Challenge test, or preservative efficacy test (PET test) is one of the tests that cosmetic products placed on the EU market need to undergo. Challenge test is required by the EU cosmetics regulation 1223/2009.
As the name suggests this is a test that is performed to show the efficacy of the preservative system of the cosmetic product. Cosmetic products are firstly artificially infected with various microorganisms, and then the quantity of those microorganisms is monitored over the following 4 weeks.
Products that don't require challenge tests include products that don't contain water, products that contain more than 20% alcohol, products with pH below 3 or above 10, single-use products, or products filled at more than 65 degrees Celsius
