I have been carving tikis for about year or so. I have moved from carving tiki faces into palm to carving the whole body out of harder wood (mostly pine or oak) I have seen alot of people do bears. Today I found a ton of pine so tomarrow I think I might take a break from the tiki I am working on to try to do a bear or 2 just for the hell of it.

mountain oyster Thanks...I just make them big and then work them till I like them. They never come out the same and one ear always seems to be lower on one side than the other.

Do I know what a bear looks like? How would you take it. I don't care if it is realistic looking, I think they turn out cute my customers think they turn out cute and they sell like crazy. If you like realistic looking bears do your own video. Carve them your own way. I'll carve mine my way. My guess is you don't even know how to carve.
@GrizAdams1117 жыл бұрын
I use red or white pine but I'm sure there are others that work just as well. I'd say use what is available in your area.

Scott faith one question, how do you make a bear that awesome! I want to get into chainsaw art as a hobby, first got to find a chainsaw haha. Would electric chain saw with a 14 inch blade be okay to use? If you can reply back to me that be cool if not that's cool just want to say keep doing what your doing cause your real good at it. It be cool if you made a bear holding a trout be real cool to see, anyways good luck and happy chainsawing

Scott. I am around 2 years into carving. Your bears look great. Cute bears and carvings in general seem to far outsell the “realistic” ones. Thanks for the videos, always learning from others, thanks for sharing.

Do you use a special bar or chain to prevent kickback? I see you are doing a lot of carving with the tip, and thought that would cause a lot of kickback. Thanks
@GrizAdams1116 жыл бұрын
I haven't watched the video in a while so I don't know what saws I used. But dime tips don't tend to kick back so your can get away with a lot of the no nos. I don't know why. And on a regular bar it's the top of the bar tip that is the danger zone. If you scrape with the bottom of the bar tip your okay.
@mattbehnke7796 жыл бұрын
Scott Longpre thanks, looked like you were using a regular saw. I see a lot it looks like you are using the tip, even the top, such as digging through for the legs. Is kickback severe when carving like this when it does happen, or do you catch it easily? Thanks
@GrizAdams1116 жыл бұрын
Matt if you watch me making a plunge cut you will notice that the handle is lower than the tip so I'm starting the cut using the bottom of the tip and once I get into the wood a bit then I can bring the back end up and start plunging through the wood. Once the whole tip is in the wood it cannot walk up the wood and cause it to kick back. I'm guessing if you were to do a search here on YT you could find a video on how to do a plunge cut. I don't chainsaw carve anymore because it was to hard on my back. But sitting hear thinking about it, I think there are situations were you can get away with using the top of the the tip and that is when your using the side of the chain and scrapping down or sideways and not using full throttle. So its a scrape more than a cut. Please note that I'm going off of my memory so I could be wrong. These are skills you will pick up with practice once you get to know your saw. Just remember you don't always need full throttle and always wear safety gear. I have hit my chaps on more than one occasion. There lots of chainsaw carving events and plenty of chainsaw carvers around. Find a chainsaw carving forum and locate a local carver and watch him or her carve and as questions. They will freely give you carving advice but don't expect any advice about how to make money off of your carving. They don't want you setting up shop down the road from them, but if they are over worked they might sell your carving at there sight for a piece of the action.

Karen VanDerburgh You asked before what I carve them in...Mostly pine.
@karen9369 жыл бұрын
Sorry I asked what you charge>
@GrizAdams1119 жыл бұрын
I don't care that you asked what I charge...I don't chainsaw carve vary often anymore. It's was just to hard on my body. Prices varied depending where I was and how badly I wanted to make some money, and of course how big they were. The general rule was a $100 a foot but That was more than I ever charged. Don't let my physical limitations scare you away from doing it. My problems might not be your problems.

Hello Scott. Is there any way to prevent spliting and big cracks on the logs? Because i know that the center(heart) of the log makes this to happend. Please give me an advice or any idea? Thank you
@GrizAdams1119 жыл бұрын
moldcatalin Sorry don't know of any way...I just make sure and tell every customer to expect it to crack and that that is part of the charm.
