For those unfamiliar, WWI was marked as the abrupt end of romanticized warfare. The utilization of mechanized weapons turned the magnificent rifle march into a meat grinder. Young men expecting to be Napoleon were mowed down with more bullets in a 10 second span than had previously been used in total for entire battles just a generation earlier... War was a brand new nightmare at that time

I have been following " the great war" channel for the past year and have learned ten times more about WWI than all my school years combined . One thing that really stands out is the breakdown of " heroic" moments in war, in fact, that was one of the reasons that generals were "reluctant" to let soldiers have r&r at home, their stories about the war was quite in contrast at what the news reported about the war.

There was a lone soldier. He walked with his fellow men. They also thought it was an adventure. They were wrong. The enemy mows them down, one by one. His friends graves lay with no name. The trenches were terrible, what was he living I. He thought, “Where is the adventure? Have I been told lies? I never knew.” And so he thought.

+SnoopyDoo The story about a poor fool marching into war thinking it would be something great, an adventure. Just like his peers. All of his peers die one by one before any contact with the enemy.. By blood, sweat, and tears our poor fool finally meets the end of his march and realizes the march just led to death. On the other side, he finds the enemy. A poor fool, just like him. Alone. All of his peers died too.. The poor fools are the same.. They survived their march, just to die in the end. War is not fun, nor an adventure. War brings nothing but death. It's a Machina Mortem. A Machine of Death .

I liked this one; it displays the barbarity of war and although some might not get what the machine is at the end, the point is made in an excellent manner. I also have to say that giving the eyes of the gas masks what amounts to iron targeting sights was a nice but subtle touch.

The ending shows that in war two different men who have suffered both in the same way will come across each other's paths and eventually be forced to kill. The video shows how the two soldiers in the end have both suffered and are the lone survivors of the hell they went in before meeting each other and forced to kill because of the 'machine.'

This is why I like Battlefield 1. Off topic, I know, but hear me out. Battlefield 1 is a fun game made by Dice that’s set in World War 1, the same war as this animation. Anyways, my point is is that Battlefield 1 is great game not because it’s chaotic and fun to play, but because it shows how war is hell and that it’s actually bleak, depressing, and rife with death and destruction. Hop into a game of Operations by yourself, turn off your HUD (heads up display), wear a good pair of headphones, turn up the volume, and don’t talk. If you do so, you can hear the panicked shouts of soldiers, young men screaming in agony and pleading for their lives. This is can all be heard in Battlefield 1 if you take a moment to listen, and it sends home the message that war is no game, that war will chew you up and spit you out as if your existence meant nothing.

This comment is random as hell but is something I would post. The only other games that top it’s atmosphere is Verdun, Beyond the Wire, and Hell Let Loose (I know that isn’t a WW1 game.) You describe it perfectly, DICE really gave it there all on World War One.

People had been slowly been awakening since American Civil War. it was the scale of World War 1 that finally drove the message to the home. Until then, meat grinder had already been chewing people up, but the war had never really gotten static. World War 1 had the same meat grinder, yet no advances. Nothing happened, except people died. That was the final nail in the coffin of "war is glorious" mentality.

@@wyvern3960 They are not gods. They are not legends. I've known those of the WWII generation. They never glorified war. They never bragged about their time fighting. Telling veterans 'thank you for your service' is entirely modern. WWII veterans never wanted to be glorified.

@@janbaer3241 There is a difference between glorification and respect - respect for the willingness to put one's life on the line for others, respect for the bravery shown in the face of the insane firepower of the modern world, and respect for those who have paid the ultimate price on others' behalf. If anyone glorifies war, they're an idiot who's never known true terror, pure and simple - but to pay your respects to those who are willing to do such a thing so others do not have to suffer is not only good, it should be expected. Please don't put down the respect shown to veterans as a glorification of war.

@@janbaer3241 And they are respected for that. That does not mean that soldiers should not be respected in a different manner - the elements and nature trying to kill you is a natural danger in those professions. Soldiers and police are in a profession where they are a literal shield for the rest of the society they spring from - they give their time and sometimes their lives in order so that others may exist in peace, unhampered by the privations of other humans.

Young men march to war for glory, but modern war is not the glorious thing that had been promised. It's a meat grinder, mechanized war. As the regiment marches, the machine that the war has become continues to operate and one by one, the regiment is depleted. At the end, the last surviving soldier reaches the proverbial meatgrinder and sees his counterpart. Instead of realizing futility of it all... he reaches for his gun to shoot, because that is what he is told to do.
