I demonstrate chain suck, and talk about what causes it, and how to fix/prevent it.
Chain suck is where the chain doesn't disengage from the chain ring, and wraps up the back of the chain ring up towards the front derailleur. This usually happens while shifting gears from one ring to another and usually while there is some load on the chain. Some of the main causes are a dirty drivetrain, poor lubrication, worn drivetrain, or a chain/chainring combo with mismatched wear.

You the man RJ. I cannot tell you how many times you have helped me to figure out issues with my bike that the bike shop could not solve or saved me money in doing my own repairs which have made me a better mechanic, rider and man. Your absolutely right about the worn crank with new chain being responsible for even more or worsening chain suck. I couldn't figure it out. I thought my chain line had changed somehow and was wondering if my bottom bracket was loose or frame bent. Decided to check all your videos for a possible diagnostic test and sure enough... PROBLEM SOLVED. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Figured it was the cranks, replaced them with better ones and dang it the problem got worse! Couldn't find anything on it didnt even know what to call the problem until this video popped up. An ofset Derailer can also cause it. And if thats been unaligned for too much time the wear on the ring will be offset so when aligning the derailer you first may not have had chainsuck but after correcting the derailer ofset you suddenly do get it. A quick pass of a grinder or file can correct it. If not then replace.

Hi RJ I got a problem, I converted my old bike from 5spd to 7 spd with new 11spd wheels and 7spd cassette. I have all the needed spacers on the hub. The problem is that if I change to the smallest cog the chain gets stuck between the frame and the cassette, while it stays on the cog (it is not dropping of it) what can I do besides adding a washer on the axle?
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 6 жыл бұрын
Probably add spacers. If the bikes was 5 speed, the spacing was maybe 120mm? For 7 speed, it is normally 126mm. But a 11speed wheel will probably be 130mm spacing. Did you remove spacers to fit the 11 speed wheel in 126mm dropouts or something? I thing a 11speed freehub is slightly wider than a 10speed freehub. Maybe the 7 speed chain is wider than the 11 speed chain is the issue. IDK. You are just going to have to figure it out.

Hi, I have 2 chainrings, tiagra 4700. Bigger 50T ring is getting worn/sharp. My dealer told me a BBB 46T would work - I wanted a smaller ring. I moved the front derailler down as the ring is smaller. When downshifting the chain gets stuck between the two rings. I cleaned everything, plus new chain. smaller chain ring isn't worn much. I checked to see if i had the small ring on correctly, drive side down that ring up, i can read the writing on it. Plus the 4 bolt interface has a groove and the cranks have a notch, so it is correctly oriented. Plus flipped the other way there is a bigger gap between them. With my old 50T I never had a problem shifting, chain would just drop nicely. I am testing it out on a flat side street not at high speed. It does shift, but it usually slips on the downshift. I checked the chain, it is a 10 speed chain. Thanks! Also small chain ring is not rounded, i use mostly the big ring.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 4 жыл бұрын
It sounds like there is too big of a gap between the chain rings. I can't tell you why.
@alutious
@alutious 4 жыл бұрын
@@RJTheBikeGuy yeah that's what i am thinking. I would have to take it apart, Again, to compare the measurement. I also notice the old chainring's width is tapered - getting wider as it gets closer to the axle, so there is a kind of Jump/ramp the chain follows towards the smaller ring as the chain exits this ramped larger ring. The old ring looks like the teeth are far left, but the new ring is not as thick so it is already sucked as far left as it can go. So I am thinking maybe i need to move the front derailler limit further to the left and hope it moves more when i shift down. My downshifting was perfect before. The upshifting doesn't have a problem. I think my chainline changed, i also have a new bb to stop the creaking (3rd time creaking, lots of water/winter commuting). My chain hopped the big rear cog into the spokes for the first time ever. I was testing riding a small road nearby, i carried my bike home, partially removed the tire and removed the cassette to get the chain out, since it was stuck. Luckily i stopped pedalling, the black spokes lost a tiny bit of paint but are undamaged.

My chain length might be too long but that wouldn't do that would it? If it was chain tension I could test it in low gear.

@@RJTheBikeGuy Hi BBB got back to me and said my chain was too long. I have a 11-36 cassette with my 34T chainring and this new 46T big ring down from the 50. I measured half the circumference and ends up being about 1" shorter. I changed gears on the bigger cassette cogs where more tension occurs and that seemed to work better. I removed a link (2 segments, 1") and it improved but still slack chain on the 11T rear, so i think i need to remove another 1". How does that sound? If you reduced your chainring that much, how much do you think you would reduce your chain length?

In the spring/summer, when I start to use it again, I will use the "cable ties" fix. Basically, you put a cable tie on the chainstay, and the extra cable you point towards the ground (you may need to cut some of it). This way when the chain gets stuck the cable tie will get on the way and release it. There are some tutorials on KZfaq.

chain-suck happened to me today. let me explain the context. i replaced chain and cassette. front chainrings are only NOT new part of drivetrain. now, there is huge discussion on internet what to do with factory lube from new chain. after all information i read (from "don't even touch it" to "completely remove it") i decided to remove factory lube only from OUTER part of chain, and leave it inside of chain pins (i put chain degreaser on paper towel and ran it through chain while backpedaling). So i went to ride with non-lubircated new chain, new cassette, and old front chainrings. Not sure if chainrings are realy worn, or possibly factory lube (or no lube) caused chain-suck.

New chain, new cassette, old chain rings. And you get chain suck. Like in this video. Hmmmm.

yea i just, was hoping naively that i can get away with it, and save some money at least on front part of drivetrain. ah well, guess not.

Shrug. Unstick it. Figure it out. There is not a standard solution.

Noel Castillo What if you need all the gears for touring? Also 1x means massive jumps between teeth on the cassette.

+Earl Grey "under load" is the key to his reply. IF you are under load and must shift, you momentarily "unload" (relieve pressure on pedals while continuing to pedal). Done right, the shift will be good and no damage will be done to drive train. I hauled 350 lbs through hilly neighborhoods for years without damage. My colleagues did not underatand "unload" and regularly damaged the drive train.

Not in wet. Wax made for dry. Use Pedro's Ice Wax in a muddy ride and you'll get chain suck.

the chain line has well can cause chain suck

David Carvalho Yes, I agree that you can get chain suck from a bad chain line. I put a new chain, cranks, cassette, and rear derailleur on a bike trying to get rid of a chain suck problem. Finally I changed to a bottom bracket that moved the chainrings a few mm closer to the frame. Like magic the chain suck went away.

I thought that chain suck is when the chain goes in between the chainstay and the tyre

That is usually caused by a poorly adjusted rear derailleur, or bent derailleur/hanger.

Nope, I don't mean between the casette and spokes but stuck in between the chainstay and tire. I haven't had either of these problems but just thought it's that way.
