“Minmax happiness and suffering” AI: *enslaves humanity and stuffs them with drugs to keep them “happy”*
@frostburnspirit9065

Wouldn't "minmax happiness and suffering" mean "minimum happiness and maximum suffering"? Or is that what you just described?
@icarue993
@icarue993 3 жыл бұрын
@@frostburnspirit9065 Depends on how you decode it. It could mean min happyness/suffering and max the otherone. Max both and min the rest, etc. Example of the second one is: in D&D, minmaxing a fighter, means minmaxing str and con. Which means dump int, wis, cha etc. You really wouldn't say to minmax str and int, for example.
@Squirrel354
@Squirrel354 3 жыл бұрын
@@icarue993 Actually, in this context ge is referring to a specific programming technique, and it always involves 2 parameters, one to minimize and the other to maximize, so it would mean minimizing happiness/suffering and maximizing the other. One of its main uses is to program AI for one-on-one games like checkers, tic-tac-toe and even chess (although there are better methods nowadays).

I was either unsure if it meant what I thought it did, or was trying to say that I didn't understand why robots enslaving humanity would be a bad thing (to be funny). I don't know which one. I probably assumed it meant "minimize happiness and maximize suffering" when grey said that? I don't remember

In defense of music, While some styles have much repetition and patterns with certain motifs such as classical and baroque, music is typically derived from expression, something which jazz does just as much as other musical styles. While jazz, to an extent, is associated with improv, that doesn't mean it has no pattern. If anything, they're all about manipulating patterns in a way that sounds good while expressing what the musician(s) wants to convey, the same way a classical composer would. ***Note***: Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but stating that jazz has no pattern isn't completely accurate, Grey.

It's simply that CPGrey has no taste in art, he sees everything from a purely mechanical point of view. It's why he suggests we try to "live forever", even though it's no more feasible than it has ever been. More people are living longer, but we haven't yet found a way to extend the natural lifespan, or preserve ailing old minds. And, if you're going to artificially extend the brain's biological limit, then how can you even dileneate between a soul and a function? Death is inevitable, be it by silicone or guillotine, the blood will stop pumping through your head eventually.

With regards to knowledge and technology, the Dunning-Kruger effect applies every time: 1 • Starts either believing it's impossible or just not knowing about it 2 • Hearing about it or considering the ways to do it, but admitting it's Sci-Fi 3 • Realizing it's actually doable, but wondering whether it's practical and worth it 4 • Super strongly believing it's awesome and quite feasible. Trust me guys, it's only 30 years away from now! --> tis Mount Stupidity 5 • Realizing the challenge ahead and finding it more and more tricky to achieve 6 • Slowly abandoning all hope of seeing that understood and done 7 • Then gradually getting shit done and _really_ knowing how it all works and can be done, at last.

>Says Jazz has no structure and repetition *takes a deep breath* Well, actually... *You Died - however the Nexus traps you; you shall remain in this world as a soul, forever* Ok - maybe some types of jazz, but I get the feeling you haven't really been exposed to a lot of jazz if you think it lacks structure. It's not always an obvious structure, but standard hard bop has a pretty well-defined palette with which to play. It usually involves a melody or hook, which players take turns soloing over until everybody on stage has had their moment to reinterpret the melody - then there's a big finish. It's actually more rigid than it seems. You may find it "anti-useful;" there's no quick way to learning to appreciate jazz and you probably have things you would rather be doing. But your opinion here is either misinformed or not explained thoroughly. I would like to hear more about your concept of "musical mind control." I don't think you're wrong, I just want to know more of what you think about that.

pointers are something I'm still working on - but I think the main problem with why people think it's so hard, is that most programming books/lessons don't present the full picture. Everything in a program exists in a physical location in memory. No different in concept to looking at a file in a hex editor. So, if you have a (32 bit) integer, it's going to occupy 4 consecutive bytes in memory. A pointer (in a 32- bit application), *also* occupies 4 consecutive bytes in memory. But instead of a value, like say, 5, its value is another address. That's the address it "points" to. So let's say you have that integer, let's call it 'a'. And you have an int pointet called 'aptr'. Now, you just have to assign the address of 'a' to 'aptr', and 'aptr' now points to the location in memory where 'a' is. so... int a = 5; int * aptr = &a; So, what's the..uh, point? Well, a pointer is basically a bookmark. Sure, you could just write down the paragraph you need, and maybe you won't ever need a bookmark. But, if you want to actually read the actual paragraph again, it helps. But it's a bit more than that. Instead of a dead tree, think of a bookmark for a living document, such as a Wikipedia page. Again, you could make a copy and just use that, but if you wanted to get the current page at will, the bookmark is what's going to allow you to do that. Oh yeah, the bookmark also works both ways. So if you write something, and send it through your bookmark, it replaces the page. That's the basics- there's more advanced stuff of course, but most of that boils down to changing where you put that bookmark, or what that bookmark is. The first part is pretty straightforward, but the second part needs some explanation. See, giving a pointer a type is more of an aid, than a requirement. After all, a pointer merely points to a spot in memory. It's up to you to say what exactly is *at* that address. Is it an integer? a float? three floats? it can be anything. So long as the memory itself agrees. So needless to say, you can "cast" a pointer as any type of pointer (or not, that's why void pointers exist)- you'll just have problems when you attempt to read and or write to that memory, if you're wrong. Whether that's simply garbage data, or a crash, because you accessed memory you can't read/write, is completely random.

I don't think CGP Grey knows much about jazz.

Strideo1 his slight knowledge about about jazz almost killed me... It can have structures and be repetitive(come on!artists like L. Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald etc etc etc) and also not, thats's probably why it is so diverse and why I love it!

Yeah, I'm not big on really "out there" avant-garde jazz but I love Miles Davis (especially early Miles Davis), Chett Baker, Billie Holiday, Dave Brubeck, Benny Goodman, and more, the ones you mentioned too! And the songs they perform are typically full of pattern and repetition and repeating hooks and melodies. In addition to the important role jazz played in American pop culture I also love how far ahead jazz was in racial integration too. Benny Goodman made sure to bring in talented black musicians who weren't even in his band for his famous Carnegie Hall concert. Dave Brubeck cancelled a lot of concerts in southern venues when he was told he wasn't allowed to perform with black musicians in his band on the same stage. Jazz musicians, like a lot of musician, intermingled and cared more about the talent than the politics. My wife wasn't really into jazz when we first met but she really loves it now. I think a lot of people just don't know where to start or aren't exposed to the right jazz music and then just dismiss it, sadly.

I used to be like him when I was much younger. And then I got a job working in a music store and I was forced to listen to stuff that other people liked. I still don't hunger for jazz, but the constant exposure revealed to me that a lot of my opinions about jazz (that he expressed) were total bullshit. It isn't a bunch of squeaking out random notes, there is a lot of deep structure.

i was surprised to learn there are people that actively dislike jazz. it thought it was one of those more or less neutral and universal music genres that while most people don't love, no one really hates. specially when there are so many popular songs today lacking a melody entirely. what the fuck, i don't get how anyone can find hearing that shit actually pleasing. stuff like brazillian funk. seriously makes me sick to my stomach.
