It is based on the traditional story of the same name. The story of Shim Chung, the daughter of a poor blind farmer. The peasant signs a deal with a monk to deliver 300 sacks of rice in return of his sight, but is unable to deliver the goods. Shim Chung agrees to be sacrificed to the God of the Sea on behalf of sailors who need to appease the deity. She is thrown into the sea and meets the god who praises her for her filial piety. Shim Chong returns to the surface inside a giant lotus that fishermen take to the king of the land. The king falls in love with her and helps her find her desperate father who has gone missing by organizing a feast for all the blind people in the kingdom.

Some people say she survived and it is a happy ending. I am not so sure to be honest. Looks like she died. And what we see is her fleeting dreams.

In the folk tale, the sea god saves her but I think it's pretty clear in the modern animation above, she drowns and only dreams of giving her father his vision back (in one eye), before everything goes black again. She's drugged, she can barely fight, much less swim, and she makes no attempt to swim in the end.

no, you and, as of right now, at least 297 others are reading into it what's not at all there..you don't even realize that she only looked in ONE *basic* direction after she realized she was on a very large ship..so, at that moment, the possibility is open that she wasn't far away from shore - which she obviously wasn't, as it turns out...AND, he told her she could go/would be going back to school..which could have been a lie, of course..but why lie when he thought she was still too drugged up to escape? anyway, not everything in movies is a metaphor.🙄 and btw, in the original, KOREAN story, she does, magically, reunite with her father, who, magically, gets his eyesight back, which for the characters, is a *real* experience...like how for the *characters* in the story of *"Sleeping Beauty,"* she is magically resurrected by the prince guy, with a real kiss: "Sim Cheong throws herself into the sea of Indangsu, she is summoned by the Dragon King, is resurrected in a lotus flower, and becomes an empress. Now an empress, Sim Cheong hosts a feast for the blind and reunites with her father. This is based on Korea's traditional literature called 'Shim chung', which has the same name as the girl in the video. In the original, Shim chung is a sweet hearted girl who always think and willing to do anything for her blind father. She made a deal (tricked that she believed it can open her father's sight), and died by sacrificing herself. Luckily she was saved by the sea king because of her kindness, and sent back safely covered with big lotus flower. The boatman found the flower and sent it to the human king.(and thought the Shim chung was sent from the sky) The king thought the Shim chung was perfect to be his wife. They got married (Shim chung became a queen) and met her father again (Shim chung held a blind people party to see her father). It was a happy ending compared to the animation (showing the tragedy and reality if Shim chung was tricked and destined to die by organ sale instead of transplanting the eye safely to her blind father as she dreamed.) Sorry for the bad english, but if you read my comment, hope it helped :-) + More in detail In the beginning of the story, Shim chung's father was saved by the monk. (He fell into a small stream by a mistake) The monk said that he could open the father's sight if he receives a 300 sacks of rice. And Shim chung's father accepted the deal. Whether it's a truth or not, Shim chung and her father had no amount of rice to afford it. But it was one and only chance for Shim chung (her life was all about her father) so she decided to be sold as a sacrifice for the sea. (which she received the rice as a price) This is why the sea king found Shim chung and saved her.

A very terrifying story since many events like this have actually happened in real-life but without happy endings. The main protagonist deserves a mountain of respect!

I actually don't think this had a happy ending :( I think she drowned, because she was drugged and couldn't swim. The scene at the end was her imagining what could've been reality.

Kankan Mahadi i guess it’s however you want to interpret it because there’s no indication that it *wasn’t* a dream at the end either. you don’t see her physically make it out alive or even try to swim back up, she pretty much accepted her fate the moment she jumped.

Among Korean folktales, there is a girl named Simcheong and her blind father. In that fairy tale, Simcheong falls off the boat for her father. This animation seems to be modern.

Two main characters, Shim-Chung was voiced by Choi- Hui-Seo, which is one of most anticipated actress in Korea. and Doctor was voiced by Son-Suk-Goo, which is also an actor who is being recognized by people recently. And I gotta say, I was very surprised to see their names on the end credit.

sugar cookies I wouldn’t of watched this if I had known it was gonna be dark I just kept watching hoping that there would be some sort of hopeful light but it just seem to be getting darker and darker so I understand what one of the other people said about it popping up in their recommendations did the same for me which makes no sense because I don’t watch stuff like this. I definitely give it a thumbs up because the animation is incredible and just because I don’t like the story doesn’t mean it’s not creative just definitely not my style in any way shape or form

The female character is very well rendered, especially the look. But there is a strange error: the surgeon is injured in the left arm (4:06), he is bleeding, then when he pursues the girl there is no longer any trace of the injury (4:57 - 5:08).

5 signs you should not Enter a place 1: Its dark 2: It's dark 3: It's dark 4: It's dark 5: WAAAAAYYYYYY to good graphics, i mean HOLY SHIITTTTTT, IS THIS GOOOD!!!! there is a bar from 1-10 and they reached just 100000000 with .... everything?! Perfect Camera motion, check. Perfect Story, check. Perfect realistic graphics, double dripple check. And just like how the Charakters moovee.... i can't say anything bad about this?! And especially i am proud about the voice actors and the one of the man at the scene where the girl stabs the scalpelle (i think it is i have no idea, tape cutter?) into his arm and like how he screams sounds just so realistic!!! Perfect short movie, i love it!!!
