On this edition of the Farm Hand's Companion Question and Answer Show, Pa Mac discusses his chainsaw attachment for milling lumber on his small farm, and whether or not ripping chains really work. Can you use a regular chainsaw chain for milling rough cut lumber and boards?
The Alaskan Mark IV is now available for sale various places online.
The Beam Machine doesn't appear to be available any longer, but other similar products like the Strongway Chainsaw Sawmill Beam Cutter and the Timber Tuff Chain Saw Lumber Cutting Guide are.

Grampa died relatively young (53) in 1990, I still have his Granberg sharpening jig, looks like they still make the same unit today.

Watching your videos over the years I've probably had countless questions come up in my mind that are lost to the wind now, ha. Want to thank you though. Your videos have been an inspiration to me here on our little mountain homestead and given me great ideas. Building a small home for sheep w timber here in the fashion of the milking station you built for your cow. Also gotten sound wisdom from videos like Pa Mac's 51% and a graduation speech you gave. Praise God.

I've been using my granberg small log mill for about 10 years with great success. I finally bought their edging mill about 2 years ago and it's super handy in board making. I've struggled getting wood to dry without alot of warping and distorting, but I've actually made some rather nice farmhouse furniture with it. It's great for rough projects and utilitarian stuff too. Thanks pa mac,and God bless

'Mornin, Pa, I used to have a log splitter but when he went to college I had to actually purchase a gas powered one. Keep up the wonderful videos! Mark

A rip chain is designed to cut faster. I also have a Gransburg chainsaw mill, drawback to these are, waste a lot of material and turn it into dust, other than that, best "portable" sawmill around. Cheers :)

Can you explain what you are using for supports to hold the log in place? I have a mill, and plan on trying it this spring as we take trees down to make room for a barn. I'm only 5'3" but have the log low to work on is hard on the back. Thanks! Stephanie in NH

You bet they do!! Try ripping with a regular chain and you will find the chain binding and cant remove the long strings of wood around the clutch. another site to watch is surviving ringworm - he cuts all his boards with a alaskian mill. I have been sharpening chains for over 50 years and I make and sharpen my own ripping chains.

Personally, I used an electric chain saw, cause otherwise I have a tendency to get gas spills (entirely my fault : ) Could I use these attachments with the electric or do I really need a gas chain saw for these?

what size saw are you using? 24" blade but what size motor would you say is big enough for this sort of work?

I started out milling with an ms310 stihl( 59cc) and it had a 20" bar and chain. It did well on cants 18" and under. I eventually bought a used stihl ms441c ( 72cc) and I could mill lumber up to 26" with its 28" bar. It also did well. I'm using the granberg small log mill which only attaches at the power head end of the bar and leaves the other end open. If you get the one that clamps at both ends of the bar you'll lose about 5" of your cutting ability. That is to say,a 24" bar will only cut about 18 or 19". For longevity sake a pro saw of the 60-70cc class is best for stuff like I mentioned, but a farm and ranch style saw in the 60cc size would serve you well if you're not milling alot. I've done well buying my saws used, but that's just my experience. If you you have any other questions I'd be glad to share what I know. God bless and happy milling
