It works now. Dorman 924-753 Parking Brake Bell... www.amazon.com/dp/B00C0UAAOE?... Chinese hardware does not compare to original hardware but it will get us by for awhile. Go OEM if you want quality and can spend an extra $$$

Excellent video, thank you and your son for taking time to work on it and film. Drum brakes are intimidating to a lot of people, but your approach and showing how they articulate helps a lot!

Excellent video, and AWESOME "220, 221, whatever it takes" reference at the end there! I frequently use that line! I have a 99 Tacoma 3.4 5-Spd 4WD and am about to buy another to clean up and sell. Your videos are very informative and helpful. Keep up the great work!

Great video. Glad to see you're handy and teaching your child. I need to do this to my 4runner, and my daughters don't want to help, but they love to drive it.

Thanks, mine is doing the same thing but not dragging the shoes. Funny my left side looks just like yours did with the floppy cable.

I'm kind of surprised the design of the drum brakes are different from my 97 to your ... 01/02 Im guessing.

Yes they are positioned differently but the same concepts should apply

Was your parking break light on consistently before you did this fix?
@JLeeChron2 жыл бұрын
No. On a Tacoma I have, light would flash occasionally but was fixed by adjusting the cable underneath the drivers side door. On another Tacoma I have, the previous owner removed the switch at the base of the parking brake to alleviate that. I don’t recommend that nonsense.

Did you have a problem with a low brake pedal before the fix? My bell cranks are also seized.
@JLeeChron3 жыл бұрын
No, didn’t notice that
@FD-rh6tr3 жыл бұрын
@@JLeeChron Thanks for the quick reply. My brake pedal almost touches the floor when pressing it (which is a safely issue). The left bell crank bolts completely broke from the back, and the right one is seized. I'm betting the adjustment is super off, so I will tackle this tomorrow.

Tide Pod first thought is master cylinder/seals ..or the rear master cylinders, if leaking brake fluid, (should be visible) would be a place to start.
@FD-rh6tr3 жыл бұрын
@@JLeeChron Master Cylinder was replaced like a year ago, and is not leaking fluid. When the brakes engage when pressing the pedal, it firms up like it should. It's just too much travel. It's definitely the bell cranks.

Is this a joke or are you really able to lock up your rear tires like that driving with the e-brake? This would be miles apart from my enrage performance which is pretty dialed in.

Dayummm - never heard of anyone being able to brake like that with the ebrake. I have brand new pads, drums and everything is adjusted right (or at least I think it is) , and there’s no way I could lock them up like that. Any ideas? What’s the distance of the adjuster stews on your bellcranks? The ones that rest gains the backing plate. FSM says .5 to .8mm when you pull them away. TIA for any tips.

I'm wondering...how many labor hours would it take an experienced mechanic to perform this job? (your estimate) Thanks!
@JLeeChron3 жыл бұрын
Im thinking one could throw it all together to make it work in 1.5 or 2. The thing is, care and attention are missing when done quickly, to meet shop requirements, to make it last as long as possible. (Rust descaling/ lubing/ spraying protectant, any adjustments, etc)

@@JLeeChron quick ? The bolt behind that hits the backing plate how many threads does it have to have before it hits the backing plate?
@JLeeChron3 жыл бұрын
@@edwinthetechnician6578 I don’t know, Halfway it in and go from there. Since its the parking brake, you can also adjust the cable via underneath the drivers side using a 14mm. Spin the wheels without scraping noises, have a second person apply brakes to make sure it all functions. I’m unaware of an official process other than going by feel and checking the final working order.

Nice job fixing the problem. Two points. First it is not an 'emergency brake', it won't do anything for you in an emergency. It is only a park brake. Second, many people yank these on, even on level ground, cause it sounds real cool. Actually it is real stupid. The ratchet becomes worn and the cable becomes stretched and will not hold the truck when you need it on a real hill. Get smart, people.
@A_guy8404 жыл бұрын
BS. If you have a brake line blow out on you this is the only thing that's going to stop you. It's definitely there for an emergency. Also pulling it up activates the automatic adjusters for the rear drums.
