In this episode of Back in the Garage I install new chain guides/sliders on my 2016 KTM 1290 Super Adventure. The process for install should be the same for all the current KTM Adventure bikes.

Thanks for the videos, replaced my slider yesterday and was able to do it without backing out the swing arm bolt. I removed the lower chain slider behind the foot peg held on by a 8mm bolt. This gave me enough room to slip the new chain slider in place. I still had to remove the front sprocket, chain guide and slave.

Thanks for the video. My 2018 1090 Adv R was a little different. I didn't have to fiddle with the swing arm to get the front sprocket off. Put it in neutral and wiggle while pulling worked fine. Same with install, except pushing of course. I did have to remove the lower chain slider / guide. This is attached to the frame near the center stand stop with a single 8mm bolt. This allowed me to move the chain such that the slider / guide that was worn be removed and reinstalled.

Once again Mario your instruction was spot on. I'm a long way from a mechanic but the entire process of replacing the chain slider only took about 2 hours start to finish. The only hiccup I had was the dealer had used red locktite on the front sprocket nut ..... I hit it with the heat gun for a couple of minutes and off it came no problem. Next project is the Stage 3 from Rottweiller. Your videos are GOLD! A massive thank you!

Its the chain sider thats attached to the frame, located under the front of the swing arm. When l change the slider thats wraps round the front of the swing l take the swing arm out. Straight forward job compared to the way this guy is doing it. To remove the swing arm; first remove the back wheel, then remove the 2 screws that hold the shock gaurd in place. Next remove the upper and lower bolts that secured the shock, dont forget to discontent the 2 plug connector if your ktm has electronic suspension. Then remove the swing arm bolt. Change the chain slider, my way you dont even need to remove the front sprocket cover. Also why the swing arm is out, inspect the swing arm bearings and bushes for wear and regrease them....put back together in the reverse order.

I see both methods. I’m having to replace the chain and sprockets too. Bought it all, but now see I could have Eeked more miles out of all of them. Just didn’t want to eat the swing arm halfway through summer. This method keeps you from having to split an otherwise good chain, which you don’t want to do. Short cuts are crux when you don’t want this sitting around the shop: 1. Didn’t pull the tire! Awesome! And, once you get it off, you can wheel the bike outside and blast all the chain grease crud out with your steam cleaner or pressure washer! 2. Didn’t have to remove the chain! 3. Didn’t have to remove the swing arm! Since I am replacing sprockets and chain, all of this is coming off anyway, except the swing arm. If I can pull the front sprocket without removing the swing arm bolt, I’m doing that too, but it’s all wheeling outside and getting a good cleaning. I don’t think the previous owner EVER did that! Great video Mario! I just wish I knew which direction the sprocket nut is supposed to turn to loosen?

Great video. Im sitting here with the parts and the dealer told me I had to split the chain do get the job done. The chain was renewed as an emergency on a rod trip this summer, and was not aware that the slide should have been changed same time. Now il just dig into it, and have the job done. Thanks.

Thanks. Very helpful. The chain slider wear out pretty quick but you can let it sit a lot for more what the manual says. KTM seams to have a small design flag here and the dealer didn't a clue about it. I will do it with the chain and sprockets.

Wish this video was out when I did mine, but I was able to do it fairly easily without loosening or removing the swing arm bolt so that doesn't seem to be necessary if you want to save a step, though probably makes it easier. FYI, mine loosened even with factory spec torque (from the factory) so throw some thread lock on the attachment bolts. Even lost one on the road somewhere, so I picked up a couple spares for the toolkit. Cheap insurance. Replaced mine at roughly 17k. Thanks for the video Mario.

Yeah, it really depends on the bike whether or not the clearance exists on the swingarm. Some you're able to shimmy the sprocket off while mine is just too damn tight. Fortunately, doesn't take much longer. Thanks for watching and be safe out there!

Someone else mentioned this in the comments, but a simpleton like myself has to ask the same question of why this piece needs to be 1 piece? If you bought a replacement and split it in the middle (or close to where the chain doesn't touch), wouldn't it perform the same task and make replacement significantly easier? Just curious as this seem a lot of work. There has to be an easier way to skin the cat.

Hi Mario, I’m about to do this so I found your video, but I think you had quite a bit more wear left in the sliding guard based on my interpretation of the OEM specifications. My OEM manual says...”When the chain sliding guard is new, the rivets are half visible at the bottom edge of the recess. When the rivets of the chain are no longer visible at the bottom edge of the recess of the chain sliding guard: - Change the chain sliding guard”. I took that to mean that when you can no longer see any portion of the rivet (ie the top of the rivet is no longer visible), the sliding guard must be replaced. If that’s correct, you were only about halfway through. No?

Tip for sprocket,,,,,,,, i just use a dremel to shave a very very small amount off the swing arm so the teeth have clearance .
@gruner318
@gruner318 4 жыл бұрын
I did this exact thing. It only takes a >TINY< amount of grinding to get the front sprocket off. It is an absolute mystery to me why the engineers didn't simply add 1 extra millimeter of clearance between the front sprocket and the swingarm. I generally love my 1290 adv but this is a poorly designed feature, making routine maintenance substantially more difficult than it should be, especially since adventure touring bikes should be maintainable in the field. KTM, if you're reading this, fix it!

@2WR

The easiest way to accomplish it is by putting the chain back on both sprockets and having an assistant hold down on the rear brake. I used an old clutch holding tool to keep the sprocket from spinning while I torqued the nut down since I was solo.

Mario, I need some help! I live in Martinsburg/Hedgesville, and I am torn between a rode biased bike, and more of a "light adventure" style. I'm originally a sport bike guy, and I've only ever road the twisties here. Where can I go on my current daily commuter (nc700x) to get off the beaten path and see if I'd enjoy some light adventure riding? Not sure if I'm ready to sacrifice some sport, for a bit of trail/dirt roads, but this NC has gotta go, regardless. Current debate is a Kawasaki Versys 1000 or V Strom 1000. Thanks for any help. Swinging Bridge Road is a nice dirt/gravel road that goes up (or down depending on the direction you're headed) the mountain. You can get to it via Tuscarora Pike or Dry Run Rd. Posey Hollow Rd is also another fun dirt road that you can get to from Shanghai Rd after coming through Sleepy Creek or off of Winchester Grade Rd. Posey Hollow runs along the South Fork of Sleepy Creek.

@2WR
@2WR 6 жыл бұрын
If your chain tension is correct, the next thing to look at is proper wheel alignment. If the rear wheel alignment isn't straight, it could cause your slider to wear out prematurely as well. Don't just got off of the alignment marks on the swing arm adjusters. While I use the Pro Motion chain alignment tool, you can also check it by taking measurements from the swingarm pivot to the rear axle on both sides of the bike. Make sure the measurements are exactly the same.
