It's fun watching a framing carpenter learning woodworking. Great attempt on the bucket try. That would be a challenge to almost all of us. That "chatter" from the planer is called snipe. Invest in a Grr-ripper for those fine cuts on the table saw. Push sticks that close are dangerous.

It came out a bit small, but it turned out great! 😁 I learned (the hard way) about compound angles, when I made my first bucket with tapered sides. I was under the impression that you set the miter angle and the bevel angle to what you think they should be, but it didn't even come close to working. 😮 I look forward to seeing your cooper skills grow as you continue your fun series of the 2x4 challenges! I haven't done all of the math, but that 2x4 could have been made into 16 pieces (instead of 12) and with different cuts that would be a larger bucket. Taking all of the staves and running them over a rabbit blade or router table would give you a notch to inset a wooden bottom before gluing. Trim the outside with a band or two of copper flashing.

I am looking forward to the evolution of Ken's Bucket up until it takes on it's final form that only Ken will determine. How far is he willing to take the Bucket development? Will he flame treat the interior like a wooden barrel, will he use water to swell the bucket into a tight seal, will he just settle for a hand carved wooden ladle and give up on the bucket....time will tell.

For a bucket with about a 9" diameter (and 12 staves) you could cut the pieces around 2 3/8" wide. For a 12" wide bucket about 3 1/8" wide (12 staves). In case you want to redo. 😃. I like the tape method. You could use that messed up small bucket 1/2 to hold something on the wall. Just put the shredded part against the wall and no one will see it.
@kenskarpentry2 ай бұрын
Thanks I am going to try again. It was interesting making one

Very nice! The tape technique is very smart. The second bucket can perhaps be salvaged by turning it in a lathe to take just enough from the damaged outer side off - makes a downlight lamp shade or so, mounted inside the roof of the wishing well ;-) just to keep it simple ;-)

I like your singing Ken! Do you want to build a "bucket" instead of snowman? Have you seen Frozen a few times? That's neat that you're building the bucket out of one 2x4 stud and doing it with 12 staves. That's nice that you can use your phone to set the 15 degrees. The bucket did turn out small but it looks nice. Cutting it in half I think will make it look more in proportion to the wishing well. This was fun to watch Ken. Oops, the cut didn't go as planned. Too bad it split the handle. Nice when you got it all put together with the crank, rod, rope, and bucket. Thanks for this video Ken!

There must be some math that would give you the final diameter of a bucket. I never did barrels and buckets but have a deep respect for those who do. Indeed cooperage is a fine practiced art in wood working. Your starter level bucket ended up to be a Norm Abram level build. Maybe you could have consulted with Chad he is good with that fine woodwork stuff. I do have experience in fixing cut problems on different machines. I'm not familiar with that blade "chatter" you have, that you showed after the planner. I suppose it could be a blade lock down problem on the planner. Smaller bites and more times through might help that. I have seen blade wobble on a table saw (where the saw blade resonates with the tooth spacing and cut speed which pushes the blade side to side) and bought blade supports to fix that. This happens in metal but I have never seen it in wood. To tell you the truth your chatter looks like what we called walking. Wood has a tendency to be sticky along the surfaces of the saw deck and guide. This is one of the reasons the high end saws have cast steel tops and not aluminum. You can help prevent this on aluminum with dry lube sprays and use of finger boards while making rip cuts. Though she only made a few photo bombs in the video, I'm sure Kiya was a big help as always. Nice to see the chicks hopping around in the background too. I'm sure you will be glad to get the in the coop this Spring. I hope you had a wonderful Easter and got to see all the friends and family you could.
