Formed in Middleton near Manchester, England in 1981 The Chameleons never quite achieved the success of many of their contemporaries but are arguably just as important. Today the band still has a huge international fan base and it's not surprising. The distinct often melancholy sound is at once abrasive and melodic; their live performances both mesmerising and highly emotional; their stage presence larger than life. In many ways the Chameleons epitomise the northern post punk movement of the eighties, capturing the mood of those bleak times when many industries were in terminal decline and anywhere north of Watford was considered a wasteland. The Chameleons channelled dissolution in to music like nobody else, but somehow managed to create a sound that was uplifting, almost hymn-like.
Live at Camden was shot in 1985 and became a best selling video on its release in the mid eighties. It features a superb performance and includes many of the bands most popular numbers.

I'm repeating sentiment about this fact, but what an incredibly underappreciated group. Their songs have tattooed themselves on me and are unforgettable. Live they lose nothing about their sound, speaking to the mastery of these artists. True marks in time musically.

Listen to a band called The Open from Liverpool area. They made two albums the 1st called "The Silent Hours" and the 2nd namely "Statues." The kind of made it for a little bit but broke up after the 2nd album didn't sell as well. Internal fighting caused them to split. Brilliant band though.

They're more famous now than back then and I'd iimagine their album is selling quite well enough to make them rich enough because of this late interest in the band generated on the net. Again, if you want to be successful in the music industry you have to sell your soul to the devil.

Without a doubt . . . One of the 10 best bands ever . . . The writing is so RELEVANT and INCLUSIVE . . . SCRIPT FROM THE BRIDGE surely one of the best albums ever created, and will not be surpassed. Other material they done is very good but nothing like the SCRIPT. After saying that I still don't understand what those guitars are doing. Will somebody PLEASE describe their sound to me ? Why do they sound so GOOD ? Not only GOOD , but so unique. IT'S IN EVERY SONG. Those GUITARS GROUND the entire experience. The GUITARS are like a CHOIR of human voices. In addition to all the great bands and songs I've heard, and loved, . . . When The Chameleons came along, it was like . . . ' Oh yeah that's the sound that was playing in my head all my life. There are a lot of masterpiece songs and bands . . . I'm not saying The Chameleons are the best but the guitars CHIMING---JANGLING---WALL OF SOUND is the best . . . I M H O.

"Life is an optical illusion, like other optical illusions/beware." So true. One of the best songs about alienation ever written. These guys had perhaps the best guitar sound of all 80's post-punk. So atmospheric. This is some of the best live footage from that era and genre. The Chameleons were such a great band for going so unnoticed by so many people.

They were recognized and are more famous now than ever. the net mus have made them wealthy enough to be able to buy an expensive house and to be able to travel all over the world. Other artist promote them so people then out of interest buy their music online. Just look at how many views their getting for this song alone at 53.000. Some other videos get over a milion views so I'm sure they're pockets are being lined and their popularity has increaced as the best band who didn't become huge. Check out The Open an amazing band who didn't really make it huge. Two albums "The Silent Hours and Statues."

Seen a mosh pit on you tube from 2019 with so many bald heads and old blokes ,it was on fire for second skin ,this crowd were ethier amazed and dumb struck or dead inside and they were the youth of the day ,unreal..

Chameleons and Pixies are my favorite bands from the 80's and pretty much my favorite bands of all time. Theres a lot of good stuff from the 80's though

this chorus and driving guitar sound in the second and third hookline from 2:51 on sounds so brutal like evanescence and resignation that i want to sigh and cry at the same time like it's all wrong and false but there ist nothing you can do to change no matter what.
