In late January 2023, I decided to lean in and devote my time, talent and treasure to this KZfaq channel, just to see what happened. A year later, the numbers are in and we'll take a look at them together in this video. I also feel the need to bring some much-needed change to the channel and we'll discuss that as well. A big "thank you" to all who have liked, subscribed, shared, and commented on the videos. You folks are the ones who've made this a real pleasure.
I explore, review and rate bike trails on this channel...and hopefully find a little joy in the journey. Thanks for watching!

Looking forward to your videos throughout 2024. The videography is top notch and the narration is entertaining. I also enjoy the information about the towns you are riding through. I would like to see you eat a meal at a unique restaurant at each location. You don't need to 'overdo' it with the production... introduction, some information about the trail and the town, a bike ride, a meal and some final thoughts. Looking forward to them!

Thank you for this State of the Channel address. My husband and I love Greenville and The Swamp Rabbit Trail. So fun, the way you film it looks just as inviting as being there. We ride electric bikes. Not sure that is your thing, we have talked about upgrading our bikes. Would love a video on that topic, expecially for women. Also the way you video and what you use and why would to create your content would also be extremely interesting. From equipment you use, to technology/editing. The change sounds good for you. Wish you well in the new formatting of your channel!

I think it was a part 1...so that means there's gonna be a series! Yeah, about shorts...I think most people who watch them are just doing some mindless scrolling...so it's usually of little benefit to us long-formers. And how much in-depth information can you really convey in just :30 or :50? Not a lot. I think YT just panicked because of TikTok. Oh well...

Ok Scott, first of all your video shots are truly amazing. Your photography & editing skills are second to none. Second of all your personality is what makes your videos even more compelling. The new ideas you presented should work for those of us who have subscribed to your channel. You may also want to connect with the local bike clubs to get a small group ride together. Don't forget that people have to first find your channel (like I just recently did) & start to tune in by typing in the search or favorites (subscribed channels). Another thing to consider is when you retire & have more time to devote to KZfaq most of us will still be here to watch. Where I'm at in Wake County, N.C. most people (as far as I know) ride on the trails because the streets are not bike-friendly. Your videos have inspired me to plan to visit some of the trails you have made videos about. So hang tight Scott we have your back!!

Scott, at the very least, set up AMZ links for your camera gear and accessories and put a plug in your videos to check out the info in your description below the video. It doesn’t matter how many subscribers you have. It’s a nice bonus and accumulates over time (older videos bring current revenue.) Plus, write off ALL of your expenses as a business. I've been along on your rides, following along, and looking forward to your next trail review since the middle of last year. You always do a great job Scott. I am not surprised you’re feeling a bit burnt out. Very obviously, you spend a tremendous amount of time on these videos. The one thing I have always tried to remember is that doing these videos is to get me away from work not into it. Someone asked me one time about the editing, and I told them I really did not like doing editing. That’s actually not true. I do like editing the videos. What I do not like doing is editing our rides. With that in mind, you might want to just take a ride and do as you said, turn on the record button to a mounted camera or two, and see what you can do with it later. But while you are there, just enjoy the ride. Of course, that would be depending on the joy that you get out of each aspect. If you like going over the same bridge four times, go over it five or six times. In other words cut the parts you do not like and expand the parts you do like. You know we will be following along whatever you decide. After all, we need a guided tour of that swamp rabbit trail at some point. Stay safe and stay in peace friend.

I became a subscriber after the Virginia creeper trail video and have loved watching your videos ever since..your video styling has a relaxing vibe to it and your commentary/sense of humor just makes it fun to watch. In terms of suggestions, I think someone already mentioned Patreon/YT membership which is worth trying - even starting out with $1-2 monthly membership from few hundred subsribers could help you with some expenses. I think collaborating with other biking channels could also help cross-pollinate subsribers. You could also send out a call for a collective subscriber trail event for popular trails (I'd be down for Virginia Creeper in the Fall personally :)) that might help grow the channel! The things we really enjoy about your channel: Consistent: as you address what we can expect before the ride everytime Ride itself: LOVE that we are NOT going on a blow by blow 32 mile ride with you - every single minute.....ugh! We like your recap as you are riding. For me & my husband, it gives us an overview of the trail and what to expect. LENGTH OF THE VIDEOS - perfect but we could watch more as you are very entertaining. BACKGROUND/ HISTORY: we enjoy learning the back story of the trails and also how they got their names. CONTENT: you have the same pattern sequence: intro, ride, summary & end. If that makes sense... TRAIN RIDE WITH YOUR DAD- loved it! As he said, you should do more sooner than later as he is getting old!! LOL AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOU HAVE A FANTASTIC SENSE OF HUMOR (DRY) & AND ARE A VERY ENTERTAINING FELLA! Look forward to a successful 2024 for you and your channel!

I've really enjoyed your presentations of Rail-Trails near Greenville as we are planning to move there in the next few weeks. Over the past few months I have been doing online recon and your vids are a big help. I enjoyed the format and would not be offering suggestions if you hadn't requested input in this video. My input (not criticism) may be quite lengthy and perhaps the comment section isn't suitable, I'll let you decide. A few years ago I had 180+ videos online, several were tours of Rail-Trails. I promoted them through Web forums, even got some published on the Rail-Trail official Websites. Also other outlets. I continued for about 10 years before taking them all down when KZfaq started monetizing them without my consent (I'm sure my blanket consent is in the KZfaq legal agreement somewhere). I'm not tolerating my productions being chopped into pieces with ads. So, sadly, they aren't online at this time. I could upload them again certainly but first have several suggestions, and cautions, that I could pass on in writing and see if you care enough for me to put a few back up. I'll keep an eye out for your response here and we can figure out how best for me to share what I know. I'm not charging you anything. Cheers.

First, welcome to the Greenville area. Lots of folks are moving here. I think you'll like it! Yes, it can be quite jarring when KZfaq inserts ads in the middle of a video (sometimes in weird moments). Even if the ads are only at the beginning, I understand that it can be distasteful to realize that they are profiting from your work. But yeah, I'd be interested in seeing your videos. I watch a wide variety of bike trail videos from other creators and enjoy them all for different reasons. Again, welcome to Upstate South Carolina!

@@joyfultrails I have a couple vids up. How do you want the links sent to you? Not crazy about pirating your KZfaq thread with my video links. Suggestions? Links are Invite Only (Unlisted), so you need a link.

SO you are knocking on 2K after one year...and I am still sitting here at less than 600 after about 5 years of my drivel. LOL! Taking notes! I am getting tons of views, but just not the subs! Consistency is a huge key, no doubt. The Creeper is a very popular trail. and you knocked it out of the park with the video shots and editing. I am not surprised at all that your video took off. 17,000 views is great! Unless someone has done this whole KZfaq thing, they just really have NO clue how much work goes one behind the scenes. I had to take a little step back in December and January, but I am trying to get back into the swing of things. No one sees the hours of prep & research. No one sees the hours of actually filming. No one sees the hours spent pouring over hours of video footage, to crank out a 16 minute video! Keep it up! I am always interested in what other folks are watching...the algorithm doesn't always show me everything that I want to see, so yeah...I would be interested in seeing that video.

Yeah...there is a lot to it that "normies" out there never think about. For example...watched your winter weather video last night and I was struck by the soothing, calming effects of the music. Now, this may not be the case pertaining to that particular video, but we will often spend a lot of time searching for *just* the right song. And what about the times you shoot something and think it's going to be awesome, only to get it back home and find out that it just didn't work for one reason or another. I can certainly understand why the editing process is tedious or a necessary evil for some. But I really enjoy it. Sometimes I get really excited when a video is coming together. Of course, I shoot and edit video as my full-time job, so that also makes a difference. Anyway... Thanks for the kind words on the Creeper video. That was a blast. I want to go back, maybe in Spring.

@@joyfultrails My wife & I are talking about going back with the teardrop. I’ve even talked about duplicating Kentucky Cycling’s video; ride up from Abingdon, to Whitetop. Camp at Creeper Trail Campground (just off the trail, just past Whitetop Trailhead). Then ride back down the following day. I think would be a great bikepacking trip.

Perhaps reaching out to the cycling creators to share on your channel and they could sponsor you on theirs. It might help both channels grow. By the way, there are 2 of us that share this site, a he and she. Do what you enjoy. We will be around.

Good decision, I can only imagine that you get burnt out doing your wonderful videos. Yours is the best editing an content I have seen. I know it is time consuming and expensive. Thanks for as many as you feel like sharing. I will be here. A little bit about me, I love viewing biking an Hiking videos an upstate and the mountains. BTW, I am from Pelzer close to Greenville. I now live between Savannah,Ga an Beaufort, SC. I m I videos here in the 60,s, yes, I am an oldie. Lol I don't get to ride as much as I like an can't hike much. You can't make any money as far as monetization from KZfaq. Not until you have near a million subs or more. I'm about 4 years into this (making trail riding videos) and I have 40,000 subs and the ad revenue each month is not enough to fill my gas tank twice a month. If you want to make money you need sponsors and you need to promote products and offers. And before anyone will sponsor you, well you need a lot of subscribers. So it's a double edge sword. You called it though, You just have to love to ride trails, you have to love to shoot and edit, and the revenue you make is just a side bonus...

I was a Virginia Creeper watcher and then subscriber. Like your played back style and your music selections. Filming is a task for sure ! My wife was watching one of your videos with me once and said, " how did he get that shot , does he have someone riding with him ? ". No honey, he has to get off his bike, set the camera up, ride by the camera, go back and check the shot and pick up the camera....... Good job on year one. I will continue watching ; bi-weekly !

I’m guessing it’s time for you to get out there and find a good relationship with a woman as well. So yes balance this with that and work. And be careful, sometimes the second marriage makes the first one look great…. So take your time and look for the things that really matter. Been there done that. 👍🏻
