Cute lil bear! Great tutorial too. I haven't tried bears yet, so this is very helpful. What did you seal with before painting? And do you use acrylic or oil paints in your airbrush? I have an airbrush that was given to me, so i just need to learn how to use it, n I'm curious what other carvers are using to paint n finish with. Thanks again for the tutorial, it's easy to follow.👍😊

Thanks for the instructions. I'm trying to make one similar to yours. I'm about 3 hours in and still don't have it blocked out yet. I'm trying to take my time, one wrong move and he'll be missing an ear. 🙂

Great job! Thanks for sharing! What type of wood do you use and do you let it season?

Thank you! This bear is carved from a Maple log but I use a variety of woods. Most commonly I use Maple, Oak, Elm, Cherry, and Pine. Most of the logs I carve are still green. In my experience, it carves much nicer than dry, seasoned wood (especially the hardwoods). Then I seal the carving to control the cracking as it dries.

The Carving Shack Thanks for the response! Do you seal it right away?

Yes the burning helps to dry the surface of the wood so it will absorb the sealer well.

Do you find slicing the back helps it not crack? Can you share a video on that? Maybe helping me understand the whole cracking thing? Thanks 😊

Having a carving bar definitely helps. I am learning on a MS250 with a 12” dime tip Oregon bar. Was around $100 for the bar, new drive sprocket, and 2 loops of chain. Money well spent.
