How to change the battery on a 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe. Simple jobs don't always go according to plan.
Edit: 10-16-2023 - As several have pointed out, it is not necessary to take the cable assembly apart as I do. I was figuring this out as I went. The assembly can be slid off to the side as shown in this video below:

Thank you. Especially grateful that you made a mistake and showed how you remedied that. GM engineered that to build it, not to maintain it. All the manufacturers do things like that which make us ask Why?

FYI - You do NOT need to remove the wires from the buss plate. It lifts off and rotates out of the way with all wires attached.

You might be right. I was figuring it out as I went. No doubt I’ll have another opportunity to replace it before trading it off. I’ll to leave those on the buss plate in place. Thanks for watching!

I actually was going to say the same thing as well, all those cables could of stayed on. he just had to lift the entire cover and you can still remove/install the battery with out having to disconnect any of the top cables.

Great walk through and also the best tip I can give to anyone about to do this is to make sure to remove that bolt on the reservoir right next to the battery. That little bit of wiggle room makes a world of difference when pulling the battery out and getting it back in.

When you programmed the windows as it asked. Did you use the driver door window control only, or did you go door to door to make sure they all were controlled by each doors window switch?
@LivingCommonSense
@LivingCommonSense Жыл бұрын
@Andy - I only used the driver door controls. I recall only operating the driver window. I didn't expect to have to roll down a window to complete the battery replacement process. I just followed the instruction on the dash and it only instructed to operate the driver's window.

I have a 2018 Tahoe with the same exact battery setup, My battery died today so I got a jump and went to Autozone and they said I shouldn't replace it on my own because when I disconnect the other leads for the computer. I'll mess up the diagnostics for the CPU. Did you notice any difference in settings when you connected the new battery?
@LivingCommonSense
@LivingCommonSense Жыл бұрын
@dhov21 - I didn't notice any except after I connected the new battery, a message on the dash cluster said to roll down the driver side window (at startup) which I did. I rolled it up and my wife has been driving it ever since with no problems. I've only done this type one time but no problems. Did they want to change the battery for you or did they say take it to GM?

Do you have to program it so that it knows it has a new battery?
@LivingCommonSense
@LivingCommonSense Жыл бұрын
@Jose - I did not have to program anything after I put the new battery in but be aware the battery I took out was not completely dead. That being said, you'll notice at 12:55 shortly after I started on the new battery and after then "hood open" message on the dash, you'll see another message popped up instructing me to "Open Then Close Driver Window". I rolled the driver side window down and back up but I have no idea what that accomplished. Since then though, that message nor any other out of ordinary messages have popped up in the dash.

I don’t know why they make it so much harder than it needs to be with the open space up front. My 2000 Tahoe just need a screwdriver and 5 min to change. This took me almost an hour. Even the headlight bulbs are harder to get to. Such a PITA for what should take a few minutes.
@LivingCommonSense
@LivingCommonSense 5 ай бұрын
@Weepninnybong - Yep, I think their whole point is to discourage the owner from doing self repair. Small incremental changes over the years add up to eventually only the dealer can crack open the hood. Your user name....from the original Transformers movie?

@@LivingCommonSense My 2019 has the primary battery on the passenger side and it is quite a production to swap out. Anyone know about that?
@LivingCommonSense
@LivingCommonSense 9 ай бұрын
@barrybrinkman4961 - I suppose its possible but I'm not familiar with it. GM used to put two batteries on their trucks back in the 6.2L and 6.5L diesel days. I'm not sure why the location is their. I built a toolbox to go there from my 98' 1/2 ton gasser. I thought about putting something on the Tahoe...12v tire pump, patch kit, tow strap or jumper cables...I had not considered adding a second battery.
