Chamath on why the government shutdown is basically meaningless

Chamath Palihapitiya runs a fund, Social+Capital Partnership, owns the Golden State Warriors, is a former Facebook exec, and is also extremely outspoken on the future of tech. When he sat down with Jason at LAUNCH Mobile, he called Apple's focus on hardware a "hamster wheel" and "crack" -- once on the wheel/crack, the customer always wants more, but the company can't deliver. He sees Google's focus on huge projects with big potential social impact as the way forward, not least by getting Android OS in the hands of billions of customers worldwide. Plus, why Silicon Valley is the center of power in America and the government shutdown, like the government, is essentially irrelevant. Don't miss this spirited conversation!

Wow!!! This video was created in 2013 and look how Apple's margins have decrease as of 2019 because of the smartphone market slowing down. Everything that Chamath said about Apple has come to fruition. They can only gain about 2% market share in India because their phones are too expensive and Android is winning in emerging markets. The problem is that companies get stuck in their success with high margins and sustaining their current business models. They never prepare for the future in reference to radical innovation. Incremental innovation keeps them on the hamster wheel. If they would have gotten the iPhone into as many people hands as possible, their services revenue would have been bananas! They sacrifice long-term margins for short-term margins. This is the type of investor that I would love to fund my company! He really cares about radical life changing innovation! He really wants to change the world! He offers more than just capital when investing!

You bring up a fantastic point Shawn. People forget they are building for other people and not computers. It becomes a race in the tech world to push the limitations of the system rather than create something that causes a visceral reaction by the part of the customer. Its sort of like when clocks appeared on washing machines because engineers could fit them in. Features and functionality isn't half as important as really understanding who is doing the buying and the story to craft behind it.

Key points from the article that apple does share similarity: Kodak made a classic mistake: it didn’t ask the right question. It focused on selling more products, instead of the business that it was in, sharing memories. The lesson of Kodak’s debacle is that scale does not work as well as it used to. It stifles innovation, and leads to excessive corporate atrophy. Companies, no matter what size they are, should behave like a small company not a bigger one.

You'd only say that Apple's comeback is a valid point if you misunderstood Chamath. Nowhere was he saying that things are set in stone. He is only talking about current trends, based on Apple's spending/strategy. After having a publicity screw up with their maps, they should have bought Waze, but didn't. Dwelling on Apple's post 1997 bounce back (which isn't relevant) means that you aren't really interested in CURRENT STRATEGIC TRENDS but are defending the sustainability of a company you love.

Kodak built a fantastic brand too. In the days of processing film, they were trusted, loved, entrusted with people's memories and controlled the vast majority of the market... but just like Chamath said, they got on the hamster wheel, fell asleep at the wheel, and stopped innovating. Now they are nothing. Consumers truly innovative tech comes along, consumers will ditch brand at the drop of a hat. This is precisely the message.

Just one more comment. I would love so see one about how the lawsuit apple just one against those who violated the patients. Something like how they were a snake in the grass and were planned to shut down other companies and become a monopoly of sorts. And that the 20 software and interface patients were void because these features did exist before apple applied it themselves, and top it off with a gargled fit about how androids are the true pioneers. Keep up the great work!

Daniel they missed the boat on digital, great, thanks for specifying that which does not deny what I said... Now in terms of % of market, well that is not the same as simply establishing a sustainable business, which kodak couldn't do. Apple is doing well off, if you haven't noticed. Comparing to kodak is foolish right now.

I disagree with a lot of what the speaking mentioned, but one point that is amazingly clear is the influence of particular stockholders (aka Carl Icahn) that are distracting the company from its goal of innovation and user experience. Apple didn't get to where it is today by margins alone but by focusing on the overall experience for the consumer that they then could charge a premium.

You're right Silicon Valley is the center of American Power. I'm sure automakers didn't feel that way about Detroit 50 years ago. Its not as if everything from influencing major decisions in other countries, paving your roads, keeping you safe at night to making sure there are no toxins in the water you drink isn't the responsibility of Washington D.C. After all there's probably just an app for that... Or maybe a social networking platform.

Thanks Daniel, good points. I still wouldn't compare Kodak with Apple. Way too soon for that. Product lifecycles my ass. Apple has the luxury to take their sweet time ...nobodys going to ditch em. People are still filled with anticipation. The problem with Kodak wasn't that it stood still while the world turned. Rather, Kodak has spent the past decade attempting to adapt to the changing times, often creating innovative new products, but failing to turn them into a sustainable business.

He never said 'unappealing' except isolating software. He believes phone hardware will become like PC hardware (irrelevant). I don't dispute that Apple probably has the greatest brand of all time. I simply disagree that brand trumps significant disruption when and if that occurs. Google is trying to get ahead of that disruption (they may fail regardless). Apple seems complacent in terms of searching out that disruption (they may succeed regardless). But we're simply looking at trends.

Sorry Shawn. The reason Kodak failed is because they missed the boat on digital. They could have been the sensor that everyone used, they had the resources to invest early. Too late. I think the fact that a Western market like Europe, that was all iPhone is now 70% android suggests consumers aren't loyal. They claim to be, like to think they are, but are not when push comes to shove.
@ShawnDanielsMusic
@ShawnDanielsMusic 10 жыл бұрын
Don't get me wrong, I understand that and it is an interesting point. I was just responding to Chamaths bold claim into how unimaginative and unappealing Apple is to consumers. In comparison to the product failures and success with innovation. Google does not compare with Apple. Apple may have few software related failures (maps and icloud) simply because it is not a great software company, but when it comes to hardware and resonating with consumers, Apple is more powerful then he gives credit

When I said they failed, I was talking about 1997! (not because they are iterating on the mobile industry on which they created) This should be completely obvious if you know anything about Apple. They needed a bailout from Microsoft, and then bounced back to relevancy. Check your history before you attempt to critique my arguments with a presumption of what I mean. goo(.)gl/AJDc

Again, you've misunderstood Chamath's arguments... aswell as misunderstanding bankruptcy. Assets and brands seldom disappear, because after Chapter11, they are repurchased for market value (even though this was less than their debts). However when this is the case, they TEND to cease to remain relevant. This is what Chamath and others mean by failure/lack value/dissapoint etc. The future isn't written in stone. Apple failed (note doesn't mean disappeared!) and cameback before. Discussing TRENDS

I don't think he realizes the fact that apple didn't just build the most valuable company... more importantly, they built a most valuable brand. No tech company resonated so well with the mass market through innovation, cultivating so many loyal consumers. This guy thinks he knows mass consumer market when he really doesn't because hes too caught up in the dam logistics and advancements of tech. Advanced Tech has always been around, whats more difficult is bridging the gap with mass consumers

Apple is the most profitable company in the history of the world and make 90% of all smartphone industry profits today in 2018 while most Android companies lose money. Profits is the main metric that matters if you run a business. Why do you go into business to offer great products and services and make money not lose it.

Apple failed? because they are looking forward rather then iterating on the game changing mobile industry with which they created? I showed you that article as an example to point out how apple is a company that is doing all those lessons of failure right in comparison to other companies right now. Check the key points I replied to you.

This is precisely why Apple is such an unbelievably profitable company to begin with. They were never first to market with any of their products (except the graphical computer interface). They were second with the personal computer, MP3 player, Tablet computer, list goes on. But they focused on people rather than tech. The only major tech company to do so. And had design at the center of their company. And as a result they won. BIG. . .

It's not foolish. I'm not comparing Apple 2013 with Kodak 2013. Clearly a silly analogy. This is about prediction of trends. Has Apple failed right now? Of course not. I'm comparing Apple 2013 with Kodak 1990. Many argued that digital will not take off and that Kodak's market & brand was superior goo(.)gl/qLKnnR. I also had such arguments with photographer friends mid 90s. Or Apple 2013 with IBM 1970... not bankruptcy but not invested in staying relevant.

I want to add one more thing. I love Google also.I don't appreciate this man's perspective of what the future is because it is too self serving.Money for him - that what this is about.Where will the industry and the money be in future for people of America?Will we even be around when this happens?It's about taking care of the people in America.The wealthy don't own us.We are all the future just because we are divine human beings.We are greater than technology.Technology is not greater than us.

Why would we want to be so far advanced beyond where most people can really appreciate? Maybe it's just about the highly intellectual people who are so full of themselves trying to tell us where we need to be. I love Apple. I love their computers. Why do we need to be beyond where our technology is within the computer industry? Who profits from this? Certainly not the common people - the people who are unemployed - the people who are homeless - the people who need help? If this guy was so great - why isn't he giving his Billions to help those in need - because what he cared about was people. He doesn't give a shit about you and me - I'm going to make sure these people get the message.

Thanks for your suggestion - I will look into it when I can. I was having a difficult day the day I wrote this - but sometimes I feel badly about how the wealthy hold on to such an enourmous amount of money and let people suffer unnessarily. There is an article in Vanity Fair Magazine about how a project in San Francisco Bay Area that would help the middle class save themselves from losing their homes and becoming nearly homeless [or homeless] - the project helps people start their own businesses - and the wealthy in that area could have given more to help those who are struggling to stay in their homes and have income. I was very disappointed to learn that they weren't giving enough. The article was about an Interior Designer who helps the ultra wealthy decorate their homes in high end neighborhoods - and then at the end it talks about the fall of the middle class - and that money was needed to help them stay in their homes. Sad - but true. I'm homeless right now and I know I will recover with my own business - and some help from family in California - but what about the people who will be on the street who had owned their own homes and lost them? Heartbreaking. God Bless and thanks for listening.
