Andy "aTrippyFarmer" Dole is a 6th generation farmer from Central Illinois. On this farm, Andy works alongside his father, Marty, his uncles, Chris and Jeff, and his sister, Katie, to grow corn and soybeans on some of the finest dirt in the world. Andy and his family are deeply rooted in the area, operating a large farm that traces it origins back into the 1800s. Although some tracts did not stand the test of time, Andy and his family still grow corn and soybeans on fields that have been in the family for longer than even the oldest members of the farm have been alive. We do, we have, and we always will take tremendous pride in calling this piece of paradise our home. Andy was a Bronze Tablet graduate of the University of Illinois in the field of Crop Sciences, following the same path as his father and late grandfather.
It would be misleading for Andy to claim that this life is one that came by chance; rather, as a member of two multi-generational farm families, it was simply in his blood. His passion for agriculture traces back to his early youth--some of his fondest, earliest memories being of days spent riding in the combine with his father and grandfather. Although his understanding of the lifestyle was much less complex in the beginning, the love he has for farming, and its industry has only appreciated through time. As this dream blossomed into adulthood, Andy now works relentlessly, and tirelessly, to chase his own dreams and to build a farming operation of his own alongside his family.
We, as a whole operation, are handymen, electricians, mechanics, landscapers, accountants, economists, caretakers, stewards, and, most importantly, farmers, and we take an incredible amount of pride in our work. There is no challenge too overwhelming, no situation too stressful, and no problem too difficult for us to take on, and we want to take you along with us. Welcome to our farm and welcome to our lives. You have the best seat in the house to watch the everyday chaos of farming unfold--we usually only get concerned when things aren't going wrong!

If I remember correctly, from when lived in Rantoul when dad was stationed at the now closed Chanute AFB from Jan 1972- Dec 1974, the farmer behind our home would plant corn from two years and soybeans from 1 year. that is because, as I was told, the corn took nitrogen from the ground and soybeans put nitrogen into the ground. Is this correct, or is it now because of need, and prices?
@aTrippyFarmer
@aTrippyFarmer Жыл бұрын
There is some truth to that statement. However, corn requires an amount of nitrogen that can not be supplemented with a legume crop. It will need a synthetic fertilizer or manure to reach maximum yield potential.

Two questions: 1) How do you gather yield data with different varieties while cutting the field at an angle? 2) Have you considered a fuel tender for your operations to avoid overhead of moving machines to the fueling station? Thanks - always enjoy the content!

Good questions. For the fuel trailer, It would probably make sense to buy a trailer for convenience, but, it may not have a positive economic impact. Most of our farms are within a short distance of one of our fuel tanks. As for the yield data, I should have included a map of the combine monitors. They have access to my planting data from the soybean planter, where It was keeping track of the varieties. With this information, they combines can tell what strip they are harvesting, and this allows them to accurately tabulate yield differences between the two soybeans. It isn't the most reliable data because there is always some error, but many farmers use yield monitor information for simple trials like this. If you wanted a really good test, you would cut strips of the different varieties and weigh the differences. Thanks for watching!
@benjaminyoung2454
@benjaminyoung2454 Жыл бұрын
@@aTrippyFarmer thanks for the reply, and Hi from Australia the land down under. I'm guessing the combine data was good enough for your test plots 😂. Is it also Normal that the combines cut in an opposite direction to the planting.
@MrKkeiser1

How were you able to differentiate the yields on those two bean varieties? Since the planting lines and the combine were at different angles, you almost always had both running in the head at the same time.
@aTrippyFarmer

The combine has the variety maps from the planter. It can tell what it is harvesting based on previous mapping.

Hey mate great vid. Your Subs will skyrocket from here with this professional production. I'm guessing you know you can turn each side of lights on and off. Look it's sad to say but with yield differences like that on same variety seed where I'm from, the blame would be put solely on the planter driver, maybe find out who planted it and hook into them... lol
@aTrippyFarmer
@aTrippyFarmer Жыл бұрын
Haha I'd be hitting myself because I am the one that planted that field! Yes, I am aware that you can fully customize the lights on the tractor. I save a preset with a minimal amount of lighting so I don't blind the combines on approach. Thanks for watching!

@aTrippyFarmer

The narrow-row soybeans feed better into the Drapers at a slight angle. It is pretty common practice around here. People typically cut standard 30” rows parrellel with the planter pass.

Is there a reason why you harvest at a different angle than they were planted at? or does it just look like it on video?
@aTrippyFarmer
@aTrippyFarmer Жыл бұрын
Good question. We do harvest at an angle. We, and many other farmers around the midwest, have determined that narrower rowed soybeans cut and feed better if harvested at an angle. It is not a requirement, but it seems to perform better. If you were growing a wider rowed soybean, like 30" (think of the farmers in Minnesota), you would probably just harvest straight back and forth. Thanks for the comment!

@@aTrippyFarmer Hey thanks for the answer! That is so cool! Im sure that took a ton of data from so many different metrics to find that out. It makes sense though, that it would cut better at an angle just thinking about it in my head. Thanks for clearing that up!

Not a farmer so.... Please help me understand.. If you planted the field with 2 different varieties of beans than why would you harvest on the bias (diagonally) your just mixing the 2 as you harvest and not able to tell the difference in yield I would think ???? I love your videos and my farming background is ... while growing up my parents best friends were cattle farmers with whom they played 5oo EVERY Thursday night, so in the summer I got a little experience with machinery :) and an education on new swear words LOL
@aTrippyFarmer
@aTrippyFarmer Жыл бұрын
If you were getting down to the fine details, this way of harvesting is not the most accurate for yield comparisons. However, the combines do know where the varieties were planted, so they are able to calculate the differences as they go across, regardless of what direction they move! If you were wanting a true test, you'd cut a strip of one and weigh it, and you would do the same for the other. Thanks for the comment!
