In this video I go over how to change out a dryer plug from a four prong plug to a three prong plug.
This can be done with very few tools and usually takes about 10 min start to finish.
Typical tools you need for this job are a flat head and Phillips screwdriver.
Disclaimer: I am not a licensed electrician or plumber so I am just sharing what I know and can’t be held responsible for any issues you may have with your particular dryer or set up. I have changed out quite a few of these plugs myself including my personal dryer and have not had an issues.
Thanks again for watching!

I have a question.my dryer is a 3 prong plug and my landlord bought a 4 prong plug to attach my 3 prong wires to the 4 prong plug. On my dryer is a green already connected but is it safe for him to attach the 3 wires to the 4 prong plug. Im not sure if im understood but im spooked because i dont want a fire. He actually spliced the wires and attached to the 4 prong plug. I wish i could post a picture. The top prong is green. But my cord has not color. Im kind of freaking is this safe

Some electricians told me not to do it, one told me it's perfectly okay. Who do i believe? The idea on no ground wire. I've been told it's not recommended. Love to have your thoughts.

Hi I’m connecting a 4 prong to my dryer. When I opened it up there is a white cord and another green/yellow cord. How do I connect it? Thanks my dryer is a kenmore. I followed the directions that is posted on the dryer. But I forgot which wire whether it’s the white or yellow/green connected to the ground.

Should have been the discussion about the color of wires what they mean what they're function is positive negative whatever. Also why not use an adapter.
@Robert-yp9zs

Not installing the wire strain bracket is not a good idea! Now, there is nothing protecting the connections from getting pulled on, and potentially coming loose. The lip of the strain bracket is supposed to go on the inner side of the wire hole, so it takes the strain when the wire is pulled, not the terminal connections.
@niner4life.155
@niner4life.155 Жыл бұрын
I would tend to agree but at the same time the location of the power cord is a no traffic zone so the chances of that cord getting pulled on is slim to nill

I don't know what would be pulling on the cord behind my dryer, but is there any reason you couldn't just duct tape the cord to the external backside of the dryer?
@niner4life.155
@niner4life.155 Жыл бұрын
@@N8Dulcimer you could if you think there is going to be any chance if traffic behind the dryer
@N8Dulcimer
@N8Dulcimer Жыл бұрын
@@niner4life.155 no but I could imagine accidentally dropping something behind it that might bump the cord. Still seems like I could just tape the cord into place rather than buying the little fastener that mine didnt come with if I was concerned.

What about a 3 prong plug with the regular plugs 3 prong plugs that’s now installed in the newer homes like front load?
@CM-yw3eg
@CM-yw3eg 22 күн бұрын
Sounds like you're talking about a front load washer? If that's the case, it is a 120V not 240V (which is what an electric dryer is.) In your case with a normal three prong plug, the thinner blade is the hot wire, wider 'spatula' blade is neutral, and third cylinder blade is ground. Your home may have the older outlets with no space for the ground blade. You could either go to trouble and expense of adding a ground wire from panel to outlet or simply use a 3 prong to 2 prong 120V adapter. It's not ideal but perfectly fine.

But the green doesn’t reach . Can we move the green screw closer ? Or should I get a whirlpool cord that has circle hooks???

I hope someone knowledgeable sees this and can help me... I bought an old dryer that originally had a 3 prong cord, the previous owners changed the cord to a 4 prong. I have a 3 prong outlet so I am changing it back to a 3 prong. Apparently they lost the ground tab used for the original 3 prong. What can I use to replace that little metal tab?? Any advice will help. Thank you

You don’t need that piece as your not using a 4 prong plug anymore. That was for the ground. Older wire houses were not on a closed Ground Loop

This video is so helpful! If the ground wire bracket (brass piece) is not connected/ used, will it cause the dryer not to work?
@haroldkahl4610
@haroldkahl4610 10 ай бұрын
The dryer would still work without the ground strap connected but this will create a safety hazard. If there is a fault from a hot wire to the chassis of the dryer, the ground strap, if installed, would cause the breaker to trip. Without it you could get shocked.

I need to know for this brand. I have a four prong. Red on red, white on yellow, black on black, green on green. Is that how it goes?
@CM-yw3eg
@CM-yw3eg 22 күн бұрын
Yes, black and red wires are hot or load wires, each carrying 120V out of phase with each other to create the required 240V for dryer. The white (or yellow) is neutral wire taking voltage back to panel to complete circuit. And green is ground as a safety. So yes, black to black, red to red, white to white (or yellow), and green to green.

Absolutely .... UL Listed components are tested and approved as packaged. Especially needed if you are switching to 3 prong since a short to the dryer housing could lead to a shock of the user.

Only provlem is not putting the bracket for strain releif is a code violation in most states. Don't post things and bot do it to code. Your video is dangerous and if your home burns up or the person who trusted you knew what you are doing, home burns, your negligence could cause fire claim to be denied. This also puts you liable for a potential lawsuit. Go buy another clamp or don't do the job

You mean replace the outlet for a four prong outlet (14-50R maybe) but then change the breaker in the main panel to a 20 amps breaker to protect the washer and still properly grounded and safe. I am not an electrician but I am a huge fan of "grounding things". I believe this setup that I just talked about is not going to be a problem with the "code".
