About the film:
Connected follows the seemingly impossible separation of conjoined twins, Pedro and Augusto.
The 5-year-old boys came to Dayton Children’s from Guatemala in July 2021 joined at the top of the head with a 90 degree turn, classified as craniopagus O’Connell class III.
The condition is incredibly rare with an estimated 50 craniopagus twins born every year, with only an estimated 15 of those surviving more than a few months.
The documentary chronicles the two years that surgeons and staff spent preparing and executing the series of separation surgeries for this rare and complex condition.
The documentary was produced and directed by Flyback Productions, a Chicago-based production company.

The mother was really young and I think that she thought once the surgery was done. She was gonna have two average children with no deficits After seeing the the reality that the children have several disabilities. Now she couldn't handle it, she bailed and it's really heart breaking for the children. They had of told her the chance of this happening. She could at least visit them at the child care center But I hope that they find a good family to adopt them And that they do have a good life full of love happiness and good health

What an incredibly complex procedure! I can't fathom the amount of thinking, considerations, consultations, care coordination, etc. Planning it down to scrab colors of grey and blue, signifying the patients team members are responsible for. How many sleepless nights, just thinking if specific method or tool is the best choice. This blows my mind! My hat is off. Absolutely incredible! I LOVE how throughout the documentary the importance of each and every member of the team was acknowledged! Together everyone achieves more! When those few steps were taken during PT ..to see the progress with movement, speech...wow! Thank you to all the providers involved in care of these boys! I wish these boys to continue with their progress, and hope to see some updates in the future.

I hope that the boys at least have some kind of relationship with their mother, and that they continue to have good quality of life. The doctors did intense and incredible work, and I don’t want to diminish their accomplishments. But I’ll admit, it was tough to see the boys level of intellectual function and interactivity before surgery versus after. Much has been lost in the process.

Its may not all be lost permanently. Their bodies & brains were still in shock. We also do not know they level of recovery their vessels & brains can reach. They are still so young & were developmentally delayed bc of being conjoined. Regeneration can take place until 18yrs of age. With good PT &OT, Speech & language skills & time, they could recover more skills.

I was living in Utah at the time Lisa and Elisa Hansen, (who were born conjoined at the head), from the time they were seperated, to now it's amazing how much seperation surgery has progressed. Both girls grew to adulthood but now both have passed away. Personally I feel that this way of doing the surgery bit by bit instead of all at once, is the best way of going about it.

This amazing inspiring accomplishment - highlights the evolved Superior Humanitarians that are amongst us now in this advanced, amazing new science based era - Their dedication, compassion and commitment is beyond awe inspiring. And at the same time we see daily on our screens the in-discriminating degradation, maiming and killing of innocent people by the lesser human beings amongst us - who have not yet evolved from the old barbaric primal responses - who use violence to gain power, dominance over others!! And those who are creating for profit the horrendous killing machines etc that do the killing and horrific maiming - for profit!! We have to wonder how these lesser groups feel when they also view the devastation and human suffering of men , women, and innocent children while sitting in the comfort of their own homes chest thumping and counting their 'financial profits'.

Some cultures don't have the education, money, or resources to take care of their special babies. Often, they're told-by family members-to give them up and often to die. Many, like children who were left physically disabled during Chernobyl were left behind in orphanages. Children who were mentally retarded were also left behind in institution, not just here in the USA, but in Europe too. A German dr. told my parents to leave me behind in such a place as I would never get any better. My parents said "no" as I had Hypothyroidism and an American dr. told my parents to give me thyroid for my Cretinism and took me home to Ga. Despite my ADDHA, I caught up and attended college, then graduated from GSU in 1987 with a BA in Art. Getting a job was harder as too many employers in Ga. have the old "No Disabled Apply. Don't Even Try" attitude as they refuse to believe I even graduated, much less attended, college-but I did volunteer and work before retirement.

I feel this is over simplified. She went through all that for them and raised them until that point, but this is a taxing procedure, and now the boys need care that she literally can not provide the high level of. She made a decision for them to have the best life they could and that's what a true hero does. Sad would be her letting them die, thinking she could do it herself

WOW 😮 It’s amazing what all those Doctors and specialists accomplished! I pray those boys will continue to thrive and develop and that they have a good quality life 🙏 I’m not really understanding why Mom had to give them up? At first I thought she just gave them up to the hospital because she couldn’t care for both at that time but would take them back once all the surgeries were done. But it seems that she gave them up completely and isn’t even involved in their lives at all. I wish I knew the truth about mom. May God bless these two children now and forever with peace love and happiness 🙏

Dad didn’t appear to be around at that point but I saw him in an earlier video. The kids had never left the hospital after birth. They were always shown with nurses taking care of them and even the surgeon says they would have just laid in a hospital bed for the rest of their life. It’s almost impossible for a poor person to care for special needs kids on their own. They only get the care they need if the state takes over. Doesn’t mean that mom is not visiting all she can. She stayed with them until they were over all their major surgeries. She can’t not work and also pay for all the medical care they need. They might need life long care depending on how bad the neurological damage is. They were probably destined to live in that home even if they didn’t have surgery. Now their quality of life will be much better. They can feel happiness, be part of family with lots of other kids, get an education and live their best lives.
