In this episode I am doing some local exploring around Uis in Namibia. First I visit the famous rock painting called 'White Lady', hidden under a rock in the Brandberg, the tallest mountain of Namibia. After that, I go for a ride with Basil, who owns the Brandberg Rest Camp. We swap bikes and I get to ride his Honda Africa Twin from 1988 with no less than 150.000 kilometers on the odometer!

Your host/guide brought you to an isolated outcropping of rocks to show you a rare and well preserved rock painting. Perhaps in the past 5000 years only a handful of explorers would have found or noted it's existence. What an opportunity and pleasure to allow us to look at this precariously standing rock painting.

🤣🤣🤣 until the day you arrive in a tiny village, in the middle of nowhere, where not a soul speaks English. You ask for directions to the next town. Everyone frowns. Chitter chatter erupts. Suddenly, half the village points in one direction, the other half point in the opposite direction. 🤔 More chatter chatter. More frowns. One bright spark on a bicycle starts riding, indicating enthusiastically to follow him. You do. And, so does all the villagers, laughing loudly running alongside the land rover. Oopsie, you end up ploughing through their freshly planted fields, bouncing over rocks and stones ... suddenly a road appears several meters away ... who was right, who was wrong? They were all right, some pointed to the road around the back of the village that lead to this road, while the others pointed directly to the road on the other side of the fields ... true story! Much laughter was had by all. Africa is full of "roads" leading nowhere, but somewhere in the back of beyond ... and, with the right attitude there's always great big smiles and much laughter to be had by all ... just keep driving, a colourful journey eventually leads to your destination 🌀🌈😎

Dear Noraly, I hope you will read this. People asked you if they can join you on your travels. But in the live-chat you said "no". I just want to say that I totally get that. I totally agree with you. I totally understand ! It would ruin the magic immediately if you had to drag someone with you, discussing destinations, explaining your decissions, arguing about navigation mistakes, holding you back or pushing you around. They might as well put you in jail, right ? I watch your video's and in my mind I ride with you. Thanks for the adventure. You're living the life we dream of. Alone is how I mostly roll. I enjoy riding with others when I am just along for the ride and am not participating in decisions. I would never impose my will on someone who has organized the adventure. When I am alone, I am free to spend 3 hours having a personal tour of a museum, or riding 6 hours straight, or stopping every 45 minutes because I drank that extra mug of coffee. To be totally free, one must travel alone.

Love those Africa Twins, along with the Transalp 600s they've aged so fantastically well. I don't know how they are elsewhere in the world but they're starting to get really expensive over here in the UK as the numbers dwindle and the retro lines age in nicely. Great guy you were riding with too, very knowledgeable about his local area. I bet he'd be good for some campfire storytelling.

Yup. I had to cross almost all of Bulgaria until I found a really good Transalp (tested 12) after watching Freddie's video on them. I did end up buying a 650 instead of a late 80s 600 though. I really love it. It's still a full-size bike that's also good for touring but not anywhere near as heavy or tall as the big boys.

Wow! The Namibian definition of 'track' really needs a good dose of courage and imagination!! Africa Twin! My dream bike. I would be willing to trade in my Tracer 700 and fabulous Dominator for a good one. One day..... Happy Trails Noraly!

Cool a local adventure bike rider showed you around to some interesting sites, places and things you would not have seen otherwise. A good replacement bike for Savannah would be one of the new CRF 300 Ralleys. Still lightweight where it is easier to handle in the sand, rocks and washouts and to pick up if dropped when you are alone but with a bit more power and a little larger fuel tank..

What a cool episode! Your confidence to find the right road and tracks is admirable. Someone else would be freaking out with that lost feeling. And that pipe takes the biscuit! What a guy! Craggy like the dirt. I mentioned in another episode that you should ride an Africa Twin - a newer one though!

I stumbled onto the Common sense show and listend to Hodges talking about ITCHIBOOTS. I fully agree, dear Noralie, you are indeed a WORLD AMBASSADOR. As a South African grandfather I love your escapades even though I am fearful for you at times, such as being totally alone in the vast expanse of the Namib. Be careful, my lady. God bless you.

The paintings are amazing. The thought that was put into finding materials to create the paints and colors long ago exemplifies human curiosity. I'll bet your ride on the Africa Twin was thought provoking. The bigger bikes do have more power and improved suspensions but they are also cumbersome and heavy in awkward situations. Sometimes less is more. A 250cc or 300cc machine will conquer many challenges.

I didn't know that Africa Twins arrived in 1988.. nor that Noraly arrived in 1987. Clearly, both are doing well given their respective ages. If Columbus and Magellan had had KZfaq in their time, they could never make a more interesting compilation of travel, exploration and adventure than Ms. Schoenmaker.
