Every few years an aircraft with bungee type shock cords on its landing gear will require that they be replaced. As part of my 2020 Annual I had to do mine and so I thought I'd record some of the more interesting parts and describe how its done. Hopefully somebody new to a Pitts or similar bungee equipped aircraft will find this useful.

I'm working on a S2C and getting ready to change the bungees but I can't locate a tool. Do you have an idea of where to source one?

Hi Peter. Currently not by choice working on Sarduster too. I was given the tool to install bungee cord but, have no documents or idea how to use the tool. Previous mechanic installed one bungee and passed a way and I am taking over. Excellent Video but doesn’t show the other end of the tool mounted against what. Please looking forward for advice. I am an A/P IA 25 years experience. This is my first experimental aircraft to work on.

Hi Tayseer- the bungee tool 'hangs' over the bungee peg. Without a picture its a bit hard to explain but let me try. So the bungee tool as two parts. There is a fixed body and then the sliding 'lifting' part which the threads move up and down. The fixed body at the top is curved and on the side facing away from the sliding part there is a notch near the very top. That notch slips over the little hook at the end of the bungee peg. In the process of starting to change the bungees on a Pitts S-2B. I can't find anything on how to jack the aircraft. Any help would be appreciated.

James a normal scissors jack with some rubber padding to protect the gear leg works. I use a scissors jack to lift an inch so I can insert an axle stand. Alternatively you can lift by the upper right or left engine mount cluster after removing the cowl. Just dont lift by engine hoist point.

Hi Peter, I'm currently replacing my bungees of my Pitts S1-S - sadly, it seems the bungees aren't the right ones. I tried two different types, the 1380HD and 1380 normal, but in both cases the gear spreads after a few meters of taxiing. If the shock cords used are the right ones, do you have any Idea what else could be the problem? For us, it just looks like the bungees aren't strong enough to hold the gear tight. Thanks for your answer!

Hi Martin- if those are the correct bungees the only other issue I can think of would be toe-out. In other words the wheels are not parallel and are walking away from each other as you move forward. Do the gear close if you push the plane backwards? Does the gear separate when you rock the wing tip.? Id also suggest you ask your question at biplaneforum.. those guys know the S1S very well.

I’m about to change bungees on an s1t. Did you have any trouble fitting your tool between the frame tubes on the fwd side? I havnt cut the old ones yet but it looks like a an extremely tight fit with my bungee tool

I used the aircraft spruce tool. You can see how it fits before removing the old ones but yes its tight.
