This is probably the most detailed review of a Cessna 177B Cardinal airplane you can find.
This Cessna Cardinal is for sale, link to the details:
www.aerolifeaviation.com/Item...
Please contact us if you are interested in the plane.
Cessna Cardinal 177B fixed gear was my first airplane and it has a special place in my life. We liked our Cardinal so much that in the first year alone we flew over 150 hours.

I just don't understand what happened. Big tail. Cantilevered wing flowing perfectly into that steeply raked front glass. Absolutely gorgeous, more contemporary 2020-23 European design and timeless curves. Loved this video, those lakes are unbelievable. Beautiful place.

I love how detailed your reviews are. I sometimes have a question about a certain aircraft and look for hours just to get my answer. I perfect example is the cargo area, most people give a few seconds to look and tell you that is rated for 120 lbs.

Thank you for your comment. Years ago when we were looking to buy our first plane, we wished we had detailed reviews to understand everything about a plane. Couldn't find them. That is one of the reasons we decided to make these detailed aircraft videos. In the baggage area, I included the amount of stuff that would fit (so anyone can get a better idea). Comments like yours are an encouragement for us to do better. thanks again.

Nice review. I’ve owned my 177B for 8 years and love it. I also have a Powerflow exhaust and several other speed mods. On a good day, I see 155 MPH/135 KTS true airspeed on about 9.5 GPH. There are not many fixed gear airplanes out there with two big doors and 4 comfy seats with those operating economics. Oh, and the handling is superb. The Cardinal controls are responsive (which is part of the reason it never succeeded as a trainer like the 172), which make the airplane a delight to fly with the proper training and technique.

Ah, the beautiful Cardinal! I loved flying the 180 hp version. I expected it to replace the Skyhawk in production. Better visibility, no struts, huge doors, and the stabilator, was, and is, a vast improvement over the Skyhawk. If our club had the Cardinal when I did my 3,200 NM cross country, I would have chosen it, over the Archer, instead.

The wing airfoil defines the plane, same as a Lear 25. The airfoil is fast but quickly gains drag as the angle of attack increases, which accounts for the bent firewalls, in 1970 they went to a 172 airfoil, stopped the landing accidents.
@aerolife1646

Earlier models had a different cantilever wing and they changed as you mentioned. I can't comment on the firewall damages because of the wing design as I haven't heard that before.

Thanks for the thorough review. This looks like a plane that's had owners who cared for it very well. The panel upgrades are what I would want except for adding a G5 or equivalent, getting rid of the vacuum system and its weight, and possibly adding an autopilot. Although, as you pointed out, it's a pretty stable platform plus there's already been a lot spent on meaningful panel upgrades. I want it, but I don't think I can get my family treasurer to vote for letting me pull the trigger (She has two or three votes to my one!). I've read and heard how easy it can be to land "nose low". Do you typically dial in a little more "up" trim with the forward CG before landing when lightly loaded? Thanks again!
@aerolife1646
@aerolife1646 4 жыл бұрын
Fuel and 2 in the front, it is good to use up trim in the final. in general any plane it is good to use some trim in the approach. The only thing though is if you have to go around you might need to push the yoke to compensate the up trim when you apply full power.

I was in flight training in 1982 and had accumulated only six hours when I had to step away due to an unexpected financial drain. I haven't had any GA contact throughout the years. I'm going to begin training again. Your video here was a wonderful tutorial for me, as I wanted to learn more about the Cardinal models and you certainly delivered. You are very, very knowledgeable and the information you gave was wonderfully clear and concise. Thank you for that! I have some questions if you have time for me and wouldn't mind. My trainer(s) at the time were two brand new 1982 152-II's. Being high wing aircraft, whenever I looked out of a side window I always had the fear of falling, or maybe I should say, I'd get a case of the creeps of falling. (1) Do people like me get over that? (2) Or, Is it a case that certain people are better suited to low-wing aircraft? I found your expressed love and extensive use of this particular aircraft to be a fine testimonial. I don't understand why you wish to part with it. Looking outside of common financial hardship or poor health, (3) Can you tell me what happens to people that results in making the decision to sell a beloved aircraft?
@aerolife1646
@aerolife1646 4 жыл бұрын
Appreciate your comment. Glad we are able to help. That is our main goal to make these videos. 1 & 2. When you fly more hours, the fear will gradually fade away. More spacious airplane has less of this feeling. You may be more comfortable with the low wing airplane. It is too early to say, more hours help to overcome most negative feelings would help. 177 was my first plane, I really like them. This plane is owned by the dealership and it is for sale. 3. People do that all the time. Some people need to upgrade/downgrade and buy a different airplane.

@aerolife1646
@aerolife1646 3 жыл бұрын
This airplane has the 180hp O-360. The IO-360 is found in the Cardinal RG. I can check with our mechanic about the upgrade options. If you need a higher power, faster airplane it is usually better to buy one with higher performance because those airframes are designed for that extra power and performance.
@quinnjim
@quinnjim 4 жыл бұрын
Very detailed review. This is a nice airplane, but in that price range I can get a 182 (which is a much better plane all around). That's the problem with putting so much money in the panel, you don't get it all back when you sell. At 28:01 your graphic mentions that it will do LVP approaches when I think you meant LPV. At 30:30 you mentioned the "push pull fuses" again. There are no fuses in that panel. Those are call "circuit breakers". You are very knowledgeable and clearly have a lot of expertise. The only phrase you need to learn is "circuit breaker" and you'll be darn near PERFECT! I am starting to look at the 177 and 177RG as a possible next airplane. Looking forward to your next video!
@aerolife1646
@aerolife1646 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the typo, I appreciate you mentioning it. Yes, it should be LPV. Also I'll remember the "circuit breaker" next time. 182 is a great plane. 1975 182 with these upgrades you are looking at a much higher price than this. 182 can't do a whole lot more than 177.(210 can) 182 has a higher payload, is a bit faster but with more fuel burn. Cardinal has its own place in the Cessna family. Thank you for the comment.

Nice plane but one thing stood out a mile to me - no autopilot. To be a true cross-country machine this really needs an autopilot. I could fly from Addison Texas to Phoenix in this no problem, but without even a basic or legacy autopilot that mission becomes 10x more exhausting. Odd that the panel was upgraded to such a standard but that no AP was considered. The fantastic Garmin GFC500 autopilot and one G5 display costs under $10k and would perhaps have been a better choice than the Aspen.
@aerolife1646
@aerolife1646 4 жыл бұрын
It would be nice to have an autopilot in any plane especially if you fly very long trips/hard IFR /single-pilot often. Average GA pilots fly around 50 hours a year. It is better to hand fly that small time to stay proficient. I love to handfly a plane. We fly a lot and hardly use autopilot to stay proficient. Since it has PFD you can always add an autopilot for less. Yes G5 and GFC500 are a great setup.

Cessna doesn't make new 177. They stopped production in 1978. You can buy a new 172 probably around $400,000 and up depending on features.

@2:45 does anybody really think the 172 is a better plane than the 177? Maybe based on prevalence in the market and thus relative cheapness, but by any other metric?! The problem with the 177 is that you're not buying a plane, you're adopting a minor historical treasure, and keeping it alive gets more and more expensive every year. I wish Cessna had built 20,000 of them, but alas, it was not meant to be.

As an A&P IA for over 20yrs I worked on and flew several Cardinals. Great plane, good value but two things stick out to me. 1. Don't waste your time with the 150hp model it's doggy especially in short field performance the 180hp model is much better and the way to go and if there was a 200hp STC conversion I'd highly recommend it. 2. The plane requires you to be in front of it at all times on approach with airspeed and approach angle getting your full attention.Cardinals have a very nasty habit of floating and porpoising and if not corrected with power and a go-around can lead to nose gear damage or failure I've repaired and replaced a few over the years because of this. The other trouble spot is the cabin doors they're too big poorly designed and the hinges and attachments need careful inspection and care or be prepared for a stiff repair bill.

Thank you for your detailed comment and for sharing your experience. I agree 180HP 177B is a better plane. In the video, I explained the door and how there is a simple improvement for it. Or just be a little careful. Most high wing Cessna's don't float, what with the airframe drag and very effective flaps for slow approach. (Mooneys do, it's not the plane, it's the pilot's incorrect technique) In fact, I have flown Cardinals ever since I had only a few hours as a pilot and never had to go around. Last week I landed in 37 knot gusting winds on a short runway perfectly. As a pilot, I like to think if I can't fly or land properly, it is my problem. Not the plane. If we as pilots think it is a problem of the plane, we never learn. Every plane is different. They need to fly the way they were designed to fly. Use the techniques for that particular plane.

@@dvsmotions I think 177A is an overlooked airplane. That's why I was only referring to 177B is a better plane. Which it is. That doesn't mean 177A is a bad plane. If stabilator has been upgraded (it should) and if you don't carry a lot of weight, with its more effective wings, 177A could be a good plane. Can you tell us more about your experience flying 177A?

I'm no pilot, but the entire GA Industry, makes less sense to me, than Biden re-elected to a 3rd term. 50-year-old airplane. Looks more modern than a brand new Cessna 172. Lady says it's a better plane, in every way. Cost $27,000 new in 1972. Cheapest one used listed @ $114,000 today. So ...... lets quit production after 4,000 that are sure to appreciate 5 - fold. And keep making 45,000 172s. Charge $400,000 for them. Certain to depreciate nearly 100%. Could someone please explain to me, this sick business mentality? It's Koo Koo Clocks. Every hour, on the hour. It makes this annoying sound. Then 2 assholes come out from each side of the house. Face each other. Beat each other over the head with mallets. Then turn around and go back inside. *WHAT KIND OF PHUQED-UP SICK MENTALITY IS THAT?*

Initially the 177 was my favorite plane but after digging into its design many times over the years, I have just become very disappointed in the engineers giving up on making this plane what it should have been to begin with. There was mention of the engineers deciding to bring the wings rearward and create the more aerodynamic design, making a nose heavy situation while failing to extend the tail so the elevators delivered enough control. So a cheaper fix was to make it have a stabilator, which created its own issues. And the 177 coming out with low power like its a 172. In my opinion there shouldn't be anything less than 180hp even in the 172. Overall it seemed to be not very well thought out, and almost like they were just trying to skim by and make something better with already existing parts and pieces just by adding to, taking away or repositioning.
