As someone who stopped playing JRPG's 20 years ago, but grew up playing what the creator Matthias Linda also played, ... This game was the most bizarre nostalgia-rush bombardment I didn't expect. A wholly unanticipated and welcome surprise: so many bad TBC and JRPG tropes were fixed and the good ones improved.

I am 30 hours into the game and think I'm only about halfway through act 2? It seems longer than many of the ps1 Final Fantasy games. One thing that I really enjoy is the layered exploration of the environments. Going through first on foot and then later in the sky armors to collect all the chests has been quite fun. Some environments are really like puzzles on how to get the chests as the take off and land mechanics for sky armors only work on certain types of terrain. Nothing is a slog or feels boring in this game EXCEPT the crystal fusion system. I found it cumbersome whenever I got a new weapon to upgrade it, remove crystals from the old weapon, add them to the new weapon. It would have been really helpful to have something like a 'transfer crystals' option when equipping new weapons and armor. Very small critique though that does not affect my enjoyment of the game though!

You're a genuinely great reviewer! I played a lot of JRPG classics when I was younger, but thought I had turned off turn-based gameplay as an adult. It turns out I just don't have the patience for a lot of the old design mechanics anymore, because Chained Echoes hooked me. The quality of life improvements are huge. I think my only problems with the game have been some of the dialogue feeling a little clunky, and the weapon/armour upgrading being overbearing to keep up with, but both are nitpicks.

This was an 80 or hundred hour game for me. I don't know what you're talking about saying it isn't long. It's at least as long as the PS One Final Fantasies and the last few areas are pretty killer, which is yet another improvement from classic JRPGs. You were spot on listing the ways that it improves upon the best games, I was thinking the same thing.

i think an indie (or oldschool) jrpg sweetspot is about 30-40 hours and for a triple A one about 70 hours is good. I make that distinction because triple A jrpg are usually paced differently; they have much more cinematic cutscenes and bigger maps. They are also usually voice acted which even in non-cutscene interactions make cutscenes go by slower. Play 5 hours of Xenoblade 3 and it feels you haven't even started, play 5 hours of FF9 and you've already been to 6 different locales and fought 4 bosses. They flow different. Oldschool ones feel much denser so I get a bit tired of them quicker, both in terms of play sessions and overall playthrough. I remember playing Persona 5 for like 12 hours straight without batting an eye, but an hour and a half of Xenogears left me pretty drained, and that's considering that I didn't like P5 all that much and Xenogears became my favorite game ever after finishing it. I was going through Chained Echoes but unfortunately got pretty busy and stopped playing it and haven't returned to it since. This review made me bump it up in my backlog so I'll start a new game soon and get back to it this time through to the end for sure, great review.
@gamersthumb
@gamersthumb 8 ай бұрын
Thanks! That’s a great point about the older ones feeling more dense. I have a ton of classics I missed out on back in the day, and as I go back I can definitely feel the pacing. It’s as though they knew you were gonna be playing this thing for months, even years, and there was no rush to move you along. Honestly, I have to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy those now, because I feel like I have limited time to play and I want to play everything
@Alic4444

@@gamersthumb I'm confused, wasn't keen kind of saying the opposite? "Play 5 hours of Xenoblade 3 and it feels you haven't even started, play 5 hours of FF9 and you've already been to 6 different locales and fought 4 bosses" sounds like they think older rpgs move you along quicker and have faster pacing, while modern games take a lot longer to get going. But as a result they feel like older games are more tiring to play?
@gamersthumb
@gamersthumb 8 ай бұрын
@@Alic4444 re-reading I think you’re right. But I think it might be one of those “you had to be there” things where the older ones felt like they were moving you through at a faster pace because it was so different from anything people had played before. For me playing some of the 90s JRPGs for the first time in 2023, it doesn’t feel fast paced. But I also don’t have a lot experience with these games yet. I will say ff7 is a really unique experience so far because every time I think I know what the game is like or what it’s about, another layer of the onion peels back and there’s so much more going on. That might be what he’s referring to as denser.

While the big studios are slowly turning their RPGs into bad action games, the indie devs are perfecting the formula. Final Fantasy 16 had a humongous budget but isn't nearly as much fun to play as Sea of Stars. Chained Echoes is taking the boring parts out of the standard RPG game and making it more fun, while the big devs are taking the fun parts out and adding in Devil May Cry battles and cringy af dialogue. Maybe we should all just stop buying AAA RPGs for a few years and see what happens to the industry.

All current indie rpg creators copy, for better or worse, old classics like chrono trigger or zelda and on top of that now the Americans want to call them "jrpg" thus losing all the meaning of what a conventional rpg and a jrpg are. Chained Echoes is not a jrpg, just like Sea of Stars is not, but they are both good games.
@gamersthumb
@gamersthumb 7 ай бұрын
That’s interesting, how do you define a jrpg?
@bonedboss
@bonedboss 7 ай бұрын
@@gamersthumb First of all, the "J" in "jrpg" is from Japanese, the "jrpg" has been used until a year ago to classify Japanese role-playing games, which are usually more fantastic compared to Western ones, for example you could know that skyrim is a western rpg and that tales of arise is a jrpg just by looking at them. Western rpgs tend to be more explicit in their content, and jrpgs tend to be soft on that. If I see an rpg like fallout, the witcher, dragon age, diablo, and I compare it to shin megami tensei for example, if you have knowledge you will know how to differentiate which is a jrpg and which is not, not even by the name. in Japanese because we could use xenoblade and with a little comparison you would notice the difference. It is a problem that they start making rpgs in Canada and then they catalog that rpg as "jrpg" in the future we will see games like mass effect next to jrpg like suikoden, and then the term "jrpg" will lose all its meaning, I don't know where from This trend comes from now cataloging rpgs not from Japan as jrpg, the jrpg genre was made only for Japanese role-playing games, but current indie rpg creators want to hang themselves on that genre by force and if you say something they censor you, you can look for the latest best selling ps4 jrpgs, below persona 4 is sea of stars which is not a jrpg. (Sorry for some obvious mistakes but my English is not very good.) (I also couldn't clarify my point well because I am more able to express it by speaking than by writing, I always fall short of words writing.)
@gamersthumb
@gamersthumb 7 ай бұрын
@@bonedboss no need to apologize, I think you make your point very well. I guess in my mind the J in jrpg was more like “Japanese style” vs literally from Japan. Another descriptor I see used instead of jrpg is TBRPG for turn-based RPG. That gets rid of the geographical confusion.
