Explanation of how I know it from my experience.
Operating a chainsaw is dangerous, education and experience can keep you out of harms way.
a professional faller will have to use a chainsaw differently than a weekend wood cutter. If you are a weekend wood cutter, don't tell the professional cutter that what he is doing is wrong, it may be wrong for you, but right for him in that situation/scenario.

Great info. The only days I don’t break the rules are the weekends. Unless I’m working of course.

New "weekend" user here who wants to stay safe. Great tip about "danger zone" and how the saw won't kickback when cutting with the bottom of the bar and the "danger zone" is not touching anything. Thanks for posting.

This was well stated. The true way to mitigate risk is to UNDERSTAND the mechanics of what is going on. The more novice you are, the more stringently you need to cling to these "absolute" rules.. but with experience and knowledge sometimes breaking/bending those rules increases safety. Other times we understand a lesser risk and weigh productivity against it. Being afraid of lightning doesn't mean you dont go outside... the wise simply get good at reading the proverbial weather..

Good info. I just got my first “pro” saw, so I’m trying to learn as much as I can in order to prevent injury. Thanks!

Great video Mitch. Informative. Don't let "those guys" get to you. 👍 With that said, be safe. 😁

Great rant and great reminder! Kickback is also more violent on smaller, higher strung saws. A longer bar gives you more time you to react, more moment arm counteracting kickback forces, and arguably puts the operator farther away from the kickback zone. However, that doesn't negate the dangers of kickback! A lot of weekend sawyers will be cutting with smaller saws that will amplify kick back reaction forces in the first place. You're spot on in stating certain situations are outside the perfect bounds of safety standards. Stay safe!

I'm a freelance climber, I one hand my saws if need be. on a regular basis and like you said know your danger zone. Understand your saw . It should feel like an extension of the cutter,

As a novice "less than weekend warrior" I had always "Heard" of kickback but never experienced it or ever saw it...(no pun intended)...I knew that the "just the tip" was a dangerous spot to hit with blade spinning (Common Sense, and I kept myself aware of it.)....99.9% of my cuts are bucking up, in a downward cut, already fallen (Fell?) trees or limbs and therefore not a problem... Your video shows what I suspected as the "No-Zone" on the tip! - Thank You...

Sometimes comments are a commentary on the commentator...I also used to say those "in the know" recognize those that aren't...Sawdust, chips, and timber on the ground speak...

if people spent as much time cutting as they did reading the first 30 pages of their owners' manual they would understand.

sometimes I use the kickback zone without causing a kickback in order for the saw to push itself thru the cut!! 😮

I think if you dont know about kickback, you should not be anywhere near a chainsaw.
