How To Stop Dog Barking
In this Cesar911 Episode, Cesar helps a family whose dog barks at everything!
The mom's son, Mason, is scared to even enter the house because the dog makes him feel uncomfortable. He is afraid that the dog, Buddy, will lash out.
This video focuses on when to give affection at the right time and to make sure you are not rewarding the wrong behavior!

I have to laugh. Look at his grey hair! Now I’m quite sure he is younger than I, but yeah he’s a good man. His sons work for him so they learn a trade and can support themselves. Cesar looks at a dog’s world and their point of view, and figuring out what needs to be done. PS, it’s always the owner’s fault! LoL. My dog barks too much if someone gets off the elevator, a package delivery etc. So I talk to her in full sentences, she seems to understand. “Nope, I told you, you get ONE BARK and after that, I will nag on you as only a woman can!” She gets too carried away but not nearly so much as she once did. My son brought his worst barking dog to me for three weeks. First day she went half on, half off the puppy pad. We walked past the pad, I stopped and said, in a chilling voice, “I think you can do better than that.” I raised that one from a pup then he took over, so she knew me well (she watched TV with me, loves FaceTime with her). Not one more “half on, half off” episodes. She learned not to bark, in a short period of time. But she’s back home and barks the most, again. It’s pack mentality. If I come to visit, I call when I get in the driveway so he can let them out to the back yard, so the barking won’t wake the sleeping baby. Not sure how to cure that problem but it’s their problem, not mine.

It's almost like the dog feels the need to be the pack leader but only because it has to and in a normal pack would be the least likely candidate to be leader due to its personality. It might be while its fearful, because being a pack leader is the last thing it wants to do, even more so than other individual dogs. Basically feeling forced to do something it doesn't want to do at all where other dogs may just make it work.

Firstly, well done and keep doing what you're doing. Secondly, there are many reasons why a dog barks, but 9 times out of 10 it's because they're territorial / protective (or just scared) - This is why leadership is so essential. When you establish leadership, she will no longer feel the need to be protective or scared. Why? Because she 100% trusts you to take control of any given situation. It's like you're taking that job off her if that makes sense. G,oogIe the phrase - RecaII 123 BIog

@@perssontm1628 It depends on what you consider a "result". You can intimidate a dog into submission, sure... or you can train a dog with kindness to adopt a certain behaviour because it knows good things will come its way until the behaviour becomes second nature, rather than adopting a behaviour because it's afraid of the consequences. Dogs NEED an alpha, they need someone to be in charge. @@perssontm1628 There are many videos in which he physically harms dogs. In this particular video the harm is mainly psychological. He acknowledges that the dog's behaviour is due to fear. Instead of creating conditions in which the dog understands there is nothing to fear he admonishes the dog for expressing it's fear by prodding, poking, shhting and depriving him of access to a space where he feels safe by yanking him off the sofa when the boy enters, without the dog actually having done anything wrong at that point. He instructs the dog's owner to withdraw affection and reassurance. Instead of helping the dog to understand that when the boy enters the room good things happen, he signals to the fearful dog that he's right to fear the boy's presence as the boy's very presence means that bad things will happen to the dog. It's psychologically damaging and doomed to fail. Your understanding of dogs and alphas is flawed. Dogs in the wild actually live cooperatively. I'd be interested to know where you got that information from. Milan, right?

I notice that some of the lonelier people(like myself) actually enjoy calming them down & babying them. Not just for the dog, but for themselves. They want to feel needed. I still do it to this day, so me knowing that I have that habit isn't enough, I still act it out when I know I shouldn't. But I'm trying to change, like this lady is.

@@J_Willis58 did you end up getting any help? I did. They teach ME, instead of my doggo, a "Teach a man to fish" type deal, thankfully. It's working out exactly as I was told it would👍 By the way, I have a tiny, 7 lb Miniature Yorkie, just like Denise's doggo ;) ...Anyways, I've taught her almost every trick I've taught all my dogs in the past, but I never thought the "Leave it" trick would be the key to proper communication between us & our dogs.. ..If you need help yourself, my trainer says that "Leave it" command is what matters most to start. It'll turn into something I can use to snap her out of her barking fits, by communicating to her that I've noticed what she's showing me, & that I've decided it's not a threat. It's a long ways away, but it's helpful to know there's a clear path to the goal.. That goal: To get her to STOP THE SCREAM-BARKING!🙉

@@sachinisg it’s not that simple if you don’t also solve the dogs issues and correct them. That won’t stop them from barking at every little thing, it only stops them from doing so in the house if they’re not in the house to bark. At the end of the day, a dog is still a dog, but I have a hard time trying to picture this woman just ditching her dog for a outside dog house especially since she feels so close to him. That dog, even though he’s not properly trained is probably treated a lot better than most people who get a dog and ditch them as they get older for the back yard on a chain. Her emotional attachment to him shows she’s not that kind of pet owner. She definitely needs to work more with the dog to get him to behave better. Doing so is just hard, I’m sure, in her type of situation where she’s to attached to him to fill that emotional void from losing her husband. She seems like a very sweet and lovely woman, however, it takes more than just feeding, grooming and caring for a dog to have them be ‘good’. Most people don’t understand how complex ’pets’ are and how each individual animal has their own way of being on how to care for them in a way that we can understand how their brains work. It’s a bit more than ‘I want a dog to make me feel better’ type of thing and even then more than likely the dog is there to fulfill the humans needs over the animals and I mean no disrespect when I say this, but most people don’t realize that this is a bit on the selfish level. Humans, as intelligent as they are, don’t always get it right even as well intentioned as they may be. Back to my original point, while dogs may be animals, but banishing them to the back yard is not the answer and won’t solve this issue even if you have a really cool set up. So, no, it’s not as “simple” as you may think. Also, what’s the point of having a dog if you just keep them outside all the time especially if you’re going to be ‘lazy’ and not train them? To do so is very irresponsible as a pet ‘owner’ and doesn’t make up for not doing right by your dog thinking you are able to ‘simply’ get off the hook in the much needed training department.

I take a lot of life lessons not just about dogs but how to be in the moment from Cesar too. Like not copying unbalanced energy, not taking things personally, just being calm assertive. ^-^ I think the small practices and exercises build the confidence and mindset for it too.

@@DogOnAKeyboard wrote: "how to be in the moment." I totally agree. I think most people hear "energy" and "in the moment" & think "yeah, yeah, naval-gazing blah blah." "I'm in the moment {selfie!}" I wish Cesar would do a show about "mindfulness." How to recognize our "self-talk" (the inner narrative, "the story we tell ourselves") and experience a moment of silence (the moment without our story). Most people don't realize how "not there" they are. If you're looking for inspiration: the first thing that helped me to see this was a couple "guided mindfulness" videos ("Guided Mindfulness on the Present Moment. Be here now." & "Guided Meditation for Beginners - A New Perspective on Mindfulness." Both are channel: MindfulPeace.). And then, after I had personal experience with that, Eckhart Tolle made a lot of sense to me. But, if I'd seen him first, I wouldn't have understood anything. It would have sounded like naval-gazing "whatever." It was the guided mindfulness that caused me to see it. I think Cesar's talk about being in the moment is entirely about that.

Like the cool kid in the video, reading the dogs behavior, trust your instinkt - that is what dogs do :-) And remember, there are never bad dogs, only bad owners. Too many people shouldent have pets (or children), i hope one day you have to get a license to own one. I hope you will meet and enjoy dogs, with good owners in the future :-)

@@oliviahafner561 they weren’t “unlucky”. The vast majority of dogs are NOT trained at all and their owners reward their terrible behavior or even teach them bad behavior like “play” biting. It baffles me that people are even still allowed to adopt dogs in 15 minutes without any kind of knowledge despite them being able to rip people’s throat out.

That is why people need to know the responsibility of owning a dog. When they find out they can't handle or don't want to give the care a dog needs the poor dependent fur baby ends up unfairly suffering miserably with neglect.

I have 3 pommies that bark at everything. When one barks they all join in. I have had them for 10 years now. Is it too late to fix this problem? What can I do?
@getmoney1st312

Do they know the word no? A lot of these small breeds have no boundaries. They’re in “your” bed, couch, lap etc. They see themselves as equal in the pack. You have to set boundaries. It’s normal for them to bark when they hear car doors slam or commotion outside. It’s the non stop barking that’s the problem. Start by saying no in a firm, loud voice so they know you mean it, maybe block off the triggered area. But start with the main one who starts barking and work your way down. Like ENOUGH MILO !! ENOUGH LULU !! ENOUGH FOXY !! Show your displeased for 15 mins.

@D M Not true. And I never said to use the word no, I like to use OUT. But no is fine. You’re saying any attention is good attention to a dog, we all know that’s not true. A dog has to be taught commands. Just like sit.

I'm not a dog expert, but it seems to me Ceaser is saying that both Grandma and her dog were fearful when a visitor came to her house, though for different reasons. They were both sensing thst fear in the other and effectively reinforcing that fear in each other. Sensing fear, grandma treated the dog like she would a child by trying to give comfort to the dog, which in reality was reinforcing the fear rather than calming the fear. Until grandma could feel calm, the dog couldn't feed off her calm energy. Grandma didn't understand she was reinforcing bad behavior by her response to the dog's bad behavior. As Ceasar said, it is more about training the human. Grandma was reacting to the dog's fear, not its bad behavior. Until she could react first to the dog's bad behavior she couldn't help the dog with its fears. The dog needs to feed on the owner's calm energy rather than the owner's fearful energy. By not showing the dog that she, grandma, was mastering the situation, the dog took the lead and acted aggressively which is how a dog will try and master the situation, which in turn unfortunately in this situation heightened grandma's fears and everything then spiralled down from there. Putting a leash on the dog was the start of telling the dog it was not the pack leader. Reminding the dog through a touch, or verbal command that you, grandma here, are the leader reinforced follower behavior in the dog, which was in effect telling the dog to be calm which would work only as far as the new pack leader, grandma, was asserting calmness. The lesson of the leash was lost as soon as grandma showed the dog she was not the master of the situation, ie the pack leader, and the fearful dog tried to take back control through aggressive behavior despite the leash. A fascinating lesson by Ceaser. While teaching grandma and the dog new behaviors is the start of the solution for the grandson, teaching the grandson new responses was, unfortunately not revealed in this all but too short of a video. After all, I would love to know how does one teach a ten-year-old not to feel afraid around an aggressive dog? How does one teach a ten-year-old to be a calm assertive pack leader? It would seem to be unnatural for this ten-year-old who, though perceptive, is not confident by nature.
