The manufacture of Hysil branded laboratory glass by Chance Brothers and Co Limited at their Spon Lane works in Smethwick.
We see the processes involved in the manufacture of Hysil glass beginning with the mixing of materials. We then see views of the furnaces and glass being blown into moulds. Cathode ray tubes for use in televisions are hand-blown but compressed air is used to blow larger shapes such as those required for street lamps. We also see the production of cylinder glass. We then see the process of annealing the glass to make it heat resistant and finally there are shots of testing and the packaging and despatch areas.
