China's Chang'e 6 is now back on terra firma with the first ever rock samples taken from the dark side of the moon. As well as Chinese technology, the mission involved cooperation with scientists from France, Sweden, Italy and the European Space Agency. So what does this mean for future lunar missions, and further international cooperation in space?
To find out, in this episode of The Agenda, Juliet Mann speaks to Andrew Coates, Professor of Physics in the Department of Space and Climate Physics at UCL, Clive Neal, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at Notre Dame and, to get a view from someone who’s actually been into orbit above the earth, Yi So-yeon, South Korea's first astronaut.

China's Chang'e moon missions has landed on both near-side and far-side of the moon (first time in human history on earth), collected rock samples and successfully brought them back to earth ...

Yes, it is correct. The Chang'e 4 and 6 landed on the far side of the Moon. Chang'e 5 landed on the near side of the Moon. The near side is the side of the Moon always facing Earth. Because of her unique geosynchronous rotation, the far side of the Moon is permanently on the far side. I do not know if this geosynchronous rotation also applies to other moons and planets in our solar system, or this is a rare unique rotation. Thank you.

The concept of the "Dark Side of the Moon" is ridiculous. All sides of the Moon get daylight. It's the "Far Side of the Moon". The reason why it's the Far Side of the Moon is that we never get to see it from Earth. The Moon's orbit around Earth, and its Rotation on its axis synchronise to the point that the same side of the Moon is always facing Earth.
@hengng4414

Spot on. The earth and the moon rotates on its axes. The Lunar rotation is unique. It is a synchronous rotation. Together, planets Earth and Moon rotate around the sun. As you described, from planet Earth, we do not see the far side of the Moon. Again, because of this synchrony. For decades, no man or modules have landed on the far side of the Moon. Chang'e 4 was the first attempt by Chinese scientists to land on the far side. It was a calculated risk, hit or miss attempt. For the last few minutes towards touchdown, the Chang'e 4 was on AI and robotic mode, with loads of luck. Fortunately, Chang'e 4 was lucky. For Chang'e 6,Chinese scientists launched a rely satellite Queqiao 2 sat, to assist the Chang'e 6 in the final touchdowns. This time, Chang'e 6 had constant radio contacts with Beijing. At final touchdowns, rock sampling rover, retrieve, broadcasts, and final ascent, homeward bound. With much luck, it was successful and Chang'e 6 landed in China safely this week. All these space technologies are indigenous, with some international partners participating. Pakistan, France and Italy had some space devices on board the Chang'e 6.The USA and NASA cannot collaborate in all Chinese space missions, lunar rocks, and data sharing because of the Wolf Amendment. China reinvented the wheel and retrieved rock samples from the South Pole Aitken Basin on the far side. Thank you.

The race between the Soviet Union and the US was more about "bragging rights" for who being the first. Once the thrill of a brag is done and dusted, there is no longer any thrill to be gained. Now the US finds itself lacking as depicted by the repeated failure to launch the Artemis, and now the two stranded astronauts in the ISS. What the latest problems NASA faced is the lack of vigorous testing and quality control. One would think that the repeated leaking in the Artemis was enough to spur on engineers to double and treble checks on the Boeing rockets. Now they are trying to fix the leaks a long way from earth, and have two lives dependent on a successful return rocket ! The US had barred China in the past space ventures, thinking that in doing so, it would deprive China of any means to go it alone, and hence forever be playing catch-up. That kind of mentality also reflected in US politics and trades. Someone likened it to the "Tanya Harding" saga when she wanted her rival Nancy Kerrigan to suffer some form of psychological trauma before the big race. But it backfired on Tanya Harding badly. How about the comparison between the story "The hare and the turtle ?"

Helium 3! Helium 3 is the clean version of Nuclear Powered Reactors. Same power, same length of existence, but ... no Nuclear wastes. Helium 3 burns up rapidly when entering the Earth's atmosphere, so we have very little of it. But ... if we can bring Rocket Containments of it back to Earth, then you have abundance of energy and the country will become exceptionally wealthy.

When in the middle position (between sun and earth), the "far side of the moon from earth", is bright because get "sun ray". So, the moon itself, always have the "daylight", i.e. the "far side" from the earth.

China won't share any research findings. I respectively disagree with your opinions. The US Wolf Amendment forbids America from collaborating with China. Many international partners have been invited to participate in lunar missions Chang'e 4,5 6 and 7 next year. These countries are Pakistan France and Italy. The US has to repeal the Wolf Amendment and renegotiate with Beijing. And Beijing may still say No. Thank you.
