Celtics Legends Reunite: Kevin McHale and Cedric Maxwell Uncensored.
#Celtics legend, Cedric “Cornbread” Maxwell reunited with the #NBA Hall of Famer he mentored as a rookie. The closeness between Maxwell and 3x champion, Kevin McHale is unmistakable. The two legends chill out for close to 90 minutes and discuss everything from the Celtics - #Sixers battles in the early 80’s to Maxwell infamous exile to the Clippers in late 1985, #LarryBird and Max’s up/down relationships, to McHale’s relationship with the likes of James Harden, Kevin Garnett, Charles Barkley, Chris Webber and his experiences working with NBATV & Turner Sports.
What better way to tip of the oddity of the 2021 NBA All Star break than to sit down and be a “fly on the wall” as these two iconic champs stroll back down memory lane on the Cedric Maxwell Podcast.
0:00 - intro
00:33 - First impressions of the legendary Celtics of the 1980’s, ball busting
01:15 - McHale and Dr. J link up, early-1980’s battles against the 76ers
02:15 - More 1981, McHale’s grateful for his veteran teammates mentoring him
2:50 - The Epic practices & 2-2 games with Robert Parish and Larry Bird - untold gem 💎
03:40 - McHale Impressions and memories of Robert Parish and Cedric Maxwell, Larry Bird - untold gem 💎

These guys truly care about each other and have formed such a strong bond. As a Celtics fan, I remember watching their games in 1980s. I was at a Celtics game in Oakland one year wearing my Celtics jersey when Cornbread walked through the crowd and engaged me in a brief chat. Good memory for me.

I was a hardcore Lakers fan but secretly a Kevin McHale fan also. That said, didn't know he was such a talker. I mean, you ask him a question and go home and come back the following day and he would still be talking. We have a saying in Puerto Rico for guys like him and I quote: " YOU NEED TO SMACK HIM ONCE SO HE COULD TALK AND 400 TIMES SO HE COULD SHUT THE HELL UP". Thanks CORNBREAD for having him. I've been watching your podcast during the past couple of days and along with JAMES WORTHY, this has been one of my favorite interviews. Stay safe brother.

Big, white, Irish guy from Hibbing, Minnesota goes on to be one of the greatest NBA players ever, and a part of one of the greatest teams of all time in the 1986 Celtics! That '86 team was special and destined to win the title. Even had the Lakers made it past the Rockets that year, they would have still come up short. I'd say Celtics in 6! That team was so balanced, healthy, and they had depth with Jerry, Scott, and Bill coming off the bench. Great memories! Thanks!

He was the Finals MVP for the first of the Celtics’ 3 championships in the 1980s (the 1981 one), Bird had the other 2 in 1984 and 1986 but still, C-Max gets overlooked a bit. And C-Max started in the 2nd championship year (1984) over McHale who won the Man of the Year they year, and the next in 1985 even though he took over for C-Max after C-Max got hurt in the 1985 season, and then of course the legendary 1986 Celtics greatest team McHale started. And really after ‘87-‘88, McHale was sort of the main man over Bird since Bird had gotten real hurt.

"Cornbread." One of the all-time greatest nicknames in my opinion! It killed me when the Celtics traded him so he couldn't be part of the '86-'87 champs. As great as Kevin McHale was on the court and I don't have to tell anyone just how could he was because his credentials obviously speak for themselves, he is just as fun to watch and listen to now. He tells some of the greatest stories, too, especially about, as he so affectionately calls him, "Birdy!"

Agreed. Williams has some major talent, but if that dude ever developed a couple low-post moves, he could routinely rack up 15-20 pts, 10+ rebounds, 2-3 blocks. Dunno if McHale is working for another team that would prevent him from working with Celtics' players, but if #32 is available, Brad Stevens should pick up the phone and bring McHale on as a special assistant to work with the bigs (including Tacko Fall!!).

I've really been trying to correct the narrative about the Lakers / Celtics of the 80s and how that was actually Jabbar's team for awhile now, and Kevin comes about the closest I've heard to saying what I've been saying at the 36 minute mark. A lot the B.S. about Magic stems from his Game 6 performance in the 1980 Finals when he filled in for Jabbar and went off for like 40+ and helped LA win that championship. But the thing no one ever mentions is that Game 5 was the big game of that series. It was tied 2-2 and Jabbar carried LA to a win in Game 5. Not only did Kareem have 40 points, 15 points, and 4 blocks, but Philly's two big men, Dawkins and C. Jones, combined to shoot 13 for 34. Magic shot 4 for 13 in that Game 5. For Celtics fans imagine if Larry Bird averaged 33 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 blocks shots in the NBA Finals his team won... and Magic won the MVP. That basically sums up Jabbar in the early 80s. Kareem is the NBA's all time leading scorer who had won MVP, scoring title, and a championship before Magic played a game in the NBA. What is Magic known for? Assists. Imagine someone trying to convince you the best player ever was the point guard for Philly the night Chamberlin scored 100! That's the con of Magic Johnson. Magic wasn't even the best player on his team yet to this day people will look you in the eye and say he's the GOAT. It's ridiculous. I'm not saying he wasn't a special player - he was. But he was also the type of player who would snap his head for a look-away pass after the ball was already by the defender. Meaning it was a lot of show and not much substance (who needs a point guard to be able to hit an 18-foot shot anyway?) Consider the Lakers of that era: When LA faced a team that had a Hall of Fame center - they lost. When the other team didn't have a hall of fame center they won. Do you understand? If a team could somewhat match Jabbar's production at the Center position, LA was an average team. Most teams couldn't match Jabbar, so LA dominated.

I know where Kevin is coming from talking about David Stern (personally I think he made the NBA unwatchable but to each his own) but I think people are wrong about how much Magic had to do with it. Like Kevin says the 1981 Finals was shown in Boston on tape delay. By 1984 the LA-Bos match up was like the biggest thing in sports. But, that was the first time Magic and Larry played each other other than 2 regular season games each season that no one outside LA or Boston really cared about (btw I was at the 1985 reg season game vs LA that the Cs won on a last second pumpkin from McHale!). That audience did just suddenly materialize because David Stern pressed the Bird vs Magic button. It was already there. And it was there mainly because of Larry, not Magic. And yes, part of that is due to the fact America is highly racist. Without a doubt. And that sucks but it's a fact. The NBA's growth during the 80s was because of Bird, and after Larry, Michael took it to the next level. The Magic Johnson stuff is fiction. And you can't understand what Kevin touched on a little - about the NBA's all time leading scorer basically being erased from the 5 NBA titles he won in the 80s in favor of the Magic hype - and not understand that.
