Centurion AX Review/Guide, Thinking About Approach Lanes

4 жыл бұрынI review the Centurion AX, a tier 10 British medium tank in World of Tanks (WoT), with replays of Karelia and Redshire battles.
The Centurion AX provides a meaningful increase in DPM relative to the Centurion 7/1, but the turret protection and hull armor don't provide as much protection at-tier. It's a bit of a 1-trick pony.
Strengths and Weaknesses
+ Superb gun depression (-10)
+ Good turret protection
+ Good view range (410)
+ Good silver AP pen (268)
+ Good shell velocity (1478)
+ Able to sidescrape
- Very poor camo (~25 with BIA, Concealment), loses in the vision game to peers
- Hull armor adds weight but isn't worth it

@@taugrim I have had this question for you for a while. Why do you run a green wedge in the third person? For me, this would be really confusing. Here is the reason why I recognize green as being a possible penetration. I figured I would ask. MEND NA

I like the green wedge because it's highly visible, and it makes it easy for me to use it for auto-aim. I never confuse it with the aimpoint, which I use for aiming.

That Karelia game, I feel like the enemy team really played that poorly. Would be interesting to see you do a reverse analysis of that game from their perspective. Thanks for the review. My takeaway is that the CAX is a decent all-arounder, but not really a standout in any way. The bigger problem is Tier X games are just so broken these days. Three arty in almost every game and EBRs most of the time (although not in either of the review games). Tier X, for me, these days is really not enjoyable in most tanks. p.s. glad to see you're not spamming gold in the CAX. That's another issue with most games, but high tiers in particular. The economy allows people to spam gold which mostly makes armor useless.

I agree with your tank about the CAX. It's decent. I find that it can't win in a dominating fashion aside from hull down.

GAVIN L the view range is much more important to a light tank, but if it’s camouflage values aren’t good then even a great view range is pretty much useless for a medium tank it’s the other way around your camouflage values are more important than view range getting spotted sucks big time especially if you can’t spot who’s lit you and if can’t move you might as well be eliminated, although in my opinion both are extremely important a balance of both in a tank will improve your opportunities greatly. Getting out spotted is much more dangerous when you should be able to spot them except their camo-values are better than yours I prefer being unable to spot your adversary when you he/she can’t spot you either hence my love/hate for Russian tanks Lol

View range, once you get to 445m, is not that valuable. What matters is the camo, and that's something which is difficult to boost beyond the obvious solutions (concealment skill, BIA, Vents, camouflage on the tank).

While the Strv was playing unorthodox pushing the T57 in the mid, he wasn't at risk from arty at that point; they were all destroyed ;)

Thanks again, the AX was my first tier 10 some 5 years ago. I’m selling it now to help get another 10. Hope I can do better. It’s a fun tank to play but without an armor or damage upgrade it’s not the best it could be. Needs to be a money maker.

I love your guides. I play heavies and I am a newbie, The wriggle jiggle I find useful. You don't need to move much to put off someone trying to focus your weak-spots or to encourage a bounce

My winrate is nowadays somewhere near 55 % but Centurion AX ... eh ... After 212 games my winrate was 43.40 % :D Talk about cursed tank (average dmg 2180). I could usually tell after 30-60 seconds that we would lose the game :D Either all of our light tanks had suicided, top tiers somehow drowning themselves, team deploying all wrong, etc..

I love the 7/1, and have had enough experience to get the AX, but I've been reticent to do so because it seems like a straight up mediocre tank for as much as it costs. And, as you stated, for the most part, tier X's just aren't really financially feasible to play. We play them for pure entertainment only, such as the STB-1 or the M48. Your video hasn't changed my mind! It seems like a decent tank, but it seems like a downgrade from the 7/1. Thanks again for all of your videos. They have greatly increased my gameplay. I wish I had found your videos back when I first started playing.

The 7/1 is a very comfortable tank to play. It lacks DPM and vision, but the turret is strong and the gun is excellent.

Great video and review about the CAX The CAX for some reason gelled with me when I got it. This was just as it replaced the FV4202 years ago, and without the experience of the Tier X FV4202 to color my opinion, I'd like to think I went into the CAX with fresh eyes as one of my first Tier 10 tanks alongside the STB-1 (which was also a fairly new addition to WoT then) While 53 kph isn't stellar speed compared to most other tier X medium tanks, it does have a good p/w ratio which feels quite responsive and agile. This allows it to reach and maintain speed on most terrain, and thus move around and reposition itself just as well as tanks like the AMX or Leopard. Maybe worth mentioning is its HESH ammo, which under certain circumstances can give it an edge with its 105 mm penetration against softer skinned targets.

A long time ago I remember being circled in my cent ax by a batchat and I was ammo racked 3 times in a row. I fixed the first one instantly, but his second shot racked me again and then his third shot racked me again. I just sat there trying not to drill my keyboard through my monitor. I still don't know if there's more than one ammo rack hit box in the cent or your rack can get "damaged" more than once without exploding, cuz that last shot should've popped my turret off.

modules have hit points, it's possible it takes 3 shots from a bat-chat to destroy the ammo rack on the cent AX

Hey Taugrim, longtime fan, first time commenter... :) You seem to have stopped doing these guides for heavy tanks. The last one I can see is for the Somua back in March of 2018. Is there any particular reason you're not doing heavies anymore? I mean, they're my least favorite (non-arty) class, but I'm trying to be a well rounded tanker, and more guides from you about how to play heavies (especially in cities) would really help me improve.

I thought he just did one with the ST-1 not too long ago? My guess is that as heavies generally have less mobility the skill cap is lower, and thus not optimal for high-level gameplay Taugrim wants to feature.

This is exactly right. Heavies have a much more obvious playstyle, whereas lights and meds are far more nuanced.

I unlocked this during the on track. I am still not sure if I want to move my crew out of the 7/1 or not though after I ace it. It does't seem like much of an upgrade. Aslo Taugrim, I picked up ESO during the steam sale for 7 bucks. At first the combat felt really clunky but now that I have some time in it I highly recommend it. It feels so much nicer than I thought it would after level 15 or so. I don't know if you ever tried it or not but might be worth giving it a whirl.

Just don't move your crew! I have it unlocked almost a year and half ago and still haven't bought it!! The 7/1 does the job same as it and also it gets the occasional, in SEA server, tier 7 games where it's almost like a HT when hulldown!

@@taugrim I felt the exact same way when I tried it on a free weekend. After leveling up a bit ~15 and getting into some delves it felt a lot more smooth. I would say somewhere between guild wars 2 and BDO. Once you get some magica or stamina you no longer have to rely on basic/strong attacks. In the delves and dungeons it really feels like wildstar, lots of dodging and blocking needed.

My first tier 10 was the FV215b bought with bonds... Then my second was the FV215b 183 from black market... Then my third (just got a few days ago :D ) was the 113 after it became a collector's vehicle... ...Does it say something about me if all my tier 10s are non-tech tree? Okay, technically I have the AMX M4 54 and AMX 30B, but I haven't played either. Don't even have the 54 bought yet, while I'm reluctant to move my AMX 30 crew to the 30B.

Oh man u are really missing meta tanks. But that's not a bad thing. As long as u enjoy playing those tanks it's all good. I still love my 215b heavy. Reminds me of good old days when WGL was still alive and when meta was 140, BC, 113, E5 and 215b. CW back then was awesome and maps were great. I really miss those days. But as old saying says: "Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened."

I bet the STB and Patton players from the first battle are the ones that cry the most about arty. It frustrates me how so many teammates just feed the arties.

It would have been incredible frustrating had we lost. I was trying to be careful and I still got hit by arties 3 times. But those other 2 players were being reckless.

DugThatOutMyself the truth is as a avid arty player I love it when players forget I’m there and feed me their HP at the same time I hate players who even when told to hide from the artillery they stay out in the open and get killed either losing your chances of winning or making it incredibly hard to win. I’m the type who if playing any other tank will usually slip into the light tank play style trying to keep as much of my hit points as possible and usually giving up some targets for better opportunities with less danger to me, I think that your teammates probably saw a opportunity and not the dangers of it and just went for it even then they have the option to bugger out but are so committed and tunneling hard they don’t see no option but to die in-vain.

@@samaguirre3283 My favourite enemies when playing arta are the ones who can`t help but peek the moment the are reloaded. I shoot the moment I see them going for another peek and often it arrives just in time to stun them before they shoot. *Grins menacingly*

CAX has 1 more degree of gun depression. M48 aside from the tumor has a stronger turret, better gun handling, slightly faster reload, but even worse camo.

@@taugrim My main curiosity is in the dispersion penalties for the CAX. Compared to other medium lines WG really does penalize the 7/1 and AX considering the gun really is the only admirable part of each tank. I'll certainly take the turret of the 7/1 to the M46, but that's about it in a tier for tier comparison. Even the 430U has better gun handling than the 7/1 or AX and its armour and camo make it better overall. I think the balancing part of the Patton's is their gun handling; I would argue the same principle should be the same of the 7/1 and AX. Thoughts?

The 430U's gun handling is far, far worse than the Centurion AX. But it's armor and camo are much better.

@@taugrim Why i THINK that you love tier 9 tanks more than tier 10. Since I don't have any tank above tier 6 although i do have crazy free exp and credits (200 million credits, I never ever think of playing above tier 6. IDK i hate those abover tier 8 games, even though i know very weakspot. I mostly play tier 10 on common test and i get penned every shot. its so frustrating. I was playing in 430u, even leopard from front was hitting my cupola with gold. wtf man, not a single shell bounced. trash tier 10 games.) On common test as soon as you hit, you get spotted. everyone running vents, optics and rammer. seriously even heavy tanks. OMFG

I play with t67 mostly and p43. i marked them 100%. farm credits at lower tiers. it is so satisfying. whereas if you play tier 10, you will get angry, you feel frustrated, utterly disappointing and then tier 9, 10 economy is pretty bad. play tier 5, 6. you feel happy. you can farm these players. i have played 10k battles in t67. i've almost every skill on this tank. with binocs 450m view range. lol no one spots me. one day on mines, churchill was in front of me 100m, wasn't able to spot me. and i was firing on him behind bushes. he abused me after the game lol. :D kappa

That is my last T10 and I like it good. No turret armor but damn what a bite it takes. Never be alone is the key to do good in it.

With all due respect, I think Vents over Vstabs is a terrible decision. I agree that optics are vital and underrated, but Vstabs provide such a huge advantage on 90% of shots that you take, the slight 2-3% increase in your dpm, view range and mobility is negligible in comparison.

How is the CAX compared to the M48 Patton? The Patton was my first tier 10 and I’m not doing the best in it since it’s so slow and the turret can’t block gold rounds or many standard for that matter

I noticed you were using light tank tactics to save your hit points throughout the session. The Cent AX was the second time WG screwed me over, I had already the Fv2042 and even though it really sucked I played it well the main problem was it was only British tank at the time so losing it for the Cent AX was bad enough but then I realized I had start all over again from the beginning, I never got the premium Fv2042P for free and even though I had tank already I didn’t get anything, no gold, no premium time, not even I’m sorry. The first one was after I bought the E25 I was really enjoying this tank then WG removed the camouflage values on it (on the move camouflage and a much higher camouflage values for its size) making me wanna sell it, the camouflage values have been buffed but it doesn’t even compare to the old tank I loved, yeah I know Wallet Warrior, Premium Player, and all that slog I just miss being able to play the tanks without being at a major disadvantage is all. The Cent-AX is pretty solid but it’s a huge tank and an easy target slow soft and extremely difficult to use right overall I still prefer the old Fv2042 with all it’s disadvantages. As always nice guide and comprehensive comparison keep them coming I’m learning just from how you setup your tanks and placement as well as play style. Thanks

Meds and lights have a lot of common mechanics. The only difference being vision control and a med is far more durable, but yes, the way I approach them is similar in some/many situations.

It's a decent tank, far more competitive than the FV4202 was 6 years ago. That said, I found other tier 10 tech tree meds to be more capable.

The real problem with these Brit meds is the terrible gun handling. If these tanks had good gun handling like the RU meds, then the terrible armor wouldn't be an issue as you could minimize exposure. But the bloom is God awful, and only fully aimed, fully stationary shots will ever land. RU Meds get amazing turrets, legendary gun handling, insane accuracy, and near LT camo values. FFS, give these Brit meds SOMETHING.

I actually found the gun handling on the Centurion AX to be good to the point where I ran Vents over VStab, which I normally don't do.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like your style is to commentate live over the video feed; have you considered writing a script as to what you want to talk about? I don't know if you notice this when you play it back, but there are some really awkward pauses mid-sentence where you're stopping to gather your thoughts. It'll definitely be more work time-wise and editing wise, but I think it's the only real issue with the content of your work, and addressing this would definitely elevate your videos' quality.

Thanks for the feedback. All of the videos in the "Road to Unicum" series are narrated after the fact. I already prepare notes on what I want to cover in the video. The issue is that I'm constrained in terms of time. I could spend 30 mins discussing a 10-min battle.

@@taugrim I'll have to apologize for poor wording on my part; I know that you're narrating after the fact, what I meant to say was more along the lines of delivering unscripted commentary over a pre-recorded video feed. I'm well aware that you could easily talk more about the battles and I'm thankful that you choose to keep the commentary concise to line up more with the battle lengths. I am not asking you to talk more about each battle; what I am asking is that you playback each video, take note of any pauses that you can hear (1:16 ~ 1:23 for example) and what is being talked about, re-record those lines and splice them back into the audio feed. You don't need to be talking the entire length of the video but let the pauses happen between sentences, not mid-sentence, please.

I've done what you're asking in the past, and I'll simply say it significantly increases the time in producing these videos. If I were being paid by a client to produce these, I would do that extra work. But I'm not directly compensated by viewers, so I have to be efficient with my time.

I disagree. Other allies threw away their HP. That's on them. My job is to contribute the length of the battle, which I did in both battles.

@@taugrim you need to break eggs to make omelets, those who throw away their hit points pave the way for those who play over cautiously. I've been in so many battles where there's standoffs for the entire battle, both sides playing over cautiously, until people decide to take some risks and cause the breakthroughs for others. You're still an excellent player buddy, and you seem to take great pride in the game , so well done, keep up the good work
