When visual effects first entered films, they allowed for visuals we’ve never seen before. But just like with any technological innovation, a backlash against CGI eventually followed. With artificial intelligence entering filmmaking, where do we go from here?
I really appreciate the eloquent discussion that Senior Compositor and VFX Supervisor Marco Baratto has with me, and makes a case for and against both sides of the argument.
With 10+ years of VFX industry experience, Marco is more than ever interested in being an integral part of it through compositing and creative leadership. An understanding of light, color and composition are essential to his approach. His additional interests include photography, concept art, cinema and mathematics.
His most recent credit is the role of a Digital Artist in Christopher Nolan’s OPPENHEIMER. His other credits include EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.
Let me know what you think about this particular talk: On which side of the argument do you find yourself these days? And what do you think about the presence of AI in our work?

This is a timely discussion: How much CGI is too much CGI? With so many Marvel sequels in the recent years, is there a backlash against stories that require visual effects? What do you think? Let me know where you stand by leaving a comment below. But first: Check out this interview with Senior Compositor Marco Baratto!

As much as I love VFX and CGI, but we need to get back to the day of doing things with practical effects. I was watching Dawn of the Dead last night and I still remember how sick that movie is. And for CGI, my favourite characters to this day is Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest. Camera work... A simple fade is all I need personally

I dont disagree I’m a fan of using CG where it matters. These days it’s far cheaper to do everything CG but if you’re going to do that, have the budget for it rather than quantity over quality which happens a lot. Ultimately it just comes down to making the time to do it, I’ve seen plenty of terrible practical effects that suffered from lack of preparation as well. So I think it’s more just not to rush the process is always what happens these days. There’s a big show that’s coming out next month, I have a shot in the trailer that I only spent 3 hours on the actual shot (it’s a bit crowd sequence). Back in day we would be spending weeks on something like that

@@AllanMcKay I remember how difficult crowd shots are (I've never done them) and that requires so much preparation. I would love to see vfx where the artists actually get the time to do it right, and with the right staff. For modern movies, I love how Thanos was done and I know that takes months to get a photorealistic character who is humanoid to pass for real. Most importantly, your health is super important and do what you can to avoid burnout

@@KRGraphicsCG for sure! I will say the only reason that shot took so little time was I had built a strong motion capture pipeline and tools to distribute it all, so the heavy lifting was done up front. But usually there’s a process with the client rather than v1 getting finalled. Definitely should share the workflow sometime! And I love infinity war Thanos, I know endgame was ‘improved’ but I didn’t like the shaders as much, felt too shiny

@@AllanMcKay I kinda noticed that with the skin and armour on Thanos. Honestly, I'm more interested in the face rig and so much so, I've made my own in Modo. Even went as far as making my own head mounted rig for facial performance capture. I don't know machine learning so I'm doing the faces by hand

It always depend on the project. CGI can be a marvel but it have to be use with wisdom. I think that a VFX supervisor should be as important as the cinematographer for the director. For me best result are always when they blend real location, real set and CG. Some movies are oversaturate with layers of CG and the result is not good. It have to be spaces for the eyes to acclimate and relax. Creative team have to recover more ground of action and more time to do it well in pre production. For me, the best blend of practical and CGI will always be The Lord of the Rings. These movies are masterclass for immersion, visual and storytelling. In recent years, Avatar is an exception for great CG but i still prefer the work of Weta on Apes movies. Focus on CGI where it is needed the most, give the right amount of time for the rendering but the studio have to let the team really think their stuff to blend practical and CG in a optimal way. P.S. I hope Wes Ball will get it right with Zelda. I really need a good, immersive fantasy movie with the right pipeline and blend of practical and CG. I hope they make a freaking awesome Ganon Mo Cap CGI!
