one of the most informative and useful tutorials I've seen on utube for an intermediate player...Thanks

Whats fascinating is how you can hear where your sweet singing spot is in the different examples. I never considered singers would do this for health reasons etc. Amazing :-)

What an excellent explanation of key changes. As a non musician I wanted to understand the concept and this video totally cleared up my confusion. Thanks for posting, maybe we'll see you playin live sometime.

I don't enjoy most country, nor do I play guitar. Still subscribed based on how informative and easy to understand this was. Thank you!

Technically, one doesn't change the 'key' of a song, correct ? A key denotes how many full and half tones between notes in the major, minor or any other scale or in a piece of music as you go up and down the scale. Its actually the REGISTER that you change, not the key. Not a big deal, everybody says it that way and we know what they mean when they say it, but I just thought it was an interesting point since it is so common, thought you might also. Great site, I enjoy it very much.Cheers !

If you're playing in open G and it's a bit too high for your voice, is there anything wrong with using capo, eg around 4th fret, and singing an octave lower?

Makes sense. I know how to change the key, but was curious about the singing part. It has to do with comfort level. I'm a guitar player who wants to sing, not a singer who wants to play guitar so they can sing along. Songs need the lyrics! So I need to Practice, practice, practice the singing part! Thanks.

I started a band and i told them i wanted to play a whole step down to match my range better and half of them complained their instruments weren't ready for that. So should I hire musicians that have instruments that are for me? Or should i cater to their instruments? I vote for the former and not the latter, but I feel like they have a sort of personal standard or stigma that they feel is used in a popular notion. I just don't really know how to address it professionally other than state a simple fact.

I have had the same problem many times. Most musicians are not very good players they can only play songs that they have practiced and most don't understand why one should play a song in a different key. The different keys are mainly for the singer. One could play all music songs in just the key of C one only has to play in deferent keys to fit the singer voice range. Get bands to play in your singing key don't try to sing in the key they pick the singer decides what key a song should be played in.

I've found that singing in Eb is a crutch.. singing in Standard 440 is extremely difficult after singing in Eb tuning for so long.

What about if you are trying to match the keys with a vocal of a singer whom you playing the guitar to support his/her voice?

Tried to play and sing “change” by Deftones and I tuned down 2 whole tones from drop C to Drop G# now it works I need a seven string acoustic😂😂
@kyletaylor38607 жыл бұрын
Would it work the same if you were to change the tuning?
@jeliejoyjimenez93593 жыл бұрын
If you have the Drop pedal. It will be a very big advantage. You will just play the normal chords but you will adjust how many keys you're going to drop.

I'm 25 years old male. And my vocal range is A3-F#4 so how do I find the suitable key which is perfect with my voice?
@joelstandeven7 жыл бұрын
Perhaps a dumb question. But can you just tune your guitar down a 1/2 step or full step and use the same chords therefore lowering the vocal range? I have a feeling the answer is no. But wanted to ask. Great lesson!
@ArnaudFTW6 жыл бұрын
yes you absolutely can. A lot of singer-songwriters play with a guitar tuned half or a whole step down. Check out Nirvana's acoustic live album or most of Eliot Smith for example. However it might be counterintuitive but playing lower on the neck doesn't always mean you want to sing lower too.
@gregmccarter53865 жыл бұрын
Lots,of people including me,,use drop D..
@DanTrapp4 жыл бұрын
Even though this is old and you got your answer already, I've been playing 1/2 step down for 24 years now. I instantly gravitated towards it, and sometimes even go a full step. What this allows, aside from varying ranges (depending on how you feel that day), you can also easily add a capo and be in Standard or higher any time you want. You simply can't ever go lower than the open tuning at the nut so why not start lower and capo up where needed? My thought anyway.
@afbonil2 жыл бұрын
It is totally possible. I would only consider if the lower tension in the strings have a side effect on the neck relief/string height/etc. I would think the safer way to go is get a guitar tech adjust your guitar to play 1/2 step back, and adjust all the parts accordingly.

I understand how to move a step down or up on keys but how do you apply that to the melody?

Why complicate it with numbers?...If your dropping one key..It's a to g ....g to f...d to c..Etc...
@timspense4 жыл бұрын
Why - I have been playing out for a bit - just lower the guitar to D. Most folks including Neil Young and Paul Simon do that. Then you can use your familiar open chords to play your leads, suspensions etc.. that is the easiest way compared to playing bar chords.
