 1985 to 1992. Your mention of it brought back many memories of 4 or 5 families having a picnic on a Sunday afternoon with some of us playing Christian Folk and Bluegrass music. I played Tenor Saxophone, but they always asked me to bring it along, even though its not normally used for those kinds of music. We would play some hand-clapping Gospel music as well. Yes, I believe the original Celtic Christianity came from Egypt. One can't go wrong with Saint Pachomius the Great. My son Adam takes his middle name from Saint Macarius the Great, who influenced John Wesley. My middle name is Anthony. So, it warms my heart that Celtic Christianity has Egyptian Desert Roots. But, I digress. Thanks for the book list. I'm not buying Bible and Prayer books currently. But, some of those other books look like good reads.

From what I understand of it, it seems as though the Christianity of the early monastics of the western lands of Ireland would be something nearly incomprehensible to many of my contemporaries. Places like Skellig Michael are beautiful but represent a life of physical and spiritual labor that has a forbidding aspect. For all that, it is the extreme lengths of their journey that grabs one. At the same time, the practice of private confession, which was an innovation of these men, was looked down upon as being too easy. These early monastics were not lax so much as they were wise. Private confession isn't easy, but public confession might be a temptation that we shouldn't subject one another to. The temptation would be to refrain from confessing those sins that we are embarrassed by. Beyond that, some of our faults are no ones business. Supposedly, the saying was that everyone should have a soul friend: someone who they could confid in both in the ordinary manner and for absolution. That innovation, which was characteristic, became the norm. The other face would be the life of prayer. We know that the psalms were a part of that life. So when we read or recite the psalms we participate with those past lives of the church in the prayer of the church. It is a pleasing thought.
