BEFORE cutting one should always check that (1) the chain brake is functional (2) the chain does not move with the brake disengaged (3) there is oil feeding to the chain and (4) that the off switch cuts power to the saw. Failure to make these checks first could result in a serious injury.

I like to make one cut one the bottom in such case so that the log falls vertically when it ends, instead of rotating around the last piece that still holds.

This video is extremely basic. It is Basic safety and dont discount that. But the truth is that you are rarely going to encounter such convenient cutting situation. Usually you are going have to control where the tree is going to fall, or it is fallen you may have to reach up with a heavy chainsaw. Sometimes you wont know where the potential energy lies, and you will get your bar pinched and you will not be able to easily remove the chainsaw.

Then, it's a good idea to know where to make your cut, not just randomly as in the vid. And make the cut square, to sit it upright on a block to split it.
