Thank you so much for joining us in Reykjavik (which I know I (Claire) pronounced wrong in the video 😭) as we ate our way around the city. 🥰 You all are in for a fantastic treat- this Iceland series might just be one of our best ones yet. If you follow us on Patreon and Instagram, you would already know that we chose to return to VAN LIFE (!!!!!) for a whole week, as we explored the majestic Icelandic countryside. haha I was very happy with her eating the shark ! :) I was raised eating shark so i love it , but not so much the brennivín.. But you will often find the "hard fish" and shark on the same table and both are very good, I eat 1-2kg's of "hard fish" every month

Chad and Claire, your Icelandic video was superb! The photographic shots did not go unnoticed. The food tour of Reykjavík was outstanding. I thought the food of France, Turkey, Greece,and Italy could not be surpassed, but I was wrong. The Icelandic food just wanted one to buy a ticket to Iceland. I had never seen you devour any food as you devoured the Icelandic hot dogs! Thank you for educating me on the niceties of Iceland!

Great video, as always. James and I did Iceland a few years ago, and drove what we called the 'Citroën from hell' around the entire island for 8 days, staying at guest houses and hotels along the way. With the price of meals there, we lived on bacon wrapped pysler often, but didn't have the nerve to try the fermented shark. You two rock! Peace Steve and James from PA

cool that you got some prince polo, it has some history in iceland, its been imported from poland for decades and is one of the most popular candies in iceland, even more popular than it ever was in poland. it has had á great cultural signifigance, highly recomend listening to an artist who adopted the icelandic spelling prins póló as his artist name, unfortunetly he passed away earlier this week and it is a great loss, he was one of the greatest artists we ever had. hopefully you enjoyed beautiful views and fantastic smiles while in iceland c:

You did a much better job at pronouncing things than I ever would have. 🙃 It's nice that you guys put in so much effort to try and learn and say things the right way! My girlfriend and I also went to Cafe Loki while we were there. It was so dang good. That lamb was incredible...and like you said, that rye bread was something special. Surprisingly sweet. Not like any rye bread I'd ever had, that's for sure. It was funny to see your reaction to eating hákarl because everyone always makes it out to be this big thing! I thought it was totally fine as well, and the Brennivin was quite smooth. But I also like stinky tofu, durian and other flavors that a lot of others tend to find "offensive". 😂 Icelandic food was actually surprisingly good. The ONLY thing we had that didn't satisfy us was the lobster soup, which we had at Seabaron. It was almost $20 for a tiny soup, and had almost nothing in it. Like..one tiny piece of lobster, and then all broth. Wayyyy overhyped by tourists. I'm curious to see if you guys made it to Brauð & Co. Best cinnamon rolls ever. 😋 Excited to see the rest of your series. I hope you enjoyed Iceland as much as I did!
@ChadandClaire
@ChadandClaire Жыл бұрын
Thanks for recognizing our attempts to pronounce things properly! The lobster soup was definitely on the smaller size especially for the cost, but we thought it was pretty decent, but honestly it's got nothing compared to the pysler haha. Ah we didnt make it there! Cinnamon Rolls would have been a fantastic addition!

@@ChadandClaire I'm from the East Coast of Canada, from a province that is known for (actual) lobster, much like Maine. So knowing that I could probably buy a full fresh lobster for the cost of the tiny soup we got definitely played a part in my opinion. 😆 Oh man. You guys seriously missed out. Even after two years of living in Germany and having access to some of the best baked treats in the world, it stood out as one of the best pastries I'd ever had. 🤤

They did not ferment hakarl with urine. The Greenland shark has a high level of uric acid in it's flesh (because it has no urinary tract, and that is how it rids itself of liquid waste) that has to be eliminated in order for it to be edible. The shark is therefore pressed by weight underground to leach the uric acid out of it. The urine curing is an old myth.

The traditional "Harðfisk" process as practiced in the West Fjords of Iceland (where I live) was to start drying it during a freeze - the original freeze-drying method. The only seasoning was to soak it in seawater. The "dot over the i" was the proper natural humidity in the West Fjords that made the local Harðfisk special. Of course these laborious methods are not cost-effective, it is now a lost art and any Icelandic Harðfisk you get is produced by mechanical freezing, usually under-or-overdone, mostly over-dried.

Iceland is bittersweet to me.. I was there over New Years 93/94... was very remote & the discovery was great. I was back there a year ago.. still lots to see & do.. but now the web is saturated with info about it. The moral: I've learned that when I go somewhere new I want to mot overdue it w/ research...cause it becomes mundane & u end up living someone else's experience. Just a thought.

I have had lamb in several countries. The best flavor and texture has always been in Iceland. The fish paste, for me, should start with a quality cod. Haddock or Pollack are acceptable, as is Halibut. Putting it on any quality dark rye, which has a fairly neutral flavor, helps bring out the flavor of any herbs or spices used with the fish. Also, caraway seeds, which are liberally used in inferior rye breads, are an affront to anyone who values traditional bread making. Generally, traditional Icelandic foods are descended from old Norse, as is much of Icelandic culture. Adapted over the past thousand years of relative isolation from Europe to fit the local resources, I have enjoyed nearly every aspect of Icelandic food. Had I more resources, I would consider retiring there. Time for more coffee.

Whoever , when it come to food , there is no single reason in our planets for any traveler foodie to choose icleand as one platter in Iceland probably cost what I will.spend in 2 weeks in other places in Asia. Even for Icelandic, I think is cheaper to travel overseas include adding airfare for dining in two days than try to dine in your block... Sample sandwich or slice pizza 20.00+

The thing about 'fermenting it in piss' is mostly a myth and also mostly a misunderstanding of what the process of making 'Hákarl' is. A fresh shark has a high concentration of urea and trimethylamine oxide, enough to make it potentially lethally poisonous to humans if we eat it fresh. When the shark is fermented and processed it is left under a weight to press out the juices from the flesh, to get rid of as much of the urea as possible. This was traditionally done by burying it under sand and rocks, but today it's done in big plastic containers with holes drilled in the bottom and a weight on top. During this pressing time which lasts many weeks the urea in the flesh also breaks down into ammonia causing it to smell even stronger. The following hanging/drying process supposedly removes further moisture from the flesh but at that point it may be mostly water that is removed and not ammonia.
