This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into center of mass. It explains how to find the center of mass in typical physics problems. This video contains a few examples of finding the center of mass of a system of masses along the x-direction and along the y-direction. In addition, it explains how to find where to place a massive load on a truck to move the truck's center of mass to the middle of the truck.

in the last problem, it depends on what reference point we are going to pick. We can use the one that our professor, The Organic Chemistry Tutor, used wherein the back of the truck is in the x=10m or we can use the other one wherein the back of the truck is in x=0m and the front of the truck is in the x=10m. In this case, the computation will be 5m= (4,000kg(6m) + 1400kg(x2))/5400kg and if we solve it algebraically, the result will be 2.14m. Why 6m? It is because based on the problem, the truck "has its center of mass 4m behind the front of the truck." If we use the reference point where the front of the truck is in x=10m, then 10m-4m is equal to 6m. Let me know if you also use this one.

In the last problem why did he used the x1 for the truck 4 insted of zero, since the front of the car is located at position zero?
@na-chan163
@na-chan163 5 жыл бұрын
he just arbitrarily assigned the 0 to be the front of the truck, so the cm of truck is at 4m relative to the origin zero. What the answer of 7.86m means is that the center of mass of the object weighing 1400kg must be at 7.86 m relative to the origin. This cm of the individual objects give rise to the needed 5m center of mass of the system.

@tlili3990
@tlili3990 2 жыл бұрын
he took 4 because the x values should be the centres of individual masses and the centre of mass is at 4 meters for the truck. the 10m lenght doesnt need to be in the equation, it just shows that the centre of mass will be somewhere between 0 and 10.
@Ihatelife

@leviticusdionysushunt7080
@leviticusdionysushunt7080 Жыл бұрын
yeah so most of these examples are for particles but there are some problems where the masses have more than one position. once i had a problem where 3 boxes had different lengths/masses (but same height) and i had to find their Xcms from an origin point set at the bottom left corner of the first box. Basically ycm was half the total height cause the 3 boxes all had same height, but for length it was different cause the three boxes had different lengths. box A had length 0.25 m, mass 0.8 kg box B had length 0.35 m, mass 1 kg box C had length 0.2 m, mass 0.6 kg i'm not sure if mass is relevant to your question, but you would use it to find the center of mass of the whole system. however, if we're just looking for center of mass for each box, this is how: I solved it with: X(a)cm = 0.25 m/2 = 0.125m X(b)cm = *0.25* + (0.35 m/2) = 0.425 m X(c)cm = *0.25m + 0.35 m* + (0.2m/2) = 0.7 m if we wanted to find center of mass for the whole 3-box system: xcm = (0.8kg * 0.125m) + (1 kg * 0.425m) + (0.6kg * 0.7 m) DIVIDED BY (0.8 kg + 1 kg + 0.6 kg) then we get the answer, the center of mass of the system is 0.394m. hopefully this answers your question!
