Make sure to adjust the small screw on the back also for max e-brake efficiency.

Do you know the size of the adjustment screw? Mine broke off and I do not want to buy a new bell crank kit.

@@JT-sk5nw It's either a 5 or 6mm diameter thread. But for sure the hex head is 10mm.

Anyone know the correct position of the screw? Should it be touching when e brake is set?

I left it with maybe 1/8" of clearance, works fine. But no I didn't find an official answer. I believe that screw acts as a stop of sorts, like a bump stop.

15:45 “not too many people are working on 4Runners.” Since that time, these have had a cult following, so you were on the cutting edge! I don’t use my ebrake much in the winter, but with a manual tranny, kind of hard not to at times. I was on a slight incline and needed to jump out real quick, and in that short amount of time that I engaged the brake, it apparently froze. I forced it in reverse and heard a loud bang/pop. Don’t know what happened, but I started looking for videos for my possible repair. This is the first one that came up in my search history, so thank you for this! Very helpful!

Excellent video tutorial. The most comprehensive one I've seen yet on this parking brake replacement. The hardest part was getting the retaining pin out of the harness that holds the brake line to the bell arm. Mine were rusted completely solid on both sides. It took some major hammering with a punch to get those suckers out. I probably spent 20 minutes on that step alone. Almost as hard is getting those little plastic washers under the pivot housing. I only managed to get one in per side. I have no idea how you got them both in. That was black magic. I just keep bunching up the washer and gave up after about 10 minutes of fighting it.

This explanation works for my 1994 Toyota Pickup as well. The bell crank is mounted vertically instead of horizontal on the 4Runner. Great explanation of the assembly

Good tutorial! Thanks for taking the time. I've been thinking of replacing the shoes and drums while in these drums but it looks like if they are in good shape, i can do this without taking the entire drum and hardware apart. I might have the dust shield issue, so your video will help me determine the best route to no. Thanks again!😎🤞👍

I've had the parts for months and I've been putting off this job in dread, as I've never touched drum brakes before. Thanks for showing me how to get it done, it really doesn't look bad at all! Though of course, it's now January in MA, and getting cold. It will be nice to get a current inspection sticker... LOL

13:24---- dont forget to crimp the horseshoe clip around the pin. The ends should touch. I also use a generous amount of grease on the linkage and pin where the parking brake cable connects to the bellcrank arm. Rust and corrosion is common on these parts on Toyotas. Good angles and close ups of the R&R.

Hi! I have a 2000 4Runner, so you might be able to help. On the actual cable itself, is the equalizer assembly (part #46341-35030) supposed to be loose when it attaches to the frame or snug/tight? My old one was tight, but I don't know if that was intentional or rusted in place because I now have a gap with the new assembly. Thank you!

how do you make adjustments to the bolt and locking nut on the bell crank? If the bolt is closer to the backing plate what happens? if the bolt is further away, what happens? do you have to adjust the same way on both passenger and driver side?

Removing the pin to release the old bell crank from the cable can be quite a problem if rusted. I had to resort to the angle grinder, which is very awkward on this cable.

Good video - BUT!!!!!!!! If you are using the Dorman replacement bell crank parts DO NOT TORQUE TO 25 ft lbs! In fact don’t even think about it or the damn things will strip. I did the first one with my torque wrench set at 25 ft lbs and I bet I didn’t get to 15 before the threads in the aluminum housing piece let loose. Another source that I found called for 115 INCH POUNDS. (Just under 10 ft lbs.). I’m hoping that the opposite side piece will work and all I have to do is try to get those freaking bushings in place again!
