At 720m, Rhinog Fawr is a dinky mountain, but don’t let the height of the Rhinogs fool you - they are some of the wildest, most rugged landscape in the UK. The bad weather and low visibility combined with the difficult terrain made this one of my most challenging trips to date. I just love this place!
A boring but important note on being sensible(ish): these mountains and conditions are challenging and potentially dangerous. It has taken me years to feel confident enough in my abilities and my gear and I still have much to learn, but never intentionally put yourself beyond your personal capabilities. Navigation is essential in these parts, and if you aren't taking a tent, always take some form of bivvy. Always be prepared :)
In the spirit of being prepared, I’ve just ordered some of the waterproof OS Active Maps - my map was getting well scuffed up in the rain
Apologies for the wind noise in this, I was using an external mic with a muff but it got wet and became kinda useless. As you can probably tell, this was another phone jobby as my camera is still being repaired.
I arrived at the Rhinogs with a flat tyre, a huuge thank you to Alan, Lucy, Oscar & Tom for putting my spare on for me despite my locking wheel nut being a wonky pain in the ass, and the guys who lent your pliers to straighten it out, THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH
To see how to set up a tarp tent, check out: • How To set up a Tarp T... . If you need to use rocks, same configuration applies; just place the rocks where you would usually peg, then plonk a few more on for good measure
2 weeks after filming this trip I returned to Rhinog Fawr with ‪@AshOutdoorsUK‬ & found the exact spot that I camped - I’ve added this at the end to show you my pitch in good visibility :)

You're a very adventurous girl!! Brilliant! But please invest in your safety and purchase a personal rescue beacon, they are quite expensive (roughly £250) but if you ever stumbled down a foothole or slipped etc and broke a leg/hip/ankle etc and you can't get mobile phone signal, you risk not being found before succumbing to exposure or injuries. For the sake of £250 it's not worth the risk. Dad talk over, now, go have an amazing life full of adventure and exploration!

Thank you for sharing, most impressive. Awesome camera work, that area is a beautiful part of snowdonia that I've never been to, (not that I can remember lol) but it looks treacherous too

Good advice, defo invest in the rescue beacon. When you are young you feel invincible, but a simple fall as happened could leave you in serious problems. Like insurance you hope you never get to use it, but nothing better to have if you need it.

There is no better feeling them being snug and warm in a bivvy bag inside a tarp or tent and listening to the rain. Pure magic. I have been doing it for 50 years now here in New Zealand and never get tired of it. Great video.

Ive been back to that particular area of the Rhinogydd my entire life, literally. I was carried in a backpack across the entire moutian range probably no more than 1.5 miles east from where you slept in the dead of winter before even being a year old, been going back ever since. A very special place to me.

The Heather and heath adds such a lovely splash of colour in an otherwise wet damp environment, yet even then those mountains are beautiful. Thank you for taking us along this challenging hike. Quite a learning experience. Something to consider for increasing your enjoyment of future hikes is to find a local orienteering club and join it. Benefits include navigation practice, developing an eye for the best routes, managing safe travel through bad terrain, and more. It would also open up more possibilities for hikes that may have been more challenging than your current comfort level tolerates. Take care, WildBeare.

Extremely inspirational, excellent experience from yourself given to the viewers. You explain and name the gear and equipment to give many more confidence to take ourselves away on such beautiful adventures. You show such and so many skills even in the face of adversity, calmness, leadership. Not afraid to show the dangers, boggy ground, slipping, high winds, heavy rain, cold weather to name a few. Like to hear the swear bleeps, shows the reality of a person for me. Love some of the videos that I have started to watch. The quiet open colourful spread of natural beauty in the countryside. Thank you, keep up the fantastic work!

Reminds me of the Billy Connolly monologue about the old songs about skipping through Heather etc, clearly being written by people who had never tried walking through the stuff in their life, easy way to break an ankle or end up knee deep in a bog! If solo trekking, best to stay to the paths and not risk it, the poles help a lot, I wouldnt go up the hills now without them, even if someone is young and fit, they reduce fatigue and reduce the chance of injury, great video.

What I like about her video is the fact that she takes chances on her journey and she keep things natural and simple. She didn't bring a battery generator along and a bunch of unnecessary things. She has alot of courage and brings fun and excitement to her videos.Love the fact when things completely fails she knows when to pack up and go to the car and start over again with a plan.Im watching her play list. The more I watch her the more I appreciate her time letting her viewers know what it's really like to camp alone in the woods, and mountains during the calm and the storm.

I am almost at a loss for words. I say almost because no one who knows me would ever believe I’ve run out of words. LOL. But I am absolutely in awe. The beauty of this landscape is breathtaking. Everywhere you turn, every vignette in this wild area is a picture postcard. I’ve never been to the UK but it is at the top of my list. And the beauty doesn’t end there. The incredible beauty of Claire, only surpassed by her amazing, incredible spirit. She shares her concerns and vulnerabilities - which only add depth to her character - and then makes it clear that she relishes the challenges and is determined to face them head-on and overcome any obstacle. It’s admirable and humbling and inspiring and worthy of poetry. Before this goes total fanboi or becomes a growing thesaurus of superlatives, I will simply say thank you for inviting us along. I wish you the very best of all things wild. Take care lass.
