Changing Rear Wheel Bearings | Subaru | Man About Home
There's a loud noise coming from the back end of my 2009 Subaru Outback. It's time to check it out.
I already have new backer plates to install on the rear brakes. So I'll install those now too.
This job turned into new backer plates, new parking brakes, new rear wheel bearing hubs, new rear drive axles, and some new brake lines.

Very well done. The only instructional I have found indicating a new backing plate is needed because the old rusted one is mangled after pounding on it to remove the hub

Thank you. The backing plates were totally rusted out and were actually falling apart before I did this job. I broke one during a previous brake job. So I planned to replace them the next time I had to work in that area. Thank you for watching and commenting!

I'm a little surprised to see that the brake caliper mount is bolted to the backing plate, not the knuckle. I guess that's why Subaru have such beefy backing plates. So methods that use a forcing screw are pushing the backing plate into the knuckle while trying to pull the bearing out.
