For about 150 years the Smethwick Company of Chance Brothers was one of the most important and innovative pioneers of glassmaking in the world.
Such was its importance Chance Brothers was rightly called "The greatest glass manufacturer in Britain."
In 1851 the company produced the glazing for the Crystal Palace which housed the Great Exhibition as well as providing the opal glass for the four faces of the Westminster Clock Tower housing Big Ben.
At about this time, Chance Brothers became the most important engineer of the lighthouses which were built around Britain and throughout the British Empire. Today these lighthouses remain a famous part of seascapes all over the world.
In this short programme, Dr Malcolm Dick, Editor in chief of History West Midlands discusses the growth, achievements and decline of one of the Black Country's most important manufacturers.

+gf1001 are they still around to tell the tale of Chance Brothers? I'm searching for people who worked for Chance as part of a Heritage Lottery project.

+gf1001 Hello There, I hope you are well. I'm sorry for your loss. Any names that you know or contacts would be really valuable. I'm collecting oral histories, it's often too late to speak to people or find them...I wish I had recorded my grandfathers story and others. For more information see below. It would be really nice to get a perspective from someone like you...from a child's perspective when you were younger. Would you be up for that? Keep in touch if you have anything, there may be people who knew your family, who knows. It's a long shot I know. Hello - I'm making a short (non- profit) video about the 'Martian Lighthouse' that Chance Bros were commissioned to design for Harry Price back in 1929 and was wondering if I might use a few credited clips from this video?
