Hi there and thank you for watching. Today's video is all about the Chanel classic flap and the strap length, mine is the medium classic flap in the black caviar with silver hardware. A beautiful, classic bag, but the strap length was too short for me and too short to wear comfortably cross body. After some soul searching, i decided to send the bag to leather surgeons in New York to have the strap lengthened. I was more than a little nervous to cut open and alter this classic bag, but ultimately, i much prefer to wear my bags cross body and therefore decided to lengthen the strap to approximately 22 inches. This was not gifted and not sponsored, the alteration was paid for with my own money.

I just had my vintage 1 series chevron medium flap chain extended by Leather Surgeons and it was done flawlessly! It took me quite some time to locate what was altered, and only because I could see a tiny space in the chain upon close inspection. It is a total game changer, I ADORE my bag now that I can wear it crossbody. It’s the perfect size for wearing this way!

great video!! especially because its pretty much the only one where somebody talkes deeply about that topic and share experience! i have done prreety much the same with my newest chanel :) i bought a chanel east west flap bag a few weeks ago (the one with the 4 holes where you can adjust the chain as alonger or double chained shoulder bag) in a amazing patchwork lettering fabric design i immediately fell in love with-only issue was that its about 10cm to short for me to wear crossbody so i bought a strap with the mathing leather color on etsy (wich is seriously ammazing quality) and brought the bag and strap to a leather worker and got it extended with a piece of the new strap. the company also worked a bit on the leather from the new strap making it a bit used so it 100% matches the original one so its not looking brand new against the already used one and it turns out PERFECTLY! and when i ever decide to sell the bag the strap puece can easily be removed again making the bag like it was before. i seriously couldnt be happier with the result and that it can be changed back to how it was before and the entire thing only cost me 150€ for the service 🥰

That is the one thing that kept me from buying a classic flap is the length of the strap! Now you have done that I am definitely going to have to do that when I buy one! And the purse looks great on your cross body! Congrat!!

I sent my Chanel beige lambskin vintage bag over from the UK to Gerry at leather surgeons too. It was completely dirty and had lost its shape too. He brought it back to life and it looks incredible now. It was well worth the money to send it over to them as I had researched who to do it, and it was always leather surgeons getting the best reviews. Super nice to communicate with via email too and they explained everything really well. Glad you love your Chanel bag even more now! 😊💕

I haven't regretted it but be sure before you do! They can always take it out of you change your mind but it's not for everyone to change the length 💕

Leather surgeons shortened my chain on my Chanel medium classic flap in jersey about 2 years ago and love it. Enjoy!😘 He replaced my chain and gave me the old one back to keep in case I ever resell it or change my mind.

hellocatwalkcity bought a mini rectangular flap on Fashionphile and found out that it had been lengthened and found the original owner and they said it was leather surgeons. It was a raspberry mini if you want to see the video. It shows leather surgeons color matching. It was close to the original color but still different enough to be slightly noticeable.

This is such a wonderful idea. I had never even considered it! I sold two of my classic flaps because the length makes it so impractical and I hate feeling it on my shoulder sliding off. My 2.55 has a longer chain and is perfect. I think I might bite the bullet and get my classic tweed lengthened as it will definitely make it wearable. No doubt I will ponder all these questions you have…. Thanks

Oh my gosh I loveeee that you did this!! It looks amazing cross body on you! I think I would still be worried about doing this but I have zero good reasons why hahaha!! I’m so glad you have zero regrets. I agree black bag is definitely the right colour to do this on. Also Gerry is THE BEST ❤️❤️. Hello catwalk bought a square mini from FASHIONPHILE with a strap that was lengthened and when she wanted it shortened, he said they would have to cut a bit of the original leather to make it look perfect so there is permanent damage technically if you want to reverse it but not an issue ofc if you’re keeping it! This is so helpful! I reached out to the leather surgeons to get my classic flap strap extended as well. How tall are you? I’m thinking of extending it about 22inch as well. I’m 5’5. Do you know if by extending the strap, it loses its value? Great video, as always 💕

I'm only 5.1, I probably could have gotten away with slightly shorter. It might, people may not like the idea a classic has been altered. I would be sure you have no intention of selling in the foreseeable before doing it 💕

Oooooooh, I think you might have spurred me to do the same with my medium classic flap. I’m short and curvy and it hits far too close under my arm and I hate carrying it on one shoulder with the long chain. Would also be sending from Ireland so reassuring it can be done!! I do believe if you buy a Chanel Classic flapbag in a size medium or jumbo ( the small size and Mini size are more affordable) it is such an expensive bag that it really is a bag to be used for many years and perhaps a lifetime. It is a bag that needs to be looked after and used with respect ( not baby it as such but ) if you want it to stay looking nice. Because it is a Classic bag it is a timeless design that stands the test of time, but there are days when this bag can seem a bit unfunky and serious. If one can get over those days, the bag will be a bag that one will turn to for many different occasions. I do love my Chanel Classic bag and if one wants to buy just one luxury bag, ( many people will say that one bag is never going to be enough) this bag is one to consider. Then the price for one bag seems obtainable.

Omg I’m going to do this!! I love mine but don’t really wear it because I don’t like the strap length. I’ve always wished the strap was exactly the same length as my jumbo as I’m curvy/busty. It’s great to see how it looks. Do they use real Chanel parts? I’d worry if not as the hardware might wear differently over time. Thanks for this video!

I actually don’t know to be honest, but it wouldn’t have made me decide not to, it’s such a game changer for the bag, they do a lot of work in vintage Chanel which would give me comfort in what they use 💕

Claire at the handbag restoration company is amazing. She’s in the UK and I know of lots of people who have used her to extend chain straps. Just use a chain clip on the woc. Are Chanel like LV- will they refuse future repairs as you have customised it?

I've no idea, but even if they do, it was still worth it for me with how much more I've been able to use it, it won't be for everyone for sure. And thank you, I'll check them out! 💕

@@ameliarosescloset I agree! I’m sending my LV Thames to her to have the short strap placed on clips- so I can use my long DE strap on it. That way my daughter and I can both use it as a cross-body as well. I’ve also converted two mm looping bags with D rings ( mono for my daughter, DE for me). Luckily with those two I can easily slip the original straps back on if necessary . I’d much rather change a bag slightly and use it loads, I absolutely agree with you. I wouid trust Claire with a repair to any of my bags in any case,and her charges are really reasonable, as well. HRC is the only company out of all the UK ones I would trust ( except Lincs repair for leather jackets, settees, car seats etc) .
