So a young guy at a shop I use to work at showed me an easy way to install the clutch. Just install it on the input shaft and mate the transmission. Bolt the clutch through the inspection cover afterwards. All you do is pry on the clutch a bit and the bolts will start. Been doing it like that ever since.

The hidden bolt is common for all hydraulic clutch transmission. And if there are other clutch problems, the fork bushings are known to fail.

Guys, put a digital protractor on the top of the trans and get the angle when you start. Helpful if you have to tip the angle of the jack at all or if you have the trans off the jack. Nice job.

Good job, although in reality it took a lot longer than 10 minutes. On those clutches, I used to tightly stretch several bungee cords from up above down to the clutch assembly. That makes the 150 lb clutch weigh almost nothing, that makes it a lot easier when you're doing your clutch job. Also if you'll measure the top and bottom and each side between engine flywheel housing and Trans.bell housing, to get it perfectly in alignment, then it's real easy to stab the tranny to the engine.
@ronunderwood57714 жыл бұрын
If you have time put the pilot bearing in the freezer for a while. Will drop in. ALWAYS check the fit of the bearing on the input shaft. BTW I did not know about the clutch bolt. Don't see many Freightliners. Hope I remember if I do. Thanks

Last several I done we pulled and installed them in the bell housing. That way you don't have to deal with lifting the clutch up by hand. Out clutch jack was broken.

We talked about that, but the way this transmission was setup we couldn't do it.
@shortchange264 жыл бұрын
I hear you. The only way to do it. And yes you guys could have done it that way.
@vicpetrishak10772 жыл бұрын
To make job easier, back truck up onto truck ramps on steering axle , lift rear of frame with OTC air jacks. You will be able to roll under steering axle and fuel tanks . The ramp portion facing front of truck leaves room behind steering tires . Never trust a garbage freight jack! Investing in tools will be beneficial and time saving . Safety is # 1. Strap transmission to jack with 1/4 chain and binder or 2 inch ratchet strap. With a friction jack against a crossmember it will easily push transmission forward ,keeping in mind input shaft turns freely to align splines.

Easiest road tractor clutch to replace was a Volvo vn670 with a 9 speed Eaton and Cummins ISX. Absolute worst was a KW T-660 with same transmission and engine. That aftertreatment system was so in the way that you had to remove it to gain access to the transmission cooler lines or to get to the transmission itself. Cascadia kind of right in the middle.

@trobb484 жыл бұрын
Maybe y’all just didn’t show it but might consider fabbing or buying a rear main seal installer. Unlike the 60 series, 3406, and isx, the dd series engines use a flywheel that rides inside the seal making it a 1 time use seal. At almost 800k miles, that rear main seal is worn out. Other than that suggestion, Good job! That hidden bolt gets folks all the time no matter how many times they read the word “bolt” on the bellhousing... me being one of them lol
@GuyinWY4 жыл бұрын
We considered doing a rear main, but it isn’t currently leaking and this truck is scheduled to be replaced in about a year so we let it ride.
@paulcat99 ай бұрын
I agree with you... pretty much any engine should have the rear main seal replaced while the transmission and clutch are out! They made a huge mistake overlooking that seal.. 😢

Click bait.... sorta, I changed one before or about one to two a week in a truck shop down in thorne bay alaska and its a bit longer than that if its only say a five speed fuller..... I have lost finger nails and thumb nails and pinched my belly so bad that it looked like a hole was starting in my gut.... don't miss doing them especially the ones where everything is fried harder than the mother in laws eggs. I liked working on trucks but there are a few that I remember that were not fun... like a off highway Hayes with the extra heavy suspension and all other related stuff. Makes other rigs look like tonka toys..... so ten minutes got my attention after doing them by myself a dozenteen times/LOL
