Here's my review of the Champion 100520 Inverter Generator. I bought this generator as a cheaper alternative to a permanent standby generator unit for backup power for the house. Being an inverter generator, it is safer for sensitive electronics than standard generators. With almost all appliances having computer controlled chips, having a unit like this is more critical than ever when using it as a whole house backup generator to prevent from damaging control boards on your washer, refrigerator, or HVAC system, not to mention your TVs and computers.

Great presentation. If I could add: my lock out installer guy feels it’s just a little safer to plug your cable in the generator and home before you start it. That way you aren’t making connections while you have power going out. (Also, when you kill main power, kill all other breakers as well; bringing them online one at a time after lock out, generator first.) You are still protected prior to lock out with the generator breaker prior to switching. I personally don’t have much knowledge regarding the floating ground… must investigate!

That's awesome that you got a similar setup! Yeah, I'm in the same boat for facing issues with setup. One of the biggest reasons why I have been so slow to set everything up has been the cost of all these items. If you are facing a choice between running a long electric wire or a long gas hose, I'll let you know after doing the research, a long electric wire is cheaper than a long gas hose. If you want to run on natural gas, you'll need a 3/4 inch gas hose/pipe. For a 70 ft run, you're looking at $400-500 with today's prices. A 70 ft 10 gauge cable nema L14-30 can be for approximately $160 (amzn.to/3vFhl6Q). My electric and gas are right next to each other, but are in the front of the house and it feels too conspicuous to be running everything in the front. I have to run a 70ft electric wire and a 70ft gas hose (not ideal)... I have been waiting for sales or for ebay to get the gas hose for cheap. I hopefully will get the gas hose soon and have it setup with natural gas. I posted a video a few weeks ago adding the motor snorkel and having the generator work on propane. Thanks for commenting!

Great video. I’ve had the same generator for 3 years now. I also have the Sense and wired it up the same way you did. It’s very convenient to measure how much wattage you’re using with the generator and it is what I used to size my generator. I also have the USC motor snorkel. I haven’t installed that yet. Just got a new central AC, so I’m going to see if it starts up without a soft start kit. Wish me luck!

In case anyone gets the latest model, I just received the same unit (100520) this week and they moved that neutral to ground jumper to a spot on the bottom of the panel in between the two GFCI outlets. It took me a while to find it and I almost called Champion tech support. I'm not sure why Champion moved it from an easy access spot on side of the panel to a much more difficult access location on the bottom of the panel. You have to lay on your back while looking up to access it. Once you look up in between the GFCI outlets you can clearly see a neutral jumper on a ground, similar to way it's bolted together in this video except in a different spot. After disconnecting the neutral jumper to the ground, my GFCI outlets still function as GFCI outlets with green lights which is a bit puzzling since I thought I read somewhere that you lose GFCI function when you float the neutral. Maybe Champion resolved that issue?

I had ordered one of the motor snorkel kits and cancelled it before it even shipped (two days later). I read about the power loss and the reason I bought this genny, to replace my old Harbor Freight non-inverter 6500/5500 was because I needed clean power and more power. Running on NatGas would reduce the power by 16%-20%. Based on the fact that you can't change the engine compression to make NG more efficient, and the fact that our power is never out more than 4-6 hours at the most, I will just stick with gasoline..
@jonathanDIYs
@jonathanDIYs Жыл бұрын
Do note that even with a motor snorkel, you can still run on gasoline. I wanted to have the flexibility of tri-fuel (gas/propane/natural gas). Having flexibility is useful during emergencies. The 2021 Texas winter storm power outage left me without power for almost 30 hours and I want as many options as possible. The 20% reduced power would definitely work for me in the winter since my heat isn't electric. Whatever works for you though - thanks for commenting and best wishes to your setup!

From the motor snorkel web site: "People often ask about power loss with the adapter style kits. We have never had a complaint about power loss with any of our kits." Hard to tell if that's a marketing ploy or not, but most all manufacturers (Champion included) state lower power outputs on propane/natural gas vs. gasoline in their dual or trifuel gennies.

DO YOU THINK THIS WLL WORK ? If I got an extra L-14-30P plug (like the one on the house to generator cable). I connected the plug’s ground pin to its neutral pin and labeled it “neutral bonding plug”. If I want to use the generator to run power tools via a standard extension cord, I insert the bonding plug and then connect the extension cord to one of the 120V GFCI outlets. The generator is now “bonded neutral” and safe to use with the power tools. If I want to power the house panel, then I have to remove the bonding plug in order to connect the cable from the house and the generator becomes “floating neutral” with the only neutral to ground bond taking place in the house electrical panel as it should.
@jonathanDIYs
@jonathanDIYs Жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, yes - that would definitely work. In fact, they sell products like that for the regular 15 and 20 amp sockets (www.amazon.com/Hughes-Autoformers-Ground-Neutral-Watchdog/dp/B08HZGMRB1/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=generator+bonding+plug&qid=1668892523&sr=8-1). I've never heard about it done with a 14-30, but I don't see why you couldn't do the same thing. Electrically, the ground plugs on all the outlets is connected together and connected to the chassis and the neutral plugs are also all connected together. Just make sure to double check all your electrical work with a meter and don't get the wrong pins connected. Make sure you do not leave the hot leads exposed in any way and that the connection cannot come apart if someone brushed up or bumped into it.

@jonathanDIYs
@jonathanDIYs 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it cuts the bond for all the outlets. Yes, you definitely want the ground and neutral bonded for camping or using solo. Having the ground disconnected can be dangerous in the event of the live wire fraying and energizing a metal container. With the neutral and ground connected, it would immediately short and trip the breaker, while without the connection, you can become part of completing the circuit when you touch it getting a shock.

I got my answers below. Does the generator's ground should be connected to grounding rod in permanent house connection with floating ground setup?
@jonathanDIYs
@jonathanDIYs Жыл бұрын
@@StagArmslower no, the house grounding rods already provide the ground connection in a permanent house connection. As far as I understand electricity and from my research, connecting the generator's ground is more necessary when the generator is being used as an isolated system. The rationale is that in the event of a lightning strike on the exposed metal generator frame or any exposed metal appliance plugged into an outlet in the house, the permanent house connection already has a path to travel to earth through the house ground rods. If lightning were to strike a generator only system, a person could be the lowest path of impedance for the lightning to go to ground because there is no direct path to earth. This is my understanding to why it is critical to have a ground rod when using the generator by itself. Do note, I'm not an electrician, please take my advice with a grain of salt.

First timer question here. I have the L14-30 plug on my house and this will be my first generator. Do I have to make it a floating neutral generator to power the house or should I try it first as bonded to see if it trips and if it does then convert it?
@jonathanDIYs
@jonathanDIYs 2 жыл бұрын
You can run this with bonded neutral with no regular issue. The point of making it floating neutral is to make it safe when there is a fault situation. The basic rule is that you want electricity to only have one path to go through. When it is bonded at the house main breaker box and your generator, it means that in certain short situations, power can still flow without tripping the breaker properly. The rule basically is, running generator by itself, you need it to be bonded neutral. Running generator connected to house which already has bonded neutral, you need the generator to be floating neutral. For testing however, running it either way will work. Just make sure to have it the right way for each application for maximum safety when you are regularly using it.

There is a lot of research you can do on this. I found this guy's video the most helpful - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rM9-jblh0d-2hoU.html. The TLDR is you only one the neutral bonded with the grounds in 1 place to have only 1 path for the electricity to flow in the event of a fault. More likely than not, the 2 breakers you are flipping is only transferring the hot over to your generator and not disconnecting the ground or the neutral connections. If you run your generator on this system, you will now have 2 areas that are bonded - 1 at the main panel and 1 at your generator. This is not ideal in the event of a fault. Watch the video, the person does a much better job explaining it than I can. For reference, you can also look up NEC250.30A... up.codes/s/grounding-separately-derived-alternating-current-systems

Hi Randall, I don't think the L14-30R can be easily replaced by an L14-50P. The L14-30R is smaller than the L14-50P so you'd probably need to widen the hole on the front panel if you really wanted to do it. Additionally, generators generally use 14-50R receptacles instead of the locking ones. I don't know why, but this seems to be the standard. I would just recommend the adapter.

@@randallsemrau6911 Sure, I totally think it would be possible. You'll probably void any warranty on the generator by doing so though. You'll probably want to keep the parts list and wiring diagram handy when doing this - www.championpowerequipment.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/100520-EPL-English_After-21MAR1700224.pdf. @@randallsemrau6911 those plugs are designed to withstand the vibrations. On the locking end, it won't come out and on the other end - the 4 prong takes quite a bit of force to push in and out (note the 4 finger grip). Unless you pull it in and out hundreds of times, I don't see it getting loose. Also, if you keep the 4 prong side attached to your cord for connecting to the house, you'll never have to take that side off. The whole setup is outdoor rated - this is similar to what they use to connect RV to power station at RV parks and those are out in the rain, heat and bad weather conditions. Watch kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rM9-jblh0d-2hoU.html. You only want your neutral and ground bonded together at 1 source. If you have multiple bonded connections such as in your main power panel and your generator, there are scenarios were a short can travel on both the neutral and ground and fail to trip the circuit breaker leading to a dangerous scenario. The simple rule - you want your generator to have neutral and ground bonded when it is running a device independently. When you are running a house through a main panel, you want the neutral and ground separated.

@Jonathan Chan Yes my gen does show the colts and hertz, albeit 62hz?? Thanks for that info on the rpm, I'll try and find that plug thing then. That should have me set. We drop to 31 in a few days so I need to crank it to finish that breakin oil 5hrs and get ready for that what if. Appreciate your input.

@jonathanDIYs Жыл бұрын
@@semlohde1 if you're running a regular generator and not an inverter generator, the RPM of the engines directly affect the hertz. You may need to tune your engine to spin slower if you want exact 60.

after 2 years later are you happy with buying this? Thanks

@jonathanDIYs 8 ай бұрын
Yes! It has been great. I've needed to clean the carb out once (but that's probably my fault for not emptying the fuel completely or using it regularly). I have full confidence in being able to get the generator fired up in an emergency and very happy that I paid a fraction of the price of a full standby unit. It is able to keep most of my appliances running in the house, I think this is the ideal sized generator for my needs.

This model is identical to the Predator inverter of the same wattage. I bet the same Chinese company makes both.

My original statement below is incorrect. Near where the oil dipstick is the green grounding wire where you can change the floating by vs bonded neutral without taking the front plate off.

I checked it out today - that is the connection to the frame and to attach a grounding wire. You definitely don't want to disconnect that. Even if you do, the ground and neutral remain bonded. The white and the green/yellow cable has to be disconnected otherwise the bond remains.

@@jonathanDIYs Hi Jonathan, so you are confirming (don't) disconnect that connection to the frame, and still go with the white wire disconnect behind the panel correct? Sorry just working on this today, and don't want to screw it up, great video man!

Yes, the only way to unbond the neutral from the ground is to do it inside the panel. Best wishes for getting everything setup! :)

Get your neighbors to buy the same or similar system or you'll be a target in an extended blackout when everyone starts to eat each other.

@jonathanDIYs Жыл бұрын
😂 I'm the poor guy in the neighborhood (but probably a bigger target?), I know there's a few neighbors with solar and battery that never have power outages and a few neighbors with standby automatic transfer generators. Their systems are definitely more expensive, but people might target me because mine is a portable system. 🤷‍♂️ Definitely hope I never am in a situation where people start to eat each other. Sounds scary.

@@jonathanDIYs I'm being somewhat humorous. Thanks for responding. Heard some guy talk about how someone took an old lawnmower and left it running near a generator he had his eye on and exchanged the old mower for the nice generator and its owner couldn't figure out why his power disappeared yet he could still hear that his generator was running. There are always creeps who would take advantage of those with ingenuity and who plan for potential problems. Your analysis of that generator, which was one I am considering, was very good.

@@jonathanDIYs I'm trying to decide between the 100520 and the 100519. What is the realist running time for the 10520 is running two regular size refrigerators, a single tv, and some led lights?
@jonathanDIYs
@jonathanDIYs Жыл бұрын
@@spacecoastz4026 Probably around 8-10 hours. If your load is that light, the 100519 will be the more efficient generator for you. I only bought something this big to run the whole house. Smaller generators generally use less gas than bigger ones. I think with the 100519, you might be looking at 10-13 hours.

@@jonathanDIYs Yeah, I have a 4-ton Diakin two-speed compressor with variable speed air handler. No easy start and my A/C dealer (which I have a warranty with) seems to be negative about trying to use a generator to run it. My water heater used 4,500 watts, so I assume the 100519 would run it if needed. Do you think I need to keep the two refrig on different legs of power if I have the 100519?
@jonathanDIYs
@jonathanDIYs Жыл бұрын
@@spacecoastz4026 Is the Daikin compressor a 3 phase unit? I would also not be too sure if it would be compatible with running on a generator as the generator only produces single phase... there even is a big warning in the manual "DO NOT connect 3-phase loads to the generator." Anyways, for your refrigerators, you probably could keep them on the same leg of power. Each leg is protected by a 20 amp breaker which is probably the same as you have for your house breakers. If they work on 1 breaker now, they should also work on 1 leg on the generator.

Yeah, it probably is like that because of the open frame design. Closed frame generators provide quite a bit of extra dampening.

Did you insert oil fill funnel from front or side? I did side and it’s hard to actuallly get the tube in there.
@jonathanDIYs
@jonathanDIYs Жыл бұрын
I did it from the side the exhaust is coming out from. I don't think I used the funnel and tube that came with the generator. I have a flexible metal funnel (something like this one amzn.to/3T5niF1) which helped a little. You need something long enough to clear the generator so you can easily pour it in.
