This is just what I did, You should always consult a qualified electrician before any work is done.
I misspoke Neutral and ground are not the same thing. The ground and neutral wires are connected at the main panel ONLY. NEC 2008 states that the neutral and ground wires should be “bonded” together at the main panel (only) to the grounding rod.
Old house has a 3 prong dryer cord outlet but my dryer has a 4 prong cord. So I had to change it. I kept the cord, when I rewire the house and my 220 outlets I will put a 4 prong socket on their.
This is just what I did yours may be different.

Those of you who are saying this is a bad video were not listening. You are asking about colors of wires when he clearly and specifically points out with the new cord that the middle wire (neutral) is the only one that needs to be where it is which is in the middle. The other two wires represents "hot". So If you switched the outer two it wouldn't make a difference. They both are hot!!!!! That's it, that's all!!! No need to match colored wires honey!!!

Yep..I ran into similar comments on other videos explaining this and how to do...I acually got confused a little unsure who to believe cus im definitely not any electrician and am scared of any electrical work in my home, home built in 1953...lots of outdated electrical. So with this I acually opted to go ahead an take the easy way out and bought an adapter that has one little extra ground wire that is separated...pretty simple solution, I know I wish I had the confidence to just do this this way, but 12$ later I've got dry clothes and no dryer blows or fires, lol

As someone with zero electrical experience , this video was simple and straight through. The green wire was just reconnected to the same place after the other green plug was removed. The most important piece of information is that the middle wire MUST BE hooked up to the middle plug. The other two that on each side of the middle wire are interchangeable. Doesn’t matter which side you put them on, but it would be simpler for you to just leave them in the order that they already are.

I'm not sure how much it matters, but in my owner's manual, it says when you connect the wire's green wire (4 conductor) to the ground screw on the chassis, that you MOVE that other green (it was white in my manual) to under the center terminal where the common wire will also connect. So black and red would be the same, and the common and the one connected to the dryer chassis would go on the center, and the green from the wire goes to the chassis screw. But when you change it back, basically you're just reversing the mistake, and it corrects itself.

Actually you don't have a chassis ground with a three prong plug. The industry added a ground plug to keep people from getting shocked if one of the phases happened to short to the chassis. On a three prong plug you have to run a separate ground from the green wire on the back of the dryer to a ground bar in the breaker box or to a ground wire in the dryer receptacle.

Now the middle white don't have no screw and that middle one is left empty. The black and red gold connectors are connected but the 3rd one is hooked up to the screw kinda outside the dryer panel.its screwed it with a green wire going inside dryer somewhere. I don't know if I trust just hooking my 4th green wire to that? All these videos are different in way. Alot of them have that middle white connector connected and I seen videos with another white wire connected inside with the white middle connector but I don't see that. mines looks different. Need a bonding jumper at terminals. Your technique is not "bonded". You are probably reading grounding conductivity through electronic circuitry. Plus a lot of dryer motors are 120v so you would have unbalanced neutral load. Also terminals are not "loose". Most dryer terminals are like that. The wire connections is only concern.

Wrong! Need to ground the chasis! Although not to code, either move the green ground wire to the center neutral tap. Better yet, ground the chasis to the main panel ground bar, or the adjacent duplex providing 120 to the washer! Yes, the proper solution would be to upgrade the 3 prong dryer outlet to a 4 prong one with true yet separate conductors for the neutral and ground to the main.

I am in a mobile home and I changed the dryer from a 4 prong to a 3 prong, but the 3 prong does not have a green wire. But the dryer has a green screw. You are not understanding the process at all! You have 2 120 volt hot wires coming to the dryer sharing a neutral and a ground (if equipped). In the early part of the video these 2 120 hots were red and black. So to get 120 volts for the motor is as simple as only pulling from one hot wire.

Strange according to him he has 2 phases (phase 1and phase 2) he used this terminology at least 2x. But residential housing is single phase! Good trick! Use the terminology of hot 1 and hot 2! While he wired it in acceptable manner, his terminology is misleading at best and confusing for someone that does not know what is going on with electrical. Also it is not uncommon to find equipment without a grounding terminal. If possible however always go with a 4 wire system, it adds that grounding safety factor!
