I had been a generalist the whole my career, starting from year 1999. I started from 3ds Max version 1.0 and I am still a 3ds Max 2024 user. 🙂I just add additional tools to my workflow from time to time but the main software is 3ds Max.

Great discussion. The next wave of storytellers will be a lot more used to the tools, and take advantage of the tools, but it does come back to working with a great team, and passionate people. While the tools and tech are amazing, it is the people, their connection and skill that is the heart of storytelling. Awesome. Thanks Allan and Kim

Man I agree. The thing that really bothers us is the emotional pain we take. some people are hard as rocks but the majority isn't and whenever they get discomfort they cry, yell or quit in rage. Pretty sure if you take away the emotional pain from a person they would be crazy enough try again and again to until they succeed.

How to get a job at Blizzard? My answer is.. DON'T. 🚫💀 Microsoft will end up letting you go.

It happened the same to me. When I was in my 20's, I just looked at my belly button. It was all about me, my professional development and my ambitions. Once I reached my 30's and beyond, suddenly the most important thing was my nephew, watch him grow and having memories together. My partner, my friends, my family... It's cold out there. It suddenly becomes so hard to be sorounded by people who actually don't know me and that naturally don't care about me. Every day. On a city or country where I don't know anyone. And to think that the studios ask that from me: just move from one place to another. I can't do that anymore. So remote work becomes the only reason why I'm still working on this industry. Everyone is different though.

As someone who has been a fan of Wes Ball for a long time but is only just seeing this after dropping out of film school due to a disability and financial problems, this is INCREDIBLY inspiring. I've been struggling with wondering if I'll ever be able to go into film or make my own films, but hearing from my favorite director that its OKAY to fail just like... turns my doomsday perspective on its head. Thank you for posting this.

I made a video you can search for it but it’s called 20 years of failure or something like that. Might be worth checking out. I was excited to give this talk because we all think everyone else had it easy and that first job was easy. But there’s constant failure and rejection until there isn’t. Just we never get to see that from other people so we think it’s just us that is going through it. It’s definitely ok to fail, it’s part of the process. But sticking with it is everything. Thank you for sharing, actually planning to reach out to Wes about doing another episode now apes is out!

The debt some of these students carry in the US is outrageous. There are definite benefits to school but self learning and good online mentorships can be lot cheaper.

If you’re not a reliable or capable artist, you’ll rarely get connections or collab opportunities. Get better and put ur work out there! Try to be easy to work with too, communicate!

Being easy to work with is everything, I can’t stress that one enough. I do think it’s worth trying to get people to take you under their wing whether you’re amazing yet or not, you’re bound to get a lot of no’s before a yes, but it’s going to make a big impact on your career. But you’re absolutely right, nurture your talent as your primary focus Thanks Kurokishizx!

I see no negative downsides to learning to code. I don’t think it’s make or break that you learn to code but it opens up so many doors, and as you said there’s loads of benefits to learning to architect programs

22:53 to achieve the edge; the whole shot could be blue sky and graded. The background looks like a matte painting there was extensive roto on this though. My colleague did the cornfield, said he would go to sleep and just see corn for months. Good video.

Trying to marry DCCs and making tools linking to Unreal… …and automating the process is a key thing. Chat GPT4 or its equivalent is what I’ve read about it. Looking up the correct guts of the relative scripts and training the A.I. be a pain. I would have to create something that the A.I. would look at before it asks me any queries (i wonder who taught me that?).

John is always the most interesting game developer to listen to. Too bad he betrayed the moment, he said sometime ago in a stream that "we are long past the time of making our own engine". Like bro, I'm still making my game in C. You are wrong on that, John!
@AllanMcKay
@AllanMcKay 2 ай бұрын
Interesting! Yeah I’ve thought a lot about the monopoly on game engines now. There’s only a handful commercial ones and most are great. But doesn’t mean there’s not room to develop new tech from scratch and try to introduce your own spin on things. Thanks for sharing!
